Looking at Elena's departing figure, Step's expression grew more peculiar as he glanced at Sean Sterling and tentatively said, "Senior... it seems that Elena, Judge, is quite concerned about you?"
As soon as these words left his mouth, Step could hear his own heart pounding violently, feeling sweat forming in his palms.
If this had been before today, Step wouldn't have dared to ask Sean Sterling such a question even if he were threatened. However, after today's events, Step realized that Sean Sterling was actually quite easy to get along with; as long as one was on his good side, there was nothing that couldn't be discussed.
"Thud."
"You little brat... what nonsense are you thinking?" Sean Sterling raised his wand and gave Step a hard knock on the head, sounding somewhat annoyed.
"Ouch!" Step exclaimed, rubbing his head and discovering a large bump forming on top. He looked up at Sean Sterling with a wronged expression in his eyes, clearly saying, "I wasn't thinking anything nonsense; it's clearly you who are overthinking."
Sean Sterling snorted coldly, shot a glance at Step, and then walked towards the castle.
Step hurriedly followed behind him.
With Elena's departure, the crowd gathered in the area began to turn back towards the castle. Before leaving, Gaia looked back at Step from a distance, her gaze filled with provocation and disdain. Beside her stood two competitors, a man and a woman, both wearing contemptuous expressions.
Noticing the unfriendly looks coming from afar, Step followed their gaze and saw the malice in the eyes of the three but merely chuckled lightly and lowered his head to continue following Sean Sterling without paying them any mind.
Not far ahead, Kalandor and Reynold were waiting. Beside them stood Yahan and elite members of his team. Fayrel and Victor were among them; however, with Bivis's death, these two had completely freed themselves from the Mind Chain and regained consciousness.
As Sean Sterling and Step approached, both Fayrel and Victor turned pale, cold sweat beading on their foreheads as they appeared somewhat flustered.
"You two better hurry up and apologize to Lord Sean and await his judgment," Yahan said sternly, his expression serious as he glared at Fayrel and Victor.
The two of them shivered and hurriedly approached Sean Sterling, bowing deeply and expressing their fear, "Lord Sean, forgive us, Young Master Brent, forgive us. We were unfortunately deceived by treacherous individuals and nearly caused a disaster. Thankfully, Young Master Brent and Anran are unharmed. Please punish us for our negligence."
Seeing Fayrel and Victor trembling and repeatedly bowing in front of him, Bu couldn't help but sigh inwardly: "Everything relies on strength; otherwise, one can only be at the mercy of others, with fate not in one's own hands."
"You two may rise... This matter has passed, and I am too lazy to pursue it further. Each of you will receive fifty lashes as punishment, just to remind you," Sean Sterling waved his hand, somewhat impatiently.
Fayrel and Victor breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this, their faces showing gratitude as they respectfully said, "Thank you, Lord Sean, for your forgiveness. Thank you, Young Master Brent, for your forgiveness." They bowed once more and quickly stepped aside to clear the path.
At that moment, Aheng stepped forward confidently and said loudly, "Lord Sean, today's incident also has my negligence. I am willing to accept one hundred lashes as punishment; I hope you will grant it." After finishing his words, Aheng saluted with a fist against his chest.
Bu widened his eyes in surprise at Aheng's words. While he inwardly cursed the man for being foolish, he also felt a sense of admiration and goodwill towards him.
People like Aheng, who are sincere and dedicated to their duties, are indeed rare. If others were to escape punishment for their negligence, they would likely be secretly pleased rather than taking the initiative to accept blame like Aheng.
Upon hearing Aheng's words, a glimmer of appreciation flashed in Sean Sterling's eyes. His gaze towards Aheng softened considerably as he chuckled lightly, "Very well; you are commendable. I grant you one hundred lashes."
"Thank you for your punishment, my lord." Aheng bowed again and then stepped back to stand with Fayrel and Victor.
Sean Sterling shook his head lightly and continued walking forward.
"Let's go; today has been quite eventful. We should go back and rest well," Bu said as he approached Kalandor and Reynold, stretching lazily and giving Kalandor a reassuring glance with a smile.
Kalandor slightly pursed his lips and nodded. Reynold shot Bu a sidelong glance before silently stepping away to follow behind Sean Sterling.
Shrugging his shoulders, Bu smiled at Kalandor, and the two followed suit. The group formed two lines as they made their way toward the castle.
One uneventful night passed, and by noon the next day, Bu was practicing in his room when he was interrupted.
When he opened the door, Bu was surprised to find that it was once again Fayrel and Victor from yesterday. However, both of them had long faces, looking quite aggrieved.
"What is it?" Bu asked curiously.
