In the midst of confusion, Bu Xin thought that Earl Warren Edra was being overly enthusiastic. Even though he had once saved his daughter, someone of such high status shouldn't be so courteous. Was there some ulterior motive behind this?
With this thought, Bu Xin became even more puzzled. He was poor and had nothing to offer, aside from the family he occasionally mentioned when lying, which hardly seemed worth remembering.
While he remained vigilant in his heart, Bu Xin smiled warmly and humbly replied, "Earl Warren Edra, you are too kind. I merely helped out when I saw injustice. Sister Wendy and I have become friends, so there's no need for gratitude."
Warren Earl nodded with a smile, clearly pleased with Bu's modesty. He patted Bu's shoulder and said kindly, "Nephew, since you and my daughter get along so well and share a deep friendship, there's no need to keep calling me Earl Warren Edra. Just call me Uncle."
Bu Xin was speechless. This enthusiasm was a bit too obvious. Initially, he was called "Nephew" upon their first meeting, and now he was being asked to recognize him as an uncle.
Reluctantly, Bu Xin forced a smile and said, "That might not be appropriate; after all, I'm the younger one..."
"Oh come on! I think it's great this way; it makes things less awkward. Are you unwilling to acknowledge me as your old uncle?"
Before Bu Xin could finish his sentence, Warren Earl interrupted him. The old man had thick skin; he started with a cheerful demeanor but quickly shifted to an unhappy expression.
Warren Earl had a broad face with prominent features and a hearty laugh that gave off a sense of grandeur. However, his displeased look revealed an air of authority.
What a shameless old man! Bu Xin cursed inwardly. Since things had come to this point, he could only feign surprise and say, "Earl Warren Edra is so generous towards me; if I continue to be coy, it would be ungrateful. I will take the liberty of calling you Uncle."
"Hahaha! Good! Nephew, stay with me tonight. After the banquet, I have some matters to discuss with you."
Warren Earl laughed heartily, appearing extremely pleased. However, his final words revealed his true intentions.
Bu Xin realized that this old fox had no good intentions; the so-called discussion was likely the ultimate goal behind his false friendliness.
Not wanting to ask directly what it was about, Bu Xin merely smiled and nodded as if he hadn't caught on to the underlying meaning.
After exchanging more pleasantries with Warren Earl, Bu Xin took his leave under the pretense of not wanting to disturb his official duties.
Once outside the study, Bu Xin quietly sighed in relief. Dealing with this old fox was truly not an easy task.
The level of conversation from the Old Guy is truly remarkable. What seems like aimless chatter at first glance could easily lead one to unknowingly sell themselves out if they weren't as vigilant as Bu Yi Lu.
Under Wendy's guidance, Bu Yi Lu headed towards the guest residence of the Aldra Family estate.
Meanwhile, in the study, behind a carved dragon screen, Warren Earl sat at a twelve-foot-long desk made of sandalwood. The desk was intricately crafted by artisans, featuring lifelike carvings of birds, beasts, fish, insects, and exotic flowers. Scattered across the surface were various papers and books.
Warren Earl showed no intention of reading or handling official matters. He sat quietly in a leather chair, lost in thought, gently twirling a feather quill in his hand.
After a long while, he suddenly spoke as if addressing the air with a series of inexplicable words.
"Hawk, what do you think of this person named Brent?"
In the silent room, there was no one else but the Earl.
At that moment, the air in the room rippled slightly as a figure cloaked entirely in black appeared abruptly.
This figure exuded an aura that was completely repressed, devoid of any signs of life, resembling a corpse. Enveloped in a vague shadow, their features were impossible to discern—extremely eerie.
The sudden appearance of this figure bent down and spoke in a voice that sounded like metal scraping against metal: "Young, capable, cautious, low-key—quite rare."
The person's response was succinct to the point of being terse.
Upon hearing this mysterious individual's assessment, Warren Earl smiled. He leisurely placed his palm on the desk and rhythmically tapped his index finger on the surface while lowering his eyelids as if reminiscing about his brief encounter with Bu.
"Young, capable, cautious, low-key—quite rare." Warren Earl compared these admirable qualities in his mind and ultimately found them identical to those displayed by Bu.
He turned to look at the still-bowed mysterious figure and smiled slightly, seemingly satisfied as he nodded and said, "Hawk, receiving such valuable praise from someone as reticent as you confirms that this Brent is indeed a rare talent."
