Chapter 36: Turning the Tide
Wang Guodong waved his hand and said, "The matter of the county hospital is the county hospital's business. The nature of this incident is serious, and it must be dealt with strictly and severely."
As soon as Wang Guodong finished speaking, Liu Xiaolong hurriedly called out "brother-in-law." Wang Guodong glared at him and shouted, "Don't say anything. You injured someone, and you must be punished. However, considering that you were working on the old city renovation and the victim hasn't filed a lawsuit, compensating for medical expenses and lost wages is already quite good."
"Deputy Director He, what do you think of this handling?" Wang Guodong asked with a slight smile as he looked at He Jun, confident that this approach would pose no issues.
He Jun felt a hundred unwillingnesses in his heart but had no choice. He lacked the power to contend with Wang Guodong, and the way Wang Guodong handled it also saved him face. At this point, He Jun could only let it go. If there was blame to assign, it was for his own slowness in seizing the opportunity.
He Jun concealed his displeasure and maintained a smile as he said to Wang Guodong, "I think this handling will satisfy everyone."
Wang Guodong did not leave the interrogation room but stood quietly at the door. Once He Jun realized Wang Guodong's intention, he pointed at Liu Xiaolong and said, "Go on, behave yourself in the future and don't break the law again."
"Hmph." Liu Xiaolong shot a fierce glare at He Jun and stood up to leave but was stopped by Wang Hailong. Wang Hailong looked at He Jun with agitation, his facial muscles trembling slightly as he exclaimed, "He Bureau, are you really just letting him go like this?"
He Jun waved his hand and said, "Let him go."
Sighing heavily, Wang Hailong shook his hand forcefully and walked aside, feeling quite unsettled.
As soon as Liu Xiaolong exited the interrogation room, he hurriedly grabbed Wang Guodong's arm. Wang Guodong frowned and said in a low voice, "Come to my office."
Liu Xiaolong had no choice but to comply; he was still quite afraid of his brother-in-law, especially since he had just saved him. With each step toward the office, he felt as if flames were burning behind him. He wanted to run, but Wang Guodong walked leisurely. In the interrogation room, Wang Guodong had explicitly demanded strict punishment for those involved in the fight at the county hospital—those were all his people, including his own brother Xiaofei. How could he not feel anxious?
Like Tang Seng enduring the eighty-one tribulations, Liu Xiaolong finally reached the door of the director's office. As soon as he entered, he eagerly locked the door and called out to his brother-in-law.
Wang Guodong looked at his disappointing nephew and sighed lightly, pointing to a row of chairs beside the desk. "Move a chair over and sit down."
Wang Guodong felt helpless towards this nephew. Every time he criticized him, Liu Xiaolong would promise to do better, but soon forget all his words. His wife doted on her only younger brother, and every time Liu Xiaolong got into trouble, it inevitably became a hassle for him to deal with.
"Xiao Long, in the future, let your brother handle things. Don't always seek the spotlight yourself. If you keep causing trouble like this, it will have a bad impact. If something serious happens, I won't be able to protect you," Wang Guodong said earnestly.
"I understand, brother-in-law. I'll listen to you," Liu Xiaolong replied absentmindedly. Suddenly changing the subject, he said, "Brother-in-law, about the case against the county hospital you mentioned earlier, you can't go too hard on them; Xiaofei is involved."
Upon hearing this, Wang Guodong slammed the table. "Nonsense! You all are making things difficult for me." After a moment, he added, "The matter with Xiaofei isn't serious; a 15-day detention will teach him a lesson."
Seeing that Liu Xiaolong wanted to say more, Wang Guodong interrupted him. "That's enough. You can go now. Be good during this time and don't cause any more trouble."
Wang Guodong's anger frightened Liu Xiaolong. He swallowed his words and left the director's office awkwardly. A few steps outside the police station, Liu Xiaolong's demeanor changed again. This time, his brother and a group of friends had been taken in by the police; even he had almost ended up in there. He couldn't swallow this anger.
Although Liu Xiaolong had left, the anger he left behind still lingered with Wang Guodong. He suddenly realized that He Jun might not be as honest as he appeared. If this was a carefully planned event by He Jun, even if he saved Xiao Long, it would still allow He Jun to gain an advantage. After this incident, he had to reevaluate his relationship with He Jun.
As for Liu Xiaofei, he was merely a cousin to Liu Xiaolong; their relationship wasn't that close anymore. Moreover, since he had already decided to take strict action, changing his mind would only undermine his authority. It might be better to let Xiaofei endure some hardship; it could help temper his character.
Wang Guodong sank into his leather chair, his furrowed brow making his already wrinkled forehead appear even more rugged. He connected a series of recent events and sensed a strong smell of gunpowder permeating the police station. Current signs indicated that He Jun, who had been quiet for so long, was no longer content with the status quo and wanted to make moves.
Wang Guodong would never allow anyone to shake his authority!
