Chapter 52: The Director Invites to Dinner
"Director Wang." Zhou Guanghai and Director Ma stood up together, respectfully addressing him. Zhang Qiu and Liu Fangfei remained seated, but both focused their attention on the incoming Director Wang.
Zhang Qiu observed Wang Guodong. On the surface, Wang Guodong wore a smile and appeared amiable, but his eyes were deep and dark like a devil in the night, sending chills down one's spine. He must be a ruthless character; the more he seemed this way, the more excited Zhang Qiu felt.
Wang Guodong smiled warmly, and everyone could feel his powerful presence. Zhou Guanghai pulled out a chair for Wang Guodong, who sat down and scrutinized Zhang Qiu, cheerfully saying, "You are Zhang Qiu, Deputy Director He's nephew, right?"
"Yes." With Wang Guodong's gaze on him, Zhang Qiu felt uncomfortable all over.
"Very good." While Wang Guodong smiled on the outside, he thought to himself that indeed, a young calf is not afraid of tigers. Go ahead and be bold; there will come a time when you cry. The affairs of the Public Security Bureau are not something just anyone can meddle in. After managing this for so many years, it can't be completely airtight, but it is certainly solid as iron.
Wang Guodong then turned his attention to the only lady present. His smile became less official and more friendly as he said, "Liu Fangfei, Liu Journalist, good, good. A tiger father has no dog daughter." His tone was like that of a kind uncle praising his niece, completely different from the decisive demeanor he had when ordering arrests in the city.
After sending Zhou Guanghai away, Wang Guodong personally investigated Liu Fangfei's background. He was shocked by what he found; Liu Fangfei was indeed impressive.
Liu Fangfei offered a symbolic smile; she had heard enough of such pleasantries to have developed an immunity to them. Many people treated her well because of her father, which did not make her happy but rather annoyed her.
In contrast, Zhang Qiu made Liu Fangfei feel warm. This high school student was unaware of her identity and was one of the few who cared for her after her troubles besides her family.
Wang Guodong's words awakened something in Zhang Qiu. From the moment he heard about Liu Fangfei's release, he sensed something was off. His uncle had long been marginalized and would not have such power.
Just downstairs, when Zhou Guanghai invited Liu Fangfei to dinner, it further confirmed for Zhang Qiu that Liu Fangfei's release had nothing to do with his uncle; it likely stemmed from other sources of influence.
Now, after listening to Wang Guodong, Zhang Qiu can basically confirm that Liu Journalist's father is an extraordinary figure.
From the moment Wang Guodong entered, the waitstaff began serving dishes without needing to be prompted. The waitstaff on this floor are experienced and beautiful, able to recognize who the main guest is at a glance. Moreover, Director Wang frequently visits, so nearly everyone here has witnessed his presence.
With all the dishes served, a table full of delicacies made Zhang Qiu gasp in amazement. Wow, this is too extravagant; Zhang Qiu had never seen so many delicious foods before.
Zhou Guanghai waved his hand, and all the waitstaff left the private room. Zhang Qiu knew it was time to discuss serious matters. Wang Guodong and Liu Fangfei were the main figures of this meal. Understanding this, Zhang Qiu quietly sat in his seat, observing Wang Guodong.
With the waitstaff gone, it was up to Zhou Guanghai, the chief secretary, to pour the wine himself. Zhou Guanghai stood up and took a crystal-clear decanter from the ice bucket nearby, pouring wine into everyone's glasses. This choice of red wine was not a special consideration for Liu Fangfei but rather a directive from Director Chen of the county that all official receptions must use locally produced red wine.
Zhou Guanghai stopped in front of Zhang Qiu and smiled as he asked, "Would you like me to get you a drink?"
Zhang Qiu sensed the condescension in Zhou Guanghai's words and stubbornly replied, "I want red wine, thank you." As he spoke, Zhang Qiu squinted at Zhou Guanghai, indicating that he saw through the other's ploy.
Zhou Guanghai remained unfazed and continued to smile as he poured red wine into Zhang Qiu's glass before returning to his seat.
Seeing that the timing was right, Wang Guodong spoke up: "Liu Journalist, we deeply regret what happened regarding your arrest. According to our investigation, it was one of our officers named Feng Wei who took it upon himself to bring you back after seeing the report in Youth Daily. We will not protect this comrade; appropriate actions have already been taken." Wang Guodong finished with a smile, swirling his glass of red wine as he observed Liu Fangfei's reaction.
"Oh," Liu Fangfei replied lightly. "What actions were taken?"
Zhou Guanghai timely interjected: "Feng Wei's actions have harmed the image of our public security department and caused trouble for news organizations. After organizational review, it has been decided that Comrade Feng Wei will receive a formal reprimand and will be suspended from duty effective immediately."
Liu Fangfei scoffed coldly and said, "Is it really that simple?"
Zhou Guanghai explained, "Comrade Feng Wei has been doing well and working diligently. His acknowledgment of mistakes this time was also very proactive. Considering he hasn't made a major error and has a wife and children at home, the suspension is already quite serious for him."
"Oh, then let's leave it at that." Liu Fangfei didn't want to dwell on the matter any longer. It wasn't that she had forgiven them; rather, she deeply understood these tricks. Feng Wei was merely a scapegoat, and she didn't want to make things difficult for him. It was already quite evident that Zhou Guanghai, who participated in her arrest, could sit here and eat with her so casually. It was obvious who was pulling Zhou Guanghai's strings.
After hearing Liu Fangfei's words, Wang Guodong clapped his hands. "Liu Journalist is quite understanding. If everyone were like Liu Journalist, our work would be much easier."
Zhou Guanghai and Director Ma also chimed in, making Zhang Qiu feel nauseated.
"Liu Journalist, in my opinion, we shouldn't continue reporting on the relocation issue. You know that there are many obstacles in the relocation work, and some incidents are bound to occur. However, our intentions are good; it's all for the betterment of the people's lives," Wang Guodong said.
Liu Fangfei pondered for a moment and looked at Zhang Qiu, who was staring at his wine glass. "Since the person involved is right here, Director Wang should have a talk with him."
Wang Guodong smiled and said, "We will resolve this matter well; we just hope Liu Journalist can go easy on the reporting."
With a loud crash, Zhang Qiu slammed his wine glass on the table and said, "What about my dad being injured by your uncle? How do you plan to handle that?"
The atmosphere suddenly became tense. Zhou Guanghai slightly stood up, like a guard ready to defend Wang Guodong at any moment. Zhang Qiu looked seriously at Wang Guodong, while Liu Fangfei was secretly astonished; she didn't expect Zhang Qiu to be so bold.
