Upon exiting the Myriad Law Palace, Step was enveloped in shadows, cradling the still unconscious Eve in his arms as he made his way back along the path they had come. Hong Lian followed closely behind, her frost-like expression even colder at this moment.
There was no longer any interest in exploring the Alchemist's Hall or the Artifact Hall. Regardless of whether these two halls were also empty of treasures, Step had just been severely tricked by the Three-Eyed Elder Statue. The so-called one-year deadline felt like a sharp thorn embedded in his heart, leaving him nothing but frustration. The feeling of being threatened at such a critical moment made it hard for him to let go.
The sound of dripping water echoed, creating ripples in the tranquil pool at the entrance of Water Moon Cave. A bright yellow light flickered as two figures burst forth from the cave entrance. The calm waters were instantly disturbed, and dense bubbles rose to the surface with a gurgling sound. With two loud splashes, the figures leaped from the water into the air, landing steadily on two stone pillars.
These two figures were none other than Step and his Avatar, Hong Lian. In Step's arms lay a beautiful woman with fair skin and striking features; even in her current state of slumber, Eve was enough to captivate anyone who beheld her.
"If I can't comprehend Heart Seal within two months, I need to make plans early. Just a one-year deadline—if I'm not fully prepared, that old monster will definitely show no mercy. Damn it," Step's voice echoed gloomily within the spacious cave. He gently placed Eve on the ground and began to channel energy into her meridians.
Hong Lian silently chose a clean patch of ground to sit down. During the process of awakening Eve, he needed to sort through recent events in his mind to prepare for what lay ahead.
As of today, the tacit understanding between Step and his Avatar had grown stronger. Step gradually became accustomed to this state of coexisting consciousness without any confusion or signs of mental fragmentation. If this state continued, there might be a chance for their souls to become one, transcending mere Mental Power connection and achieving true soul unity.
A person has only one soul and one life; however, if one reaches a level of soul unity with an External Avatar, it would mean truly possessing a second Avatar. Even if the original body perished, as long as the second Avatar remained, there would still be hope for resurrection. The most formidable aspect of soul unity is that both the original and Avatar could merge into one, resulting in a significant boost in combat power—a perfect complement and alliance!
Unfortunately, achieving soul unity is extremely difficult. Step had spent some Honor Points in the academy's library just to find information on this topic. The descriptions in those books treated External Avatars as mythical concepts and merely glossed over the state of soul unity without much detail.
Relying solely on his own random explorations, Step had not fully realized the potential of External Avatars. In this period when True Gods were hidden on Fran Continent, it seemed that Hong Lian was the only unique treasure available. Many matters required personal research, some of which could not be uncovered through study alone—like achieving soul unity, which necessitated an exceptionally high level of tacit understanding between the original and Avatar, with a stroke of good fortune providing even a glimmer of hope.
Earlier, when Step sensed danger outside Water Moon Cave near Myriad Law Palace, Hong Lian meditating within immediately felt something amiss and swiftly flew to where Step was located to provide timely support during an unexpected crisis. This was a form of spiritual connection—an understanding between their consciousnesses linked by Mental Power. If this understanding were to deepen further, the initial signs of soul unity would begin to emerge.
Not long after, Eve's long eyelashes fluttered as she slowly awakened from her coma. Her eyes still held a hint of heat; despite being filled with confusion, this bewilderment made her gaze even more captivating—like an innocent girl tasting forbidden fruit for the first time. The sensation seeped into her very being, causing her cheeks to flush as if she were a drunken beauty after indulging in wine—exceedingly alluring.
Upon seeing Eve wake up, Bu shook her head and helped her sit up, channeling energy to dry the moisture from her clothes. The woman's body was delicate and frail, and when her palm touched Eve's back, despite the fabric in between, she felt a wave of comfort. It was unclear whether this comfort came from her heart or simply from the sensation of touch; in any case, Bu did not feel too ashamed and remained gentle.
"Thank you," Eve said, her beautiful face flushed as if it could squeeze out water. The memory of what happened between her and Bu in the Myriad Law Palace made her feel an overwhelming sense of embarrassment, especially recalling Bu's powerful hand that had even reached inside her bodice, touching the Sacred Peaks that had never been touched by anyone else. Yet at this moment, she could not act like her usual self and throw a tantrum; all she could do was blush and softly utter those two words of gratitude.
This thankfulness was not only for being saved by Bu but also because he had not taken advantage of her vulnerability. Moreover, reflecting on her impulsive actions when she first entered the stone hall made her feel even more conflicted.
