Chapter Eleven: Complete Defeat
At this moment, inside the Beilan County Public Security Bureau, He Jun was in the director's office, separated from Director Wang Guodong by a desk. Wang Guodong leaned back in his chair, slightly furrowing his brow, and said earnestly, "Deputy Director He, you are one of the top three in the bureau. How could you do something like this? Zhang Qiu exited the police station and walked to the nearest bus stop. After waiting for about twenty minutes, a bus slowly approached and stopped in front of him. Zhang Qiu got off at Beilan High School but did not enter the school gate; instead, he rode an electric vehicle to the county hospital. As he passed by the front desk, he noticed that Wang Jinghan was not there today. A wave of disappointment washed over him; what was wrong with him? Shaking his head, Zhang Qiu entered the elevator.
Zhang Qiu's sudden appearance startled both Zhang Zhi Hua and He Mei. He Mei pulled Zhang Qiu over to ask if he was injured or anything like that. Zhang Zhi Hua appeared more composed but was also sizing up Zhang Qiu with keen eyes.
Zhang Qiu smiled and said, "I'm fine; they let me go." Suddenly remembering something, he asked, "Mom, did you call my uncle?"
"Yes, after you called me, I called your uncle," she replied.
Zhang Qiu nodded, thinking that this confirmed his suspicion. When Ma Zhen released him, he had thought perhaps it was his uncle helping him out. Now, He Mei had validated Zhang Qiu's guess.
"Fortunately, it was timely, and nothing happened. You better not post anything reckless again," He Mei urged Zhang Qiu, feeling a wave of fear at the thought of what could have happened to the child.
"Mom, I just stated the facts, but I was accused of spreading rumors. I suspect that this whole thing was orchestrated by the Relocation Office and their group," Zhang Qiu replied angrily.
In this situation, Zhang Qiu had indeed been wronged by the Relocation Office; they were not powerful enough to mobilize the police. It was Zhang Qiu's post that caught the attention of the County Party Secretary, who then summoned Director Chen, who was in charge of the relocation work. Director Chen subsequently contacted Wang Guodong. This chain of events ultimately led to Zhang Qiu's arrest.
"Alright, as long as you're safe, let's move past this. My leg is healed too; once I'm done with the IV, we can go home together," Zhang Zhi Hua said, looking at her son with concern but managing a helpless smile. Her son's personality mirrored her own, and she knew he wouldn't easily settle down.
Seeing that Zhang Qiu had returned safely, He Mei stepped aside to call He Jun. On the other end of the line, He Jun's voice sounded somewhat weak. He Mei sensed something was off and cautiously asked, "Brother, helping Qiu with this hasn't caused you any trouble, has it?"
He Jun chuckled bitterly on the other end but maintained a casual tone: "It's fine; Qiu was wronged from the start." This incident provided Wang Guodong another opportunity to suppress He Jun. He Jun understood that his influence would only diminish from here on out. Each time he thought about it, he couldn't help but feel frustrated.
Noticing her mother's troubled expression while on the phone, Zhang Qiu asked, "Mom, did this cause any trouble for my uncle?"
He Mei shook her head. "I'm not sure; your uncle seems fine. However, I felt something was off in his voice—maybe I'm just overthinking it."
"Yeah." Zhang Qiu understood in her heart that her mother hadn't misheard; this situation had indeed brought trouble to her uncle. After all, he was already marginalized and would inevitably offend Wang Guodong because of her. In this confrontation, she felt like she had lost completely. However, she wouldn't give up so easily. The more difficult things became, the more it ignited her fighting spirit.
"I really am going to take you on!" Zhang Qiu resolved silently in her heart.
