Chapter 142: Auntie Comes to Visit
Wang Jinghan looked at Zhang Qiu and realized it was indeed not good. After a moment's thought, she said, "I have an idea, wait for me here." Without waiting for Zhang Qiu to respond, she ran out of the hospital room. In a short while, Wang Jinghan returned holding a denim jacket and handed it to Zhang Qiu, saying, "This is a colleague's. I borrowed it for you to wear. Once you put it on, we can leave quickly."
"Okay." With Wang Jinghan's help, Zhang Qiu put on the jacket. Wang Jinghan looked Zhang Qiu up and down and said, "It fits well, a bit big, but you look pretty cool in a jacket—much better than my colleague."
Zhang Qiu forced a smile and said, "Let's go."
"Sure." Wang Jinghan nodded and draped one of Zhang Qiu's arms over her shoulder, supporting him as they walked out of the hospital room.
In an office, a young man in his twenties wearing a floral shirt was lounging comfortably in his chair, daydreaming. Just moments ago, the girl he had been pursuing suddenly came to him and borrowed his denim jacket. He had put in so much effort trying to win her over but had failed; yet the more elusive she was, the more he liked her. His family had arranged a job for him, so he chose to come to the hospital thinking it would be a good place to meet girls. The hospital was full of beautiful women, especially fresh graduates from nursing school. These girls were naive and made perfect targets for him. After trying several different approaches with various girls, he found himself drawn to the slightly domineering Wang Jinghan.
Wang Jinghan was different from other girls; the harder she was to pursue, the more interested he became. If she was coming to borrow clothes from him, that must mean something was starting to develop between them. Just then, a familiar figure passed by the door. The young doctor hurriedly chased after them and was instantly furious when he saw Wang Jinghan walking closely with another guy in the hallway. Wang Jinghan had her arm around the guy's waist while his hand rested on her shoulder. To make matters worse, that guy was wearing his jacket.
The young doctor gritted his teeth in anger and turned back into the room, slamming the door behind him: "Wang Jinghan! I refuse to believe I can't get you!"
A few meters away from the county hospital entrance were numerous taxis waiting for passengers. Wang Jinghan called over one taxi and helped Zhang Qiu into it before sitting beside him. After telling the driver their destination, she added, "Please drive fast; we have an urgent matter."
"Got it," replied the taxi driver as he stepped on the gas pedal, causing the car to lurch forward with such force that both Zhang Qiu and Wang Jinghan were pressed tightly against the back seat.
Inside the car, Wang Jinghan asked Zhang Qiu, "How did you end up at your house? What about Second Uncle and Auntie? What happened to Jiang Xue's parents?"
Mentioning Jiang Xue made Zhang Qiu feel sad again as he slowly replied, "Jiang Xue is a poor child; her father passed away when she was very young. Her mother remarried into another family that treated Jiang Xue poorly, so her mother sent her to live with Jiang Xue's Second Uncle."
"Why did her mother find a man who treats Jiang Xue poorly?" Wang Jinghan thought to herself. Even raising the child alone would be better than finding a man who is bad for Jiang Xue.
"Her mom seems to be bewitched, completely obedient to that man, while gradually neglecting Jiang Xue. She just sends some money monthly and doesn't even meet her anymore."
"How can there still be such people in this world?"
Zhang Qiu chuckled and said, "What’s this? There are even more outrageous things. Do you know how her mother treats her?"
"How?" Wang Jinghan asked.
"Her mother directly told her, 'This person is your dad; he changed his appearance after getting sick.'"
"How could her mother say that..." Wang Jinghan felt it was unbelievable. What Zhang Qiu had just mentioned, although absurd, was still somewhat acceptable as reality. But now, this was simply absurd. No normal person would weave such a lie.
"Jiang Xue never believed it, and the more she didn't believe it, the more her mother treated her that way. And that's not all; that man kept trying to hit her. Left with no choice, she had to stay at Second Uncle's house."
"Then Second Uncle is quite nice." Wang Jinghan felt suppressed by such absurdity; at least there was a bit of normalcy in this situation.
Zhang Qiu sighed with a bitter smile, and Wang Jinghan widened her eyes and asked, "Is it my fault?"
"You’re right; Second Uncle is a good person, honest and kind. But the problem lies in that honesty."
"Why?" Wang Jinghan's heart was tugged by Jiang Xue's story, and she was eager to know what happened next.
"Because Second Uncle is honest and kind-hearted, he is afraid of his wife, Auntie. Auntie Jiang Xue is quite formidable; she doesn't want Jiang Xue to keep mooching off her. However, in this regard, her mother still acts like a mother, regularly giving money to Auntie's household, but Auntie still refuses. Fortunately, Jiang Xue usually lives at school and only goes home for two days a month; otherwise, Auntie would have kicked her out long ago."
"Hey, why are you crying?" Zhang Qiu was so immersed in Jiang Xue's tragic background that he didn't notice Wang Jinghan had tears streaming down her face.
Wang Jinghan lowered her head and sobbed, "It's so pitiful; Jiang Xue is really too pitiful..." She started crying again, causing the taxi driver to keep turning his head to look back.
Zhang Qiu watched and didn't know how to comfort her, so he gently patted Wang Jinghan on the head. Wang Jinghan lifted her head, her eyes red, glaring at Zhang Qiu and angrily said, "You better not let Jiang Xue down. If you dare to hurt her, I won't let you off."
Upon hearing Wang Jinghan's words, Zhang Qiu first found it amusing. Of course he would take care of his own girlfriend; how could he possibly let her down? Did he need her to remind him? But then he felt a wave of emotion. The fact that Wang Jinghan could say such things showed that she was also a person of strong feelings; he hadn't chosen the wrong friend.
After offering some comforting words, Wang Jinghan calmed down. The taxi stopped in front of Zhang Qiu's house, and as Zhang Qiu handed over the money, the driver asked while turning around, "Are you guys going to be relocated?"
Jiang Xue was already standing outside the door. Zhang Qiu slowly moved to the car door while Wang Jinghan helped him get out. Only then did she reply with a "yes." Before the driver could finish his sentence, Zhang Qiu slammed the car door shut with a bang and hurriedly opened the gate to go inside. The taxi driver was left stifling half a sentence and took a while before starting the car and leaving.
As soon as the gate opened, Big Yellow Dog rushed over first, rubbing against Zhang Qiu's legs before sniffing around Jiang Xue and circling them twice with its tail wagging obediently. Standing in the yard, Zhang Qiu could already hear loud noises coming from the living room—an unfamiliar and jarring voice chattering incessantly. This must be Auntie, Zhang Qiu thought as he was about to enter the house when the living room door swung open first.
