Chapter 17: Kidnapping
Zhang Qiu and the others stayed at the mountain top until evening, watching the sunset in the distance as the afterglow painted half of the sky blue. The remaining tourists began to descend along the stone steps, and Zhang Qiu was no exception. Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, Zhao Pingchuan called for an Electric Tricycle and said to everyone, "Don't rush; tonight is the main event. A new ancient city has been built nearby, and I'll take you to see the night view."
Zhang Qiu smiled and said, "Great! We'll leave everything to you; we just want to have fun."
It was still two Electric Tricycles, but this time Zhang Qiu, Jiang Xue, and Liu Fangfei shared one. Rui Rui, feeling frustrated, wanted to squeeze in with them but reluctantly took the other tricycle when she saw there was no room. After Rui Rui left, Liu Fangfei teased, "That girl seems to like you, doesn't she?"
Zhang Qiu shrugged, feeling helpless. Liu Fangfei continued, "I'm curious how you all ended up hanging out together. Jiang Xue, aren't you jealous?"
"What's there to be jealous about? I believe in my charm and trust Zhang Qiu," Jiang Xue replied. Compared to two months ago, her maturity had significantly improved; her experiences had helped her let go of many things. The ups and downs she had gone through with Zhang Qiu made her believe in the depth and unbreakable nature of their relationship.
However, Jiang Xue sometimes thought about how many people who live a reckless life are surrounded by several women. Zhang Qiu seemed to be heading in that direction as well. Although he didn't act that way, the reality was evident. First, there was Wang Jinghan, whom Zhang Qiu had secretly liked since middle school; then there was Rui Rui, who persistently clung to him; and lastly, there was Liu Xinru with whom his relationship was ambiguous. Jiang Xue shook her head; she couldn't accept sharing her man with other women. Love is selfish; it doesn't allow for any division.
Zhang Qiu hugged Rui Rui and kissed her lightly, jokingly saying, "Sister, you don't mind me showing off my affection, do you?"
Liu Fangfei shook her head with a smile. "I don't mind at all; in fact, I'm quite envious of you both."
"Then you should hurry up and find someone too."
Liu Fangfei smiled without replying.
Zhang Qiu then chatted with Liu Fangfei about her job. Liu Fangfei said, "Once the holiday ends, I'll go directly to work in D City and continue in my old profession. The boss of a news agency in D City really appreciates my reporting from Youth Daily and plans to send me out for investigations. I'll be busy from now on."
Talking about her new job filled Liu Fangfei with excitement. Zhang Qiu asked innocently, "So you'll be able to go anywhere?"
"Of course! I can explore all the beautiful landscapes across our great country."
"That's wonderful." Zhang Qiu's eyes showed envy.
"Little brother," Liu Fangfei patted Zhang Qiu's shoulder seriously and said, "Study hard; you'll achieve more than your sister in the future."
The Tricycle Team arrived at Southern Luan Ancient City, accompanied not only by themselves but also by many tourists coming down from Yan Mountain to visit the ancient city. After sitting in the vehicle for over half an hour, their leg muscles had relaxed sufficiently, but stepping out again felt as heavy as dragging lead blocks. Rui Rui sighed, "Brother Qiu, let's take a break; I'm so tired."
"Alright, Zhao Pingchuan, find a place for us to rest."
"Brother Qiu, just ahead, in about a hundred meters, there's a riverbank with large stones to sit on." Zhao Pingchuan was very familiar with Southern Luan Ancient City and skillfully guided everyone toward the riverbank.
The scenery here was indeed beautiful; in the distance, the water shimmered, and nearby, the grass was lush and green. Young willows lined both sides of the riverbank, swaying gently in the breeze. Near some stone sculptures not far away, a waterwheel turned slowly, and the sound of flowing water cascaded down, creating a cheerful melody that reached everyone's ears. In the heat of the day, hearing such sounds felt incredibly refreshing.
"Brother Qiu, let's rest by the waterwheel; at this time, most people are in the ancient city, so it should be relatively quiet here."
"Is that alright, Rui Rui?" Zhang Qiu asked for the opinion of the most exhausted member, Rui Rui.
Rui Rui nodded eagerly and said, "That sounds great; I like it there."
No one expected that this choice would completely change their leisurely trip.
As Zhang Qiu and the others walked over, they heard a muffled sound coming from behind the stone sculptures, as if someone was whispering. Zhang Qiu looked around and recalled Zhao Pingchuan's remark about how 'few people come here,' suddenly realizing they might have stumbled upon something... unexpected.
"Why did you all stop?"
Zhao Pingchuan turned back to look at them, puzzled. They had been walking enthusiastically just moments ago; why were they suddenly frozen in place? He asked again, "Brother Qiu, what's wrong with you?"
At that moment, his question triggered an intense reaction from behind the stone sculpture. Zhang Qiu's expression changed instantly; something was off—this didn't sound like a romantic encounter! He quickly ran to one side of the stone sculpture and saw four Brute Men binding someone. The person's head was covered with a black cloth bag, and muffled whimpering sounds came from there.