Fayrel's expression turned sour, appearing as if he wanted to say something but hesitated. Meanwhile, Victor seemed to have made some sort of resolution and forced himself to say, "Young Master Brent… um… Prince Kevin, the son of the Duke from the Aldra Family, has sent an invitation for you to visit his residence."
"Another invitation?" Bu frowned, casting a suspicious glance at Fayrel and Victor, scrutinizing them as if trying to determine whether they had fallen under some mental control again.
Once bitten by a snake, one is afraid of a rope for three years. Bu was now very sensitive to any invitations after the dangers he faced last night. If it weren't for Sean Sterling's intervention, he would have foolishly followed along and met certain death.
Feeling Bu's doubtful gaze and scrutinizing eyes, Fayrel and Victor were nearly in tears. After enduring fifty lashes yesterday, they could barely walk; every step they took felt like fire on their backsides.
Unfortunately, they still had to continue with the unfinished business from yesterday. Given A-Heng's strictness regarding self-interest, it didn't matter whether they were injured or not.
Completing their duties wasn't a problem in itself; it was just part of their responsibilities. But damnably, there was this invitation from the Duke's son of the Aldra Family that had to be delivered directly to Bu.
As a result, Fayrel and Victor found themselves in a difficult position, feeling utterly helpless. After what happened last night, they were now in such a rush to avoid Bu that they couldn't dare approach him again to deliver the invitation.
The previous invitation had lured Bu out of the castle and nearly led him into danger. To invite him again now would be nothing short of blatant provocation; did they think he was a fool?
However, they knew they couldn't ignore this invitation. Fayrel and Victor understood that Bu represented the Aldra Family. The invitation from the Duke's son might involve important matters that needed to be discussed with Bu. If their negligence caused any significant issues to be delayed, they certainly couldn't bear that responsibility.
After much contemplation, Fayrel and Victor finally sighed, wiping away their tears and snot, resignedly arriving at the door of Bu's room.
"This is the invitation sent by Prince Kevin. Please have a look, Young Master Brent." With a face full of sorrow under Bu's scrutinizing gaze, Victor handed over the invitation.
Bu frowned as he took it, glancing at the two in front of him again before waving his hand. "I've received this invitation; you may leave now."
Upon hearing this, Victor and Fayrel felt as if they had been granted a reprieve, nodding vigorously as they bowed and exited.
Back in his room, Bu held the invitation, lost in thought as he contemplated the authenticity of the matter.
Even though Sean Sterling had recently asserted his authority and warned everyone that Bu was under his protection, there could still be a few reckless individuals willing to cause trouble for Bu. He couldn't risk his life on such a gamble; even if the likelihood was extremely low, it couldn't be entirely ruled out.
Turning his attention to the invitation in his hand, Bu opened it and began to read.
"Dear Brother Brent,
As you have just arrived in the capital, I regret that I could not welcome you personally. I hope you will not hold it against me for any shortcomings in my hospitality. Although we have never met face to face, I feel a long-standing connection with you. Your bravery is admirable.
I am hosting a banquet at my residence and sincerely invite you to join me. Uncle Hawk will also be present, so please make sure to grace us with your presence.
Sincerely,
Kevin"
After finishing the content of the invitation with half-closed eyes, Bu felt an overwhelming sense of goosebumps all over his body.
What does it mean to be shameless? Bu has now witnessed it firsthand. Indeed, like father, like son; Kevin's pretentious way of getting close to people is just like Warren's.
Calling him "brother" so affectionately and bringing up their long-standing connection, if it comes time to stab a knife, he would surely do so without hesitation, stabbing as many times as necessary.
At this moment, Bu no longer doubts the authenticity of the invitation letter, as the mention of Hawk in the letter is something only those from the Aldra Family would bring up.
"Kevin must have brought up Hawk to prevent me from refusing the invitation, intending to intimidate and remind me," Bu thought for a moment, a glint of coldness gradually appearing in his eyes.
He had to go; although he had Sean Sterling's assistance now, it was still not the right time to turn against the Aldra Family. After all, Hawk was too unpredictable and difficult to guard against. It would be better to wait until he was absolutely certain before making a move.
After carefully considering everything, Bu left the room. He did not rush to set off but instead walked toward Sean Sterling's residence.
Before he could knock on the door, it opened on its own. Bu stepped inside without hesitation.
The room was arranged as before, with sunlight streaming through curtains that resembled fluttering butterflies. A refreshing and calming fragrance wafted from two purple wood incense burners placed on the tables. As a cool breeze filled the room, Bu Shen felt his mind clear and his vision sharpen. He took a few steps forward and directed his gaze toward a figure by the window.
