Chapter Twelve: No Longer Passive
Zhang Zhi Hua finished the last bottle of liquid, and He Mei went with the nurse to handle the discharge procedures. Zhang Zhi Hua's bones had healed well, and now he just needed to go home and rest.
After He Mei left, Zhang Zhi Hua looked at Zhang Qiu and smiled, "Son, you did well this time, just like a member of the Zhang Family."
Zhang Qiu was about to laugh when Zhang Zhi Hua followed up with another comment that made him hold back his laughter. Zhang Zhi Hua said, "However, this matter was too impulsive. I know you did it for your father's sake, and I understand that. But when you posted it, were you just seeking momentary satisfaction without considering the consequences? If it weren't for your uncle in the police force, you might have faced some serious trouble, right?"
Zhang Qiu lowered his head in shame.
Zhang Zhi Hua smiled and patted Zhang Qiu's head, saying, "Lift your head up; you didn't do anything wrong. Why are you looking down? I'm just saying you need to think things through more carefully. What you did wasn't wrong in itself. Remember, in the future, don't be so reckless; consider everything more thoroughly."
Only then did Zhang Qiu smile.
Zhang Zhi Hua continued, "The most important thing right now is to study hard and achieve good results in the college entrance examination so that you have more options for universities."
The sudden shift in topic caught Zhang Qiu off guard. He thought his father would give him some practical advice but was surprised when the conversation turned to his studies. For a moment, Zhang Qiu didn't know how to respond and chose to remain silent. However, he had to admit that his father was right; studying hard was indeed the most effective way to become stronger. Knowledge changes destiny, and Zhang Qiu believed in that saying.
"What are you two talking about?" He Mei entered with a stack of papers and smiled, "Everything is taken care of; we can go home now."
"Alright, let's go home," Zhang Zhi Hua said as he stood up with the help of his crutch. Zhang Qiu quickly supported him from the side. After He Mei packed up their things, the three of them slowly made their way to the elevator. Once they reached the first floor, He Mei went to get the car while Zhang Qiu helped Zhang Zhi Hua wait at the lobby entrance. The sunlight slanted in from the side, gradually elongating their shadows on the ground.
At noon, to celebrate Zhang Zhi Hua's discharge from the hospital, He Mei prepared a lavish lunch. There were braised pork, stewed ribs, cola chicken wings, and salt-and-pepper shrimp—all dishes that both father and son loved. Zhang Zhi Hua was so excited that he opened a bottle of wine and poured a glass for Zhang Qiu, asking, "Want to drink?" It's worth noting that usually he wouldn't allow Zhang Qiu to drink alcohol.
"Sure!" Zhang Qiu replied readily. After all, alcohol is a man's drink, and he really wanted to taste what it was like.
"You're not allowed to drink!" He Mei hurried over and snatched the cup away, saying, "The doctor said you can't drink. Zhang Qiu can't either; you have class in the afternoon. Why drink when there’s so much good food? Just eat more."
Zhang Zhi Hua looked at He Mei pitifully and pleaded, "Just one drink, okay? It's a rare occasion to be happy." Zhang Qiu noticed that his father was genuinely happy today, which was a rare sight. This feeling made Zhang Qiu feel as if he had just eaten a big bowl of dog food.
He Mei hesitated for a moment but couldn’t resist her husband's eager gaze. "Alright then, just one cup, but don’t drink too much!"
"Great!" Zhang Zhi Hua smiled as he took the cup and said to Zhang Qiu, "Come on, son, let’s toast."
Zhang Qiu raised his cup and clinked it with his father's. The liquor spilled out due to the clumsiness of their glasses. Zhang Qiu took a sip and felt a fiery sensation in his throat that made him cough involuntarily.
"Eat some food to wash it down," Zhang Zhi Hua said with a smile as he looked at Zhang Qiu, feeling quite pleased. This incident allowed him to see a mature side of Zhang Qiu. He suddenly remembered his own youth when he first drank alcohol and had the same reaction. Young him was also somewhat impulsive and reckless, just like Zhang Qiu today. No wonder he was his son; even the way he did things resembled him so much.
During this time, the father and son chatted about many things, from food to recent news, even discussing national affairs. Zhang Qiu felt that he had never communicated with his father like this before. It was a wonderful feeling.
After lunch, Zhang Qiu returned to his room and took out his phone to send a message to Wang Jinghan: "My dad is back home from the hospital." After sending the message, he waited for a while but received no reply from Wang Jinghan. Zhang Qiu shook his head and dialed Yang Yu's number.
"Brother Qiu, what's up?" Yang Yu always answered the phone so quickly.
"I just went to the police station..." Before Zhang Qiu could finish, Yang Yu interrupted him: "Brother Qiu, why did you go to the police station?"
"I posted about Liu Xiaolong online, and as a result, they arrested me."
"Wow, this is outrageous. It's really too much. Liu Xiaolong isn't anything special; if it weren't for his brother-in-law being the director, he wouldn't have reached this position." Among those in the underworld, Yang Yu particularly looked down on Liu Xiaolong. Although everyone in this line of work had their hands dirty, they had all fought tooth and nail to get where they were. Liu Xiaolong was different; he relied on his brother-in-law to act recklessly. However, there were indeed a group of people willing to follow him.
"Keep an eye on his movements for me."
"Brother Qiu, are you planning to take action against him?" Yang Yu's voice sounded somewhat excited.
"Yes!"
From the moment Zhang Qiu stepped out of the police station, he decided to take action. If he continued to be passive like this, he would eventually be finished!
