The Ancient Stone Tablet has a deep color, covered with large cracks, giving the impression that it would shatter into pieces with just a light touch. It is difficult to discern what kind of stone it is made from; when unfolded, it measures only about thirty centimeters but weighs over a hundred pounds.
At the top of the stone tablet are four characters, all in ancient script. Bu does not recognize these characters, and they do not recognize him either.
"Are you sure these characters represent the Soul-vanishing Fan?" Bu stares wide-eyed, clearly showing on his face that he is not well-read and hopes not to be deceived.
Eve chuckles lightly, unable to contain her amusement. "When did I say these four characters are the Soul-vanishing Fan? These characters are ancient script from the time of Bernard's co-rule. I only recognize two of them; this one means 'Feather,' and this one means 'Magic.'" Eve points to the two characters on the stone tablet with her slender fingers.
Bu's eyes widen in surprise, about to speak, but Eve anticipates his thoughts and adds, "Bernie became famous five years ago, and many powerful individuals coveted his forbidden technique for the Soul-vanishing Fan. To dispel their ulterior motives, he claimed that the technique was passed down from the Feather Magic predecessor and that there were no Skill Books inscribed. Even if he died, it could not be passed on to others.
Later, Bernie joined the Divine Mercenary Corps and received protection from Byron. Although Byron also coveted what he learned from the Soul-vanishing Fan, he never succeeded in obtaining it. Who would have thought that this time it would benefit us?"
Eve continues, unable to suppress her laughter, her pretty face filled with pride. However, Bu's expression suddenly changes as he pulls the confused Eve behind him. The silent Hong Lian steps forward, blocking both of them. Her eyes shine with a chilling coldness as her overwhelming Mental Power sweeps outwards, spreading in all directions.
"Since you haven't left, why hide?"
With a cold snort, Hong Lian suddenly swings her sword. With a whoosh, an Energy Wheel shoots towards the left direction shrouded in mist, crossing over thirty meters in an instant.
Eve's face changes as she realizes what is happening.
At that moment, a loud explosion echoes as a figure darts out from the rolling mist, accompanied by a dark voice.
"I didn't expect your reactions to be so quick that you could lock onto my position so swiftly. But no matter how fast you are, can you outpace my activation of the formation's Speed?"
"Formation?" Bu Xin is startled and exchanges glances with Eve, both surprised by what they see in each other's eyes.
Just as Eve mentioned Byron's intense desire for Bernie's Soul-vanishing Fan, a warning signal suddenly arose in Bu's mind, prompting Hong Lian to expand his Mental Power to investigate the surroundings. This was based on the idea that he had no major concerns, and in fact, Bu did not pay too much attention.
After all, if Byron were hiding nearby, it would naturally indicate an intention to ambush. Choosing to strike while he was healing would clearly be the best opportunity; missing this chance would likely lead to unfavorable results for any subsequent ambush.
What was unexpected was Byron's extreme caution. He acted contrary to the ways of a Common Person, feigning retreat while actually shifting from light to darkness. Not only that, he abandoned a prime opportunity for ambush and quietly set up formations around them, intending to use the power of these formations to trap and kill the three. Such deep scheming was fitting for the Captain of the Divine Mercenary Corps.
As soon as Byron finished speaking, thick fog suddenly dissipated. Hong Lian moved like lightning, ready to charge forward, while Bu and Eve quickly executed their movements to escape the range of the formation.
However, this series of reactions was just as Byron had predicted; no matter how fast they were, could they outpace the Speed at which the formation activated?
Boom! Boom! Boom!
A series of dull roars suddenly erupted from beneath the ground. Amid Eve's exclamations, the land within a thirty-zhang radius cracked open. Fiery red lines converged from all directions and connected at lightning speed, forming a massive formation.
Without any warning, countless flames erupted from the deep pit created by the cracked earth, surging upward as if a volcano had erupted, bringing an immediate wave of intense heat.
Moreover, thirty zhang away, it seemed as if a barrier had formed; large amounts of fire elements gathered from all sides, transforming into a gigantic semi-circular Light Barrier that trapped the three within the formation like a cage.
Though everything appeared slow, it was actually as fast as lightning. Even with Hong Lian's terrifying Speed, he was forced to halt before he could break through ten zhang due to this sudden change.
Hong Lian's stop was not due to the threat posed by the fiery columns; even Outer Profound Fire could not harm him in the slightest—only restrain him. The mere flames formed by this formation were even less of a concern. The reason he halted was that Bu and Eve lacked immunity to fire damage.
