Chapter 35: Annoying Phone Call
Wang Guodong was sleeping soundly when suddenly a phone call interrupted his sweet dreams. He was too lazy to answer, but the phone kept ringing incessantly. The woman snuggled up next to him reached out her arm, grabbed the phone, and held it up to his ear, saying, "Answer it; there might be something important."
With bleary eyes, Wang Guodong looked at the woman in his arms and gently stroked her hair. Taking the phone, he couldn't help but frown. After answering, he said irritably, "What’s going on so early in the morning? What time is it?"
After a few words on the other end of the line, Wang Guodong's expression changed dramatically from angry red to a shade resembling liver. The woman beside him noticed his unusual reaction and asked with concern, "What’s wrong?"
"My brother-in-law has been taken to the police station; I need to go check on him quickly. Otherwise... hey, you know what I mean." Wang Guodong began to get dressed.
"Hmph." The woman shot him a glare and said unhappily, "So your wife is more important than me? When you’re with your wife, I don’t say anything, but now that you’re here with me, you have to leave because of your brother-in-law."
Wang Guodong's expression suddenly turned cold, and he replied sternly, "What are you talking about? This matter could be targeting me; I need to handle it quickly. If something happens to me, your good days will be over too."
The woman leaned closer, feeling wronged as she helped Wang Guodong get dressed. Once he was fully dressed, he affectionately touched her hand and softly said, "I just snapped at you; don’t hold it against me. I really have something important to take care of. Wait for me; I'll come back tonight."
Wang Guodong then took out a card from his pocket and said, "This is what they gave me; there’s five thousand yuan in it. When you have time, go shopping."
The woman cheerfully accepted the card and gave him a light kiss on the cheek.
On the way, Wang Guodong had already figured out what was happening. This incident was likely orchestrated by He Jun. He suddenly realized why things felt off; perhaps the so-called brawlers that He Jun had sent to arrest were actually his own brother-in-law.
But what could he do with just this information? He couldn’t understand why someone as straightforward as He Jun would do such a thing. If it really was He Jun behind this, he would definitely not let him off easily!
No matter what, Wang Guodong needed to hurry over. He was well aware of Liu Xiaolong's character and feared that something chaotic might happen. Although it wouldn't have a significant impact on him personally, it certainly wasn't a glorious situation to be involved in.
Upon arriving at the police station, someone was already waiting at the entrance. His name was Feng Wei, who often flattered the director and naturally knew the director's nephew. This morning, he happened to overhear discussions about the director's nephew being caught by the deputy director. Feng Wei immediately realized this was an opportunity and promptly called Wang Guodong to inform him.
Seeing Wang Guodong arrive, Feng Wei hurriedly approached to open the car door, bowing and greeting him, "Director Wang, you're here!"
Wang Guodong looked at Feng Wei and nodded, exuding an aura of authority without needing to raise his voice. Under the sunlight, the badge on his cap gleamed brightly.
Feng Wei had hoped for some praise from the director, but Wang Guodong didn't linger and headed straight for the interrogation room. He pushed open the door and saw Liu Xiaolong gulping down water. Sitting at the interrogation table was He Jun, who usually maintained a friendly demeanor. Wang Guodong couldn't understand why He Jun had suddenly become so assertive.
He Jun noticed Wang Guodong's arrival and inwardly cursed himself for being a step too slow. Wang Guodong looked sternly at He Jun, and his meaning was clear: he expected an explanation.
He Jun maintained a smile; at this point, there was nothing else he could do but stay calm. He pointed at Liu Xiaolong sitting in the interrogation chair and said, "Director Wang is here; this is the mastermind behind the fight incident outside the county hospital that I previously discussed with you. Moreover, he is also involved in intentional injury during the demolition process."
Wang Guodong immediately understood; He Jun's actions were justified. As the saying goes, even a rabbit will bite when cornered—let alone a deputy director of a police station.
Wang Guodong had heard about Liu Xiaolong's assault during a meeting at the county government; he had brushed it off since higher authorities wanted it suppressed. The person injured during the demolition was none other than He Jun's brother-in-law. Wang Guodong had even spoken to He Jun about it once before, when He Jun had shown signs of resistance. Now, it seemed he was using the fight incident at the county hospital as an excuse to deal with Liu Xiaolong. Realizing this made Wang Guodong smile; clearly, He Jun wasn't targeting him intentionally.
With a smile returning to his face, Wang Guodong thought that since public affairs were mixed with personal matters, it would be easier to handle. He addressed He Jun, "He Bureau, regarding that demolition case, I think we should consider the bigger picture and prioritize stability. After all, higher authorities have already set the tone; causing a stir wouldn't be good for us. However, since my irresponsible nephew has assaulted someone, compensation is necessary."
Having reached this point, He Jun understood that there was no way to keep Liu Xiaolong out of trouble now. But he didn't want to let it go easily. He continued, "Director Wang, compensation is acceptable; having some acknowledgment would certainly ease our minds..."
Before He Jun could finish his sentence, Wang Guodong interjected smoothly, "That's more like it! A win-win situation is indeed a great thing for our county."
"Those people who were fighting at the county hospital, they definitely need to be dealt with, right?" He Jun's words were interrupted as he fixed his piercing gaze on Wang Guodong.