"What are you doing!"
Zhang Qiu's shout was like thunder on a clear day; all four Brute Men turned their gazes toward the unexpected intruder. Two Brute Men held onto the struggling person on either side while the other two approached Zhang Qiu. One of them said, "Brother, this is none of your business; hurry up and leave!"
After Zhang Qiu ran over, the others followed him without understanding what was happening. Upon seeing the situation, they were all taken aback. What was going on? Was this a kidnapping? The leading Brute Man's eyes lit up upon seeing several beautiful women; Zhang Qiu noticed this gaze and immediately prepared himself for a fight.
"Brother, look at you with so many beautiful women. It's better to leave quickly. You must be here for fun too, and the most important thing in life is not to meddle in others' affairs. Otherwise, you'll end up suffering greatly." The Brute Man just wanted to finish things quickly without causing extra trouble. As if to prove a point, he punched the person tied up like a pretzel, causing that person to collapse immediately.
"Zhang Qiu, let's call the police quickly."
Coming from a civil servant family, Liu Fangfei was the first to think of calling the police. Zhang Qiu slowly said, "It's too late, Zhao Pingchuan!"
"Brother Qiu."
"Protect them well."
"Huh?"
Before Zhao Pingchuan could understand what was meant, Zhang Qiu had already moved, directly closing in on the Brute Man and landing a punch squarely on his face, catching him completely off guard. Zhang Qiu followed up with another punch to the man's throat. The Brute Man's eyes widened in anger as he clutched his throat and fell to the ground with a thud, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Zhang Qiu couldn't ignore the kidnapping situation. It was clear that the other side wouldn't easily let go of the person they had captured. No matter who this person was, even if they were irredeemable, there was still the law. Moreover, Zhang Qiu sensed that this was not just a simple kidnapping; he could only act decisively. There were four of them, but he believed he could handle it; his only concern was whether the women could take care of themselves. He had no choice but to end things quickly and catch them off guard.
Zhang Qiu's sudden attack indeed proved effective. When the first Brute Man fell, the other three hadn't reacted yet. Zhang Qiu quickly moved in front of the second man and threw a punch. The man raised his arms to block while simultaneously lifting his knee. Zhang Qiu hurriedly swiped down with his hand and jumped back to create some distance. This man was clearly trained.
The Brute Man pointed at Zhang Qiu and cursed, "Kid, why can't you just live your life? Why do you have to seek death?"
They had only come to carry out their older brother's orders and had been repeatedly instructed to find a place with fewer people and act discreetly, ideally without being noticed by anyone. They had successfully tricked someone into coming and tied them up, thinking their money was guaranteed when this young punk suddenly appeared and created trouble for them.
Zhang Qiu paid no attention to their insults; only those without skills would boast for a moment verbally. Zhang Qiu smiled and said, "Sorry, I can't stand seeing anyone being bullied. In such peaceful times, you are still engaging in kidnapping activities? How can I, a good young socialist, tolerate this!"
"Pah!" The Brute Man spat angrily and charged at Zhang Qiu. Snowfall shouted worriedly, "Heart!"
Zhang Qiu turned back with a smile before dodging aside and quickly closing in on the Brute Man again. He unleashed punches and kicks recklessly upon him without using any techniques or routines. A few minutes later, this Brute Man also collapsed to the ground. Zhang Qiu dusted off his hands and exhaled deeply. When it came to martial arts, speed was key; no matter how skilled you were, I won't follow your routine—I'll infuriate you!
Looking at the last two Brute Men, Zhang Qiu smirked and said, "You two, let him go and return where you came from."
A Brute Man pointed at Zhang Qiu and asked, "Who are you?"
"My name is Zhang Qiu, and I'm from Beilan County."
"Kid, we will remember you!"
The two Brute Men threw the person they were holding to the ground like a dead dog. One of them helped up a seriously injured brother and glared fiercely at Zhang Qiu, saying, "You better not run away!"
"Go to hell, I haven't even eaten yet."
Zhang Qiu cursed casually, leaving the Brute Man's face dark with anger but unable to do anything about it. There was nothing they could do if they couldn't win a fight. They had messed up and needed to report back to their boss quickly. Once out of Zhang Qiu's sight, the Brute Man immediately took out his phone to report, only to be met with a furious reprimand. Frustrated and with no outlet for his anger, he stomped his foot hard and muttered under his breath while looking in Zhang Qiu's direction, "Just wait, you'll get what's coming to you!"
When Zhang Qiu made his move, the Three Girls were all worried for him. Now that they saw him drive off four Brute Men, they rushed over to check if he was hurt. Zhang Qiu smiled and moved his legs, saying, "See? I'm perfectly fine!"
Zhang Qiu walked over to the person who had been kidnapped. Zhao Pingchuan cautiously placed his hand on the man's neck and felt relieved when he realized he was still alive. "Brother Qiu, he's alive."
Zhang Qiu nodded and squatted down to pull off the mask from the man's head, instantly widening his eyes in shock. The kidnapped person was actually Song Weidong!