Thinking about Hong Lian's exceptionally powerful Racial Gift made Bu's expression somewhat peculiar. With this sudden crisis looming over them, he felt considerably more at ease. Grabbing Eve's hand, they seemed to share a silent understanding as Water Energy surged from within them, forming a protective shield around their bodies.
Sizzle! Sizzle! Sizzle!
A series of Flame Pillars, as thick as tree trunks, struck the protective barrier surrounding the two, causing a large amount of white mist to rise from the impact of water and fire.
"Step, we need to think of a way to escape quickly. Our energy is limited, and if we remain trapped here, even if we manage to break the formation in the end, we will be completely drained of energy and Byron will drag us to our deaths," Eve said anxiously.
Feeling more and more fiery light pillars erupting from the ground, the intense heat that seemed to ignite the very air made Eve sweat profusely while also feeling extremely tense.
"It's fine, it's just a formation. Watch my brother," Step said dismissively, waving his hand. He then pretended to be relaxed as he brushed a stray hair from Eve's face. This act was tantamount to mockery, which made Byron, who was watching their movements from outside the formation, sneer in amusement.
"He's practically asking for death by falling into my carefully arranged Earthfire Formation and still has the mood for romance. How has such a fool survived this long?" Byron thought, feeling somewhat frustrated at having overestimated his opponent. However, when he saw the sudden appearance of the Red Figure beside Step and Eve, his disdain instantly turned into shock.
Inside the formation, which resembled a Sea of Fire, there was nowhere that wasn't engulfed in scorching heat. The temperature was so high that it melted the already damaged ground into Magma. One could imagine that even a piece of fine iron thrown in would be liquefied in no time.
Unexpectedly, a cold man with blood-red hair walked through this hellish fire as if it were a leisurely stroll. Despite being completely unguarded, he suffered no harm from the flames. In fact, as the Red-Haired Man moved forward, the fiery light pillars that were about to erupt beneath him seemed to hesitate and retract until he had passed by.
"How is this possible?" Even someone as composed as Byron found it hard to suppress his shock at this moment. His astonishment was evident on his face as he stood there in a daze.
"Scatter!"
Within the formation, as those icy words left the Red-Haired Man's lips, all the fiery light pillars between him and Step collapsed. The rising heat waves trembled and parted to create a clear path where Magma solidified into stone, and flames bent as if choosing to submit.
Exercising Fire's Right, all flames obeyed his command.
"Ah, Step!" Eve was just as shocked as Byron and stammered incoherently. Her beautiful eyes widened as she looked back and forth between Step and the Red-Haired Man, unsure of what to say.
"Let's go! I'll take you out of here right now," Step said with a carefree smile as he wrapped his arm around Eve's soft waist and activated Step Nine to soar through the air.
A crimson lotus opened the way ahead, forcing the flames to retreat. With a thought, a massive fire dragon formed from dozens of fiery pillars surged forth, roaring as it dove down, rapidly charging toward Byron's location.
With red hair billowing and intertwining with flames, the crimson lotus stood atop the fierce fire dragon, surrounded by swirling flames. Behind him, more fiery pillars gathered, trailing a long flame tail, resembling the descent of a fire deity.
"This is impossible!" Byron roared in anger and turned to flee. His mind was in a daze, filled with confusion, and he had lost the ability to think clearly.
The carefully arranged formation was nothing but a joke in the eyes of others. Not only that, but the formation was also controlled by others and turned against him. Byron had likely never experienced such a thing in his life.
He was panicking. As a peak Intermediate Level 5 powerhouse, fleeing without a fight would ruin the reputation that the Divine Mercenary Corps had built over many years. After all, he was Byron, the Captain of the Divine Mercenary Corps, a prominent figure in the mercenary world of Dysia Kingdom. Yet now, he looked like a frightened dog unable to find peace.
"Can you escape?" Bu Leng laughed, leisurely pursuing him. His calm demeanor made it seem less like a chase and more like an outing with a companion.
A thunderous explosion echoed!
Byron had barely run ten paces when he abruptly stopped. Just one meter in front of him, several fiery pillars suddenly shot up, sending sparks flying far away. A suffocating heat distorted the air around them.
The crimson lotus rode on an ever-growing fire dragon as it approached. Behind him, more flames gathered like living fire serpents from the Earthfire Formation, encircling Byron, whose expression was clouded with dread.
