Chapter Ten is Truly Foolish
Wang Jinghan sat on the back of the motorcycle, her arms wrapped tightly around Zhang Qiu's waist. The way back passed through the Red-Light District. The houses emitted ambiguous lights in shades of pink, red, blue, and purple. Women dressed provocatively sat on stools at the door, flirting with passing men. Some men openly circled around, while others squatted by the roadside, smoking cigarettes, with sporadic sparks flickering in the darkness.
After passing through the Red-Light District, they arrived directly at the site of the Old County Hospital. The old walls had been replaced by blue thin iron sheets, enclosing the area and preventing entry. The location of the Old County Hospital had now become a pile of ruins standing a full story high, with broken walls exposed to the air, telling tales of past sorrows.
The night was too dark to see clearly, and Wang Jinghan urged Zhang Qiu to leave. While waiting at a traffic light, Wang Jinghan suddenly asked, "That Rui Rui from the bar, are you close with her?"
"Close? Well, we’re colleagues and friends," Zhang Qiu replied, his mind involuntarily drifting to Rui Rui, who had been flirting with him. She was tall and curvy, wearing hot pants and a white shirt, sometimes donning a black round hat atop her golden wavy hair.
"Are you sure she’s not your girlfriend?"
"Of course not. My girlfriend is Jiang Xue; you know that."
Wang Jinghan didn’t respond directly but muttered absently, "I can feel your love for Jiang Xue, but you can't betray her."
"I understand." Zhang Qiu suddenly thought: could everyone see that Rui Rui was interested in him? Did he appear to have feelings for Rui Rui in others' eyes?
"Green light!"
Wang Jinghan reminded Zhang Qiu near his ear, snapping him out of his reverie. He twisted the throttle and sped down the deserted midnight road on the motorcycle. If one were to measure the speed, they would find it wasn’t actually fast; Zhang Qiu was just used to riding an electric vehicle and felt it was fast when he suddenly rode a motorcycle.
After dropping Wang Jinghan off at the county hospital entrance, Wang Jinghan waved goodbye. Zhang Qiu called out to her, asking, "You still haven't told me the answer to that question."
Wang Jinghan smiled and cupped her hands around her mouth to amplify her voice: "Because you are Zhang Qiu!" With that, she ran into the lobby.
Zhang Qiu reflected on this response and smiled as he rode away.
On his way back to White Day Fire, inside Blue Rose Entertainment City, Brother Tiger and a group of Brothers were laughing heartily in a private room. In the dimly lit room, there were dice and red wine on the table; the dark red wine in the goblet reflected purple light. Brother Tiger held a beautiful girl in a strapless short skirt in his arms, one hand kneading her thigh tightly wrapped in black stockings as he said with a smile: "Mao Tong, I’m very satisfied with how you handled this matter; you’re starting to use your brain—good job."
"Thank you for the compliment, Brother Tiger." Mao Tong beamed with joy, naturally believing this was praise from Brother Tiger; in reality, it truly was praise for him. Mao Tong had determination when working but often lacked cleverness; he was somewhat clumsy but lived up to his surname.
Mao Tong held a girl in his arms, one who was attractive and had a good figure, and importantly, she had received professional training, far better than the shabby goods from the Red-Light District. This time, Mao Tong achieved great success, perfectly completing the task assigned to him by Brother Tiger. Not only did he disturb White Day Fire, but he also shifted the conflict onto a wealthy second-generation heir who was foolish and rich. Naturally, this earned Mao Tong a reward, filling his pockets with cash, and Brother Tiger even specially rewarded him with a beautiful woman. While everyone was still drinking and celebrating, Mao Tong eagerly took the beauty's hand and bid farewell to Brother Tiger.
Brother Tiger shot a glare at Mao Tong and jokingly scolded him, "Hurry up and get lost! All you know is to work hard; you'll wear yourself out." After Brother Tiger finished speaking, only he laughed while the others suppressed their laughter. Mao Tong had become the favored one in Brother Tiger's eyes; at this moment, they were careful not to offend anyone thoughtlessly.
Mao Tong cheerfully led the beauty out of the private room and directly into an empty one next door. He closed the door and pushed the beauty onto the sofa. The beauty covered her mouth and giggled lightly as she playfully nudged Mao Tong, whispering sweetly in his ear, "You lie down; let me take care of it."
Mao Tong's eyes lit up instantly as he eagerly lay back on the sofa. The beauty sat up, tugged at her clothing, revealing her fair skin completely to the air. Mao Tong reached out his hands to caress her chest, causing her to gasp softly. The beauty unfastened Mao Tong's belt with a seductive smile and leaned down.
...
The next morning, a ray of sunlight streamed through the window as Zhang Qiu groggily opened his eyes. On the nearby sofa were Yang Yu and Rui Rui still asleep. Yang Yu lay flat on one sofa with an injured arm, shielded from the sunlight that couldn't reach his face. On another sofa, Rui Rui's sleeping position was quite amusing; she lay sprawled out with one leg draped over the backrest and one arm hanging down to the floor, her head tilted awkwardly with her golden hair cascading around her. Zhang Qiu instinctively felt that Rui Rui might suddenly fall off the sofa due to her odd position, yet she remained firmly fixed in place until she woke up.
