Chapter Seventy-Nine: A False Joy
The afterglow of the setting sun painted the horizon red, and the river reflected a round red sun along with the swaying water plants on the opposite bank. Zhang Qiu and Wang Jinghan walked hand in hand along the cool park path, their shadows gradually stretching in the dusk.
When they reached a pavilion, they stopped and sat down on a bench to rest. Zhang Qiu pointed at the water surface in the distance and said, "Han Han, do you see that over there? Does it look like a water bird?"
"Where?" Wang Jinghan squinted to look but didn’t see any animals on the water surface. Just as she was about to turn her head to ask Zhang Qiu where the water bird was, she found Zhang Qiu leaning in to kiss her.
Zhang Qiu intended to steal a quick kiss, but he didn’t expect Wang Jinghan to suddenly turn around. In that split second, Zhang Qiu made a decision and continued to kiss her. He was prepared to be pushed away again, but what surprised him was that instead of pushing him away, Wang Jinghan closed her eyes.
What is this? Is she accepting me? The happiness came too suddenly; Zhang Qiu had not anticipated this at all. Previously, Wang Jinghan had been so insistent and seemed to have some secret to tell him. But now, she was actually accepting him. As Zhang Qiu felt overwhelmed with excitement, a familiar melody drifted from afar.
Who is playing music? Zhang Qiu clearly remembered not seeing anyone along the way. Looking back again, wait? How did the person in his arms turn into Jiang Xue?
Suddenly, Zhang Qiu's mind buzzed; this couldn’t be a dream! Realizing this, he abruptly woke up and opened his eyes to find that he was not in any park but clearly in his bedroom, while his phone was ringing incessantly beside him.
Zhang Qiu felt his heart racing wildly. He took a few deep breaths until his heartbeat gradually calmed down. He sighed inwardly; it turned out that everything was just a dream. Yet, this dream felt so real, as if it had truly happened. Moreover, he had slept so soundly for the first time in a long while.
His phone continued ringing beside him. Although the music was "Love in the Vast Sky," which he loved to listen to, Zhang Qiu felt no joy at all. It was because of this phone call that his beautiful dream was interrupted; otherwise, he would have kissed Wang Jinghan—or perhaps Jiang Xue.
As Zhang Qiu thought this way, he still picked up his phone from beside him. Upon seeing the number, he understood what it was about. After answering, he said, "Director Zhao, hello. What can I do for you?"
"Zhang Qiu, considering your review issues during the college entrance examination period, the school has decided after discussion to have you return to school for study tomorrow. How does it feel to hear this news? You must be very happy," Director Zhao chuckled on the other end of the line, sounding amiable and completely different from when he had coldly sent Zhang Qiu home for reflection earlier.
Zhang Qiu couldn't help but marvel at the efficiency of the Glasses Man; it seemed these people were truly going all out for the relocation. His father was wise to see that relocation was an inevitable trend, and negotiating terms was the best way to secure a chance to return to school. However, Zhang Qiu said, "Director Zhao, I want to thank you and the school in advance; you must have put in a lot of effort, right?"
Director Zhao continued to smile and replied, "It's great that you can understand my concerns."
Zhang Qiu smiled briefly before adding, "But Director Zhao, I can't be happy about this."
Hearing Zhang Qiu's tone, Director Zhao's expression immediately turned cold as he asked over the phone, "Zhang Qiu, what trouble are you trying to stir up now?"
Zhang Qiu replied with a smile, "Director Zhao, I'm not causing any trouble; I just want to know if the other students in our class can also return to classes. After all, they acted that way to help their classmates."
"Zhang Qiu, I've already been quite lenient with you; don't push your luck! Remember to come back to class. As for how we handle other students, it can't be generalized."
Listening to Director Zhao's icy voice made Zhang Qiu frown. He responded coldly, "Director Zhao, I think it's best if everyone returns. If it's just me alone, I won't feel at ease. I appreciate the school's goodwill, but if that's the case, then let's drop this matter."
"Zhang Qiu! I warn you not to always think about bargaining with the school." Director Zhao's voice became serious. "You know very well why you're allowed to return; it's because you exploited a loophole in the policy. For the welfare of all the people in Beilan County, the school has been generous. You should be grateful."
Zhang Qiu scoffed at Director Zhao's words; it was just another set of clichés. However, he had to force himself to remain calm because angering Director Zhao would do no good in resolving matters. "Director Zhao, I have always respected you. You know we are about to graduate; every moment is crucial for us graduates, especially now. I hope you can reconsider and discuss this with the school. Doing so would also show our school's tolerance, wouldn't it?"
Zhang Qiu's earnest attitude was unprecedented; he could only approach Director Zhao this way. Someone used to managing others cannot easily tolerate being asked by those they manage. Although Zhang Qiu had leverage over Director Zhao, he couldn't use it frequently; even a cornered dog will jump over a wall when desperate.
The Glasses Man fulfilled his promise—a promise made at the cost of his own house—and Zhang Qiu couldn't let that go to waste but also couldn't simply agree without thought. Zhang Qiu was no longer alone; he represented a group of brothers who followed him. Since his Brothers were with him, Zhang Qiu had to take full responsibility for them. To maximize benefits, he needed to be sincere and even flattering.
The conversation fell silent for a moment, but Zhang Qiu could hear voices from within. Director Zhao was not alone; there were certainly others around him. Although Zhang Qiu couldn't make out their conversation clearly, he was certain they were discussing whether Gao Zhi and the others could return to classes.
After a while, Director Zhao's voice reappeared on the microphone: "Zhang Qiu, your classmates can come back to school."
Zhang Qiu felt a surge of excitement and hurriedly thanked him, but Director Zhao continued, "Since they are coming back, everyone must return, including Wang Zhen and the others. They all need to come back to class."
Although Zhang Qiu had a million reasons to be unwilling, he had no choice. As long as Gao Zhi and the others could return, he would let Wang Zhen and his group have this one time.
Director Zhao went on, "Once you all return, regardless of any deep-seated grudges, no one is allowed to cause trouble. Anyone who does not study properly will be dealt with seriously by the school, and no one will be able to plead for them!" By the end, Director Zhao was practically shouting.
Zhang Qiu hung up the phone, his face beaming with joy. Director Zhao's admonitions had already been cast aside. He quickly called Gao Zhi, Wang Zhengxiang, Chuan, and Yao Yu to share this exciting news with them.
