It was a rare occasion for Liu Laosi to visit the new house. This time, he came to discuss the upcoming grain harvest with Yan. He excitedly pushed open the door and exclaimed, "Father, the wheat will be ready in a few days..."
Before he could finish, he was abruptly interrupted. "What are you shouting about? You're making a racket! Who invited you here?"
Wang rushed in with her hair in disarray, looking like a bird's nest, and confronted Liu Laosi. "Don't you see me, your Sister-in-law? Do you even understand basic manners?"
Wang had learned how to assert herself at Wan Mansion, even if she hadn't picked up much else.
Liu Laosi felt extremely awkward under her barrage of words, his face turning red and pale. "Sister-in-law, I'm here to discuss the harvest with Father."
Liu Laosi was genuinely no match for Wang's aggressive demeanor and tried to explain himself honestly.
However, Wang didn't give him a chance to explain. Known for her unreasonable behavior, she waved her hand dismissively. "Forget it! I never see you helping with the farming. Now that it's time to harvest, you're here? You only come around when there's food to be had; you're just trying to take advantage!"
Liu Laosi was left speechless by her words, his face flushed as he rubbed his hands together and stammered, "Sister-in-law, I really didn't mean it that way. I was just worried that Father might be too busy..."
"Cut it out! What busy work? You have a capable niece; why not use those many Ox Carts? That wretched girl dared to hit me, your Aunt! That Dead Girl deserves a beating."
Wang hated Liu Qingxi fiercely but suddenly shrank back at the thought of the villagers swarming in.
Liu Laosi often saw this kind of resentful expression on Wang's face, especially towards his niece Liu Qingxi. He wanted to say a few good words for her: "Sister-in-law, Qingxi isn't that kind of person; how could she possibly lay hands on you?"
"Oh, so you're all in cahoots! What's wrong with you, Liu Laosi? Are you just bored? Can't you see all these injuries on me are from that wretched girl?"
Wang blamed all her grievances on Liu Qingxi.
"That can't be," Liu Laosi said, dumbfounded. Wang's appearance was indeed quite disheveled.
"What do you mean it can't be? You have a good relationship with her, so why don't you go over together? Why come here? Don't just think about taking advantage; you haven't worked the fields, so don't expect to get any grain."
Wang's eyes darted around. Although the harvest from the fields was small, it was still a harvest, and selling it would bring in some money. She couldn't let Liu Laosi and Liu Laowu have it.
Determined, she thought of her daughter and felt reassured that she wouldn't lose favor. But then she wondered what Liu Laosi was doing here.
Wang's eyes filled with suspicion. Could it be that Liu Laosi had come back to take advantage of her?
Otherwise, why would these two brothers come to the new house when she returned?
The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became. Suddenly, Wang felt an urgent desire to drive these useless brothers out of her home.
Looking at the mud on their clothes, their messy hair, and their wrinkled faces made her feel irritated. She thought about how she was soon going to town to be a wealthy lady and couldn't take these people with her.
Resolute, Wang took a step back. "Come in; I have something to discuss."
Liu Laosi looked at her suspiciously, his heart racing. Wang's mood changed too quickly; one moment it was cloudy, and the next it was sunny.
But facing the calm Wang, Liu Laosi suddenly felt uncertain. This sister-in-law kept surprising him.
However, Wang overlooked her own disheveled appearance, which was not much better than Liu Laosi's after working in the fields.
The two of them walked one after the other to Yan and the Two Elders' room. It was a modest bedroom. Usually, if they didn't go out to work in the fields, the two elders rarely left home; they only occasionally chatted with peers of the same age.
However, the Liu Family is still considered outsiders, and there aren't many people that Yan can rely on.
When Liu Laosi followed Wang to his parents' room, he saw Yan half-squatting on a stool, holding a pipe and exhaling smoke.
Seeing the newcomers through the hazy smoke, Yan squinted his eyes and spoke in a hoarse voice, "Eldest Uncle's Wife, Fourth Brother, what brings you here?"
Liu Laosi was about to speak when Wang interrupted him, "Dad, well, you see the kids have grown up. It’s not good to keep mixing things up like this. How about we split the family?"
Wang said this with a hearty laugh, and with her bruised face, it looked quite comical.
However, these words made Yan's heart skip a beat and tighten painfully. He choked on the smoke he had inhaled and erupted into a series of harsh coughs.
"Cough, cough, cough," Yan gasped for air. "Eldest Uncle's Wife, what do you mean?"
The last time Liu Laosi and Liu Laowu brought this up, he was so furious that he nearly passed out. This time, Wang raised the issue again, and the pain he felt was no less than before.
But hearing this term for the second time was clearly easier for him to accept than the first.
Liu Laosi quickly stepped forward and gently patted his back. "Dad, take it easy."
Last time, Yan couldn't handle it, and the two brothers had no choice but to give up. This time, Wang's words stirred up waves in his heart as well; however, while Yan felt anger and shock, Liu Laosi felt excitement.
Wang remained oblivious to Yan's anger and continued to chatter on. Ultimately, she wanted to prove to Liu Qingxi that Liu Qingzhi had not been abandoned and that her son-in-law Wandehai would lead them to a better life.
Thus, she was eager to distance herself from these brothers—oh no! In Wang's mind, these families were burdens.
"Father, I'm doing this for the children. It's about time Qing Shu becomes a bride. With our big family, it will be difficult later on; we don't have enough space, and there are so many issues to deal with. I think it's better to separate."
"Just think about it. If we separate, we can take care of ourselves and still show you filial piety. Isn't that the same as living together?"
Wang was calculating in her mind, and her words sounded pleasant on the surface.
However, after so many years of marrying into the Liu Family, today was a rare moment of calm for her, and she even spoke to Yan with a hint of flattery.
It was unprecedented and quite eye-opening.
To her surprise, Yan was exceptionally firm: "No! As long as I am alive, we cannot separate."
For him, there was no room for negotiation on this matter.
But who was Wang? It was perfectly normal for her not to regard her in-laws highly. She had started off speaking nicely but suddenly raised her voice sharply, piercing like a needle through the eardrums.
"No! We must separate!"
The arrival of Liu Laosi today made her feel a deep sense of crisis, fearing that these two families would become too entangled. She wished she could divide the household right now.
Yan coughed violently again, and after a long pause, he fixed his gaze tightly on Liu Laosi: "Fourth Brother, you want to separate too, don't you?" His eyes were filled with intensity.