"Awake?"
"Mm." Rui Rui replied drowsily while rubbing her tousled hair as she got up to head towards the bathroom. The office door was open, and the sound of running water reached Zhang Qiu's ears as he also stood up to go to the bathroom.
Rui Rui was combing her hair with droplets of water still on her face when she saw Zhang Qiu approaching. She smiled knowingly to herself, thinking that he wasn't such a fool after all.
Zhang Qiu ignored Rui Rui and walked straight to the sink. He turned on the faucet and splashed water on his face, finally feeling fully awake despite still having a heavy sensation in his mind. After a quick wash-up, he was about to leave when Rui Rui watched him with puffed cheeks and called out, "Hey, don't you have anything to say to me?"
"Ah?" Zhang Qiu paused for a moment. "Yes, yes! I do have something; I was just so groggy from sleep."
Rui Rui's smile returned as she leaned against the wall lightly and asked playfully, "What is it?"
"I'm going to investigate what happened last night shortly. When Yang Yu wakes up later, please tell him about it. You two will need to take care of things today."
Rui Rui's smile vanished instantly as she quickly stepped forward and pushed Zhang Qiu out of the bathroom before slamming the door shut behind him. Leaning against the door in frustration, she muttered, "What a fool."
Zhang Qiu looked at the closed door and couldn't help but laugh. Just as he was about to step away, the door opened again from inside, and Rui Rui stepped out looking unhappy. She asked, "Be careful! Do you want to take a few people with you?"
Zhang Qiu smiled lightly, "Don't worry, I'm going to the police station."
"What!" Rui Rui exclaimed in shock, hurriedly grabbing Zhang Qiu's arm, her hands still damp. "You can't go to the police station; that's a rule in our circle. If you call the police, we'll lose face."
"I'm not going to report anything; I'm just looking for someone."
"Looking for someone?"
"Yes."
"Will the police help you?"
"Of course, they serve the people."
"Cut it out." Rui Rui rolled her eyes at Zhang Qiu and asked again, "Is that for real?"
Zhang Qiu nodded seriously, "Really."
"Alright then, um, be careful."
"Okay."
Rui Rui escorted Zhang Qiu out of the bar. As they descended the stairs, the Brothers on the first floor all stood up to greet Zhang Qiu. The injured brothers from last night were especially attentive.
"Thanks for your hard work, Brothers."
Qiu Wan then noticed that the Brothers' gazes were quite unusual. Just as Zhang Qiu was puzzled, Rui Rui spoke up first, glaring and pointing at a few nearby brothers, shouting, "What are you staring at? Get back to what you were doing!"
"Got it, Sister Rui. We won't look anymore."
Brothers laughed as they left, glancing back a few times. Zhang Qiu looked at Rui Rui and finally understood what was going on. Early in the morning, he and Rui Rui had come down from the second floor together, and Rui Rui had half-combed hair that was a mess; no wonder Brothers were so curious. Zhang Qiu chuckled as he walked out of the bar, realizing that he still had the keys, so he hopped on his motorcycle.
"I'm leaving," Zhang Qiu called back to Rui Rui.
"Ride slowly," Rui Rui reminded him, waving goodbye to his retreating figure, but unfortunately, Zhang Qiu did not turn back to see her.
"Rui Jie, what's up? Are you interested in Brother Qiu?"
A long-time member of White Day Fire approached with a grin, joking with Rui Rui. She rolled her eyes at him and said angrily, "Go away." Then she stomped back to wash up.
Zhang Qiu had already made up his mind; since someone mentioned Lu Bin last night, he would start by investigating through Lu Bin. As a newcomer, he lacked both strength and skills for such inquiries. Fortunately, Zhang Qiu thought of an excellent solution.
Who could investigate better than the authorities? With this idea in mind, Zhang Qiu immediately set it into motion. Successfully completing this task would not only meet Biao Ge's expectations but also prove his capabilities. Directly asking his uncle would not work; given his uncle's style, he would not only refuse to help but might even investigate his own gang.
Aside from his uncle, the only police officers Zhang Qiu knew were Ma Zhen and Lan Ningshan. Asking Ma Zhen? No way. Whether or not he would help was another matter; even if he did assist him, he would report to his uncle. What about Lan Ningshan? Zhang Qiu felt that this interesting sister might help him, but he also sensed she might not. He truly found it hard to read this beautiful Police Sister.
Just then, a vivid image jumped into Zhang Qiu's mind. When he and his uncle went to pick up Jiang Xue, there was a police officer with an open jacket who climbed over the railing; he could definitely ask him for help. Zhang Qiu vaguely remembered that his name was probably Liu Hua. Yes, that should be it. This time, he would leverage his uncle's influence; since Liu Hua knew he was the nephew of Police Chief Wang Guodong, he would surely agree to help.
