A gentle breeze brushed against them, and in the shifting light, a boy around thirteen or fourteen stood with his back to the light. His long eyelashes cast a shadow on his slightly pale face, and his slender body was draped in a blue robe that seemed out of place against the barren land.
"Who are you?" Liu Qingxi asked, seeing such a beautiful boy for the first time. A hint of sadness unexpectedly flickered in her bright eyes.
The boy did not answer but stared directly at the baskets on the backs of the siblings. "Are you working on this?"
"Yes, what's wrong? We're not like you, a Young Master!" Liu Qingxi replied, feeling inexplicably annoyed. Was digging up rotten soil really that distasteful?
However, from the boy's attire and demeanor, it was clear that he came from a well-off family.
Yang Yichen did not expect to be misunderstood by the two and quickly explained, "No... no, I didn't mean it that way. I'm just curious since I've never seen this before. Do you want me to help you?"
He rolled up his sleeves, ready to lend a hand.
"No need, no need! You'll get your clothes dirty!" Liu Qingxi hurriedly refused. It was a joke; the boy's clothes were clearly not something an ordinary farmer could afford to ruin.
"It's fine; it won't get dirty!" Yang Yichen said. He was very curious since it was the first time he had seen someone do this. Plus, having lived alone in the countryside with few friends made him eager for interaction.
The nearby villagers either dared not approach his yard or came with sycophantic flattery. Finally encountering someone who could talk without awkwardness made him reluctant to give up easily. However, having never done such work before, he clearly ended up being more of a hindrance than a help. Liu Qingxi had just managed to fill half a basket when he accidentally knocked it over.
Even with her good temper, she could no longer tolerate it. "Could you please stop being a nuisance?"
"Ah, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to," Yang Yichen apologized awkwardly.
He genuinely just wanted to help and had no intention of causing trouble.
"Forget it; just take a break. We can handle it ourselves!" Liu Qingxi said in exasperation as she pushed Yang Yichen aside dismissively.
"Little sister, what are you digging for?" Yang Yichen awkwardly stood to the side and after a while, he changed the subject.
"I'm not your sister!" Liu Qingxi replied somewhat impatiently. Not only was she over twenty in her past life, but in this era, her body was also thirteen, while the boy in front of her looked to be around thirteen or fourteen.
"Since I'm older than you, I should be the older brother!" Yang Yichen said, looking at the little girl who seemed to be only about ten.
"Who says you're older? I'm thirteen this year; how old are you?" Liu Qingxi retorted.
"I'm also thirteen!" Yang Yichen couldn't answer; it turned out they were the same age. However, the little girl in front of him did look quite small. "Alright, let me know your name. What is it?"
He didn't put on any airs, and his gentle voice quickly made Liu Qingyan, the Little Guy, lower her guard. Before Liu Qingxi could respond, she spoke up first: "Big brother, my name is Liu Qingyan, and my sister's name is Liu Qingxi!"
Well then, Liu Qingxi had no choice but to speak since her younger brother was too innocent and easily revealed their names to others.
"What’s your name? What are you doing here?"
"My name is Yang Yichen..." Yang Yichen introduced himself briefly.
"Then Qingxi, you still haven't told me what you all are doing here?"
"We're fertilizing the fields; this dark soil can help crops grow better!" From the boy's words, Liu Qingxi learned about his background.
It turned out he was a young master from the town who had come here to recuperate. However, he didn't act pretentious at all, which made Liu Qingxi lower her guard and answer him earnestly.
"I see. Don't people usually use manure for fertilizing?"
Liu Qingxi remained silent and didn't want to engage with this unworldly Young Master anymore.
Yang Yichen soon realized he had asked too much and stopped talking, quietly watching the siblings.
Whenever there was a need, he would timely hand over the tools, quickly endearing himself to Little Guy Liu Qingyan, who kept calling him "brother."
Liu Qingxi filled a backpack and put away the tools, saying to Yang Yichen, "Young Master Yang, we are leaving now!"
"If you need anything, feel free to ask me for help. Just call me by my name; no need to call me 'young master'!" Yang Yichen immediately stood up and said to Liu Qingxi.
"Got it, you should head back too!"
"Okay, so are we friends now?" Yang Yichen asked.
"Yes, we're leaving now!" After saying that, Liu Qingxi struggled to carry the backpack and walked home.
Yang Yichen was left standing alone, but he was very happy because this was his first friend in Ten Li Pu, a very cute little girl.
Until he could no longer see the siblings' figures, Yang Yichen turned around and left with a sense of loss.
Back at the Yang Family courtyard, Yang Yichen shook his head and smiled: "Maybe I've been lonely for too long!" That’s why he felt an inexplicable fondness for Liu Qingxi.
Perhaps it was also because the siblings sold something quite unique that resonated with him.
However, when he sat down to read, he couldn't focus on the words at all. Sighing, he looked out the window; bright sunlight streamed in. Finally, he helplessly put down the book and called out, "Anan, come in!"
"Young master, what can I do for you?"
"Go find out where that brother and sister live," Yang Yichen said. He felt that Liu Qingxi possessed a kind of tenacity that was different from ordinary farmer girls.
"Yes, I'll go right away!" For Anan, investigating Liu Qingxi's background was an easy task.
Before long, Anan returned: "Young master, the Liu Family fled here two months ago. They need to fertilize their fields these days, but they have nothing at home. They've just gone up into the mountains to dig some fertile soil to bring back."
"Really? Then we have plenty in our yard, right? Let's send some to them later!"
After saying this, she ignored Anan's stunned expression and picked up her book to continue studying, clearly much calmer than before.
When they went to the forest again in the afternoon, Liu Qingxi was stopped by a young boy who looked like a servant; this was Anan, who was beside Yang Yichen.
" Miss Liu, we have a lot of manure at our place. Young Master said to give it to you!"
"We don't need that!" Liu Qingxi felt that they weren't familiar enough to accept something from others.
It's important to know that manure is very valuable to ordinary farmers as it can increase crop yields.
"Oh come on, Miss Liu, it’s of no use to us. It’s better to give it to you!" Anan seemed a bit anxious.
He actually liked the little girl's ungreedy nature: "If we don’t give it to you, we’ll have to clean it up ourselves. Consider it a favor!"
"Alright then, thank you!" Liu Qingxi didn't refuse any longer.
When they arrived at the Yang Family, Yang Yichen happened to come out of the study. "Thank you, Young Master Yang!"
"Thank you for what? Didn't we agree that we're friends?"
Sorry for the delay; I've been really busy these past couple of days. I promise to update around noon at 12 PM from now on!