The figure known as Hawk simply remained silently bowed in place without speaking.
Having seemingly grown accustomed to the other's silence, Warren Earl paid it no mind and chuckled to himself, "If I let this child represent our family in the Qualification Challenge issued by the Holy Light Academy from the Dysia Kingdom, do you think we could achieve a decent result?"
The silent Hawk spoke again, but only uttered a single word: "Difficult."
Warren Earl, hearing this, could only shake his head with a wry smile. He knew all too well the challenges involved, but for the glory of his family, he had to take a chance.
If a representative from his family were to achieve excellent results in this Qualification Challenge that swept across the entire Crook Duchy, it would not only elevate their family's status within the Duchy but could also potentially forge connections with major forces like the Holy Light Academy.
However, his Aldra Family's offspring were truly disappointing; his strongest son, Bill, was currently only at a low-level 1. With such strength, it would be difficult for him to perform well even in the qualification rounds of Sparta City, let alone across the entire Crook Duchy or even the Dysia Kingdom.
Moreover, the Qualification Challenge issued by the Holy Light Academy explicitly stated that participants must be no older than 5 years and possess a strength of at least level 1. Such strict regulations eliminated many who might have considered taking shortcuts.
Recently, some major forces in Crook Duchy had been spreading news and offering generous conditions to recruit young talents under 5 years old with strong abilities.
The Aldra Family had not fallen behind either and had recruited some young talents. However, these individuals were all at low-level 1 strength, comparable to Bill's abilities.
Warren Earl felt troubled; with such strength participating in the Qualification Challenge, achieving good results was impossible.
As the deadline for the Qualification Challenge approached, Warren Earl planned to take desperate measures by purchasing a powerful set of Thorned Heart equipment for his son Bill, hoping that with sufficient wealth, he could support him to go further in the Qualification Challenge. Just as Bill began to feel ambitious about this opportunity, an unexpected event occurred.
When Wendy returned to the family, she went straight to the study with Elder in Yellow. The Elder detailed the assassination attempt they had encountered along the way to Warren Earl.
Initially furious upon hearing that someone had targeted his children in secret—an outright affront—Warren Earl was enraged. However, as he learned more about what had transpired and heard about Bu's sudden appearance—young yet powerful—and most importantly, that he had just broken through to low-level strength, Warren Earl found himself laughing instead of fuming. His joyous demeanor left both Wendy and Elder in Yellow puzzled.
After his amusement subsided, Earl Warren Edra learned through questioning that Bu would be visiting soon. He felt immense joy at this news.
Had it not been for fear of alarming other major forces in Sparta City who might notice Bu as well, Warren Earl would have already sent someone to invite him into their family.
The study was silent.
After Hawk posed a difficult question, Warren Earl remained quiet for a while, furrowing his brow in thought.
Suddenly, he seemed to recall something and looked at the shadowy figure of Hawk, expressing some doubt as he said, "Can you discern this person's background? This individual is quite astute; despite my attempts to probe, I couldn't uncover his family origins. If he were to represent his family in the Qualification Challenge and fails to achieve remarkable results, that would be one thing. However, if he were to secure a top position, I fear..."
At this point, Warren Earl did not elaborate further, but Hawk understood the count's concerns. He calmly replied, "Don't worry, the Servant is only Level 1 and has no one guarding him; it's not a cause for concern."
Nodding slightly, Warren Earl grasped Hawk's meaning.
Typically, offspring of major forces traveling would have powerful Servants accompanying them. Even if the Servant was weak, there would usually be a strong guardian hidden nearby to prevent any accidents involving the family heir.
Previously, the Elder in Yellow who accompanied Wendy was her guardian during her travels and possessed low-level strength.
Given the prominent reputation of the Aldra Family in the Crook Duchy, Warren Earl did not expect anyone would dare to provoke the Tiger Head. Therefore, he had not dispatched a more formidable protector in advance; after all, strong individuals are also a scarce resource, and a low-level warrior was sufficient for the situation.
After analyzing the situation, it was clear that without a powerful Servant or a strong guardian secretly following him, what he referred to as his family was merely a faction. This allowed Warren Earl to relax.
Without the protection of a powerful family force, controlling an individual with the influence of the Aldra Family would be quite easy.
