Chapter 144: Does She Even Have Her Period?
Zhang Qiu looked at Auntie with a cold smile and said, "Auntie, have you ever heard the phrase 'bullying too much'? Do you think I'm easy to mess with? You keep calling her Jiang Xue, but how have you treated Jiang Xue? Am I not clear about that?" Zhang Qiu's eyes widened as she looked down at Auntie from above.
"Sit down. Who are you trying to scare? I'm telling you, don't talk nonsense," Auntie said, her eyes darting around as she leaned back tightly against the sofa, wishing she could sink into it.
"In your house, don't you always make Jiang Xue sweep the floor and do the laundry? In the freezing cold, you make her wash with cold water, right?" Zhang Qiu questioned Auntie with a stern expression.
"That's because Jiang Xue felt embarrassed and took the initiative to do it. As for the cold water, we in the countryside don't have hot water like you city folks do. We have to use cold water," Auntie defended herself, though her voice lowered involuntarily.
Zhang Qiu pointed at Auntie without holding back: "When she has her period and is in so much pain that she can't even stand up straight, do you still force her to do laundry?"
"Her period? Does she even have her period?"
Auntie's words abruptly cut off what Zhang Qiu was about to say, revealing that Auntie didn't even know what a period was. Zhang Qiu glanced at her parents and Wang Jinghan beside her, feeling embarrassed. It was Wang Jinghan who helped Zhang Qiu explain to Auntie: "Her period means menstruation; every woman has to go through it."
Auntie suddenly understood but then raised her chubby face proudly and said, "What's so great about it? When I had mine, I still washed clothes and cooked while taking care of the kids. It's been like this for hundreds of years; why can't she handle it?"
"It's the twenty-first century now; it's a new China, not the late Qing Dynasty!" Zhang Qiu shouted at Auntie. Why should women make things difficult for other women? When a woman turns against another woman, that's truly ruthless.
He Mei gently tugged at Zhang Qiu's sleeve from the side. Zhang Zhi Hua turned to Auntie and said, "In my opinion, arguing won't help; we need to think of a way to help Jiang Xue."
Zhang Zhi Hua had been listening intently to Zhang Qiu's words without speaking earlier. At first, he thought Auntie was concerned about Jiang Xue, and their quarrel was understandable. But now it seemed that things were not as he had imagined. After Zhang Zhi Hua spoke, Second Uncle, who had been shrinking in the corner, suddenly chimed in: "Brother, you're right; what's most important now is to find a way to rescue Jiang Xue."
"Shut up," Auntie glared fiercely at her husband. Second Uncle obediently shrank back into his corner again, but his eyes were filled with hope as he looked at Zhang Qiu.
Wang Jinghan took the opportunity to gently tug at Zhang Qiu's shirt corner. When Zhang Qiu turned to look at her, she quietly asked, "Is your wound okay? Take it easy."
Zhang Qiu smiled lightly. "Don't worry."
"Zhang Qiu," Zhang Zhi Hua called out, "explain the whole situation. I believe Second Uncle and Auntie are still unaware of what happened."
Auntie was about to erupt again, but upon hearing Zhang Zhi Hua ask Zhang Qiu to recount the events, she temporarily quieted down. However, her eyes still glared at Zhang Qiu with hostility, as if they had a deep-seated grudge against each other.
Although Auntie had calmed down, Zhang Qiu found herself in a difficult position. Where should she even begin? Should she tell her parents that instead of focusing on studying for the college entrance exam, their son had gathered a group of people to cause trouble? If she did that, she would surely be in for a beating.
In the end, Zhang Qiu could only summarize the events like a government official after heavy editing: "The trouble started with Liu Xiaolong. After my uncle took office, Liu Xiaolong sought revenge by gathering a group of spoiled kids from our school to make trouble for me. They took me to the ancient city behind the school. This incident became quite big; many classmates knew about it. Your son is well-liked, and his friends were worried I would get hurt, so they came to help me. Jiang Xue also went along; she got hurt trying to save me. Otherwise, I would have been the one in the hospital."
As Zhang Qiu spoke, she observed her parents' expressions. Her father, Zhang Zhi Hua, appeared calm on the surface, but that only made things more serious. He Mei listened to Zhang Qiu and was already pale with fear, not saying a word and just staring intently at Zhang Qiu.
Just as Zhang Qiu was feeling troubled, Auntie broke the brief silence and roared at Zhang Qiu with a fierce expression: "What do you mean it's not your fault? If it weren't for you, my niece wouldn't be in this situation. Going to prison—she's just a girl! Her life is ruined!" With that, Auntie even started wiping away tears.
Zhang Qiu felt distressed as well and looked earnestly at Auntie. "No matter what happens, Jiang Xue is my girlfriend. I will take good care of her."
Auntie's face showed derision as she looked down on Zhang Qiu. "Right, take good care of her—like how you took her to the hospital."
Zhang Qiu was at a loss for words; Auntie was not wrong. He kept saying he would take care of Jiang Xue, but in the end, Jiang Xue ended up in prison.
Zhang Zhi Hua furrowed his brows and said to Zhang Qiu, "Call your uncle and see if he has any good ideas to help Jiang Xue."
"What about his uncle? What kind of official is he?" Auntie perked up again, having just heard Zhang Zhi Hua mention her uncle's new position and nearly forgetting to ask this question. Now hearing Zhang Zhi Hua again, she hurriedly asked, her tears gone, her eyes fixed intently on Zhang Zhi Hua, like a wolf drooling over a flock of sheep.
Zhang Zhi Hua calmly looked at Auntie and replied, "Police Chief Wang Guodong."
"Ah! That's wonderful!" Auntie exclaimed, her expression brightening as if she had just won the lottery, nearly bursting into dance.
"Then you should call your uncle right away," Auntie's demeanor changed drastically, her previous aggressive tone suddenly softening: "Hurry and call Police Chief Wang Guodong. My goodness, that's a high-ranking official!"
He Mei chimed in eagerly, "Yes, yes, call our brother. He will definitely have a way to help."
Zhang Qiu was lost in thought, staring up at the ceiling when he saw his father pick up the phone to dial. He quickly waved his hand at Zhang Zhi Hua with a wry smile: "Dad, don't call. I already talked to my uncle about this; he doesn't have any solutions either."
"What kind of person is your uncle?" Zhang Zhi Hua asked Zhang Qiu.
Before Zhang Qiu could respond, Auntie resumed her previous stance, glaring fiercely at Zhang Qiu: "No way! How could he not have a way? Police Chief Wang Guodong is such a big official; how could he not be able to help? In my opinion, you just don't want to take responsibility. Ah! Poor Jiang Xue from our family; it's not worth it for her to go to prison because of you. It's just not worth it!"
Auntie began to cry and fuss again.
