After Wang Baoguo left, Zhang Qiu said to Wang Jinghan, "Please call Dr. Li for me."
Wang Jinghan looked at Zhang Qiu nervously and asked, "Are you feeling unwell?"
"No, I have something to discuss with Dr. Li."
"I see, you want to be discharged!"
Wang Jinghan saw through Zhang Qiu's thoughts at a glance. Zhang Qiu smiled shyly and said, "That's right, I do want to be discharged. I'm already better."
"But if you get discharged, you'll just end up at the police station. That place is nowhere near as good as here. Jiang Xue and I can take care of you anytime."
"It's true that I'm going to the police station, but I'm not going there to serve time." Zhang Qiu smiled mysteriously. Wang Jinghan and Jiang Xue exchanged puzzled glances.
Zhang Qiu explained in a low voice, "I received a phone call, a call that can save me. From what I gathered about the caller, I’m sure that both Rui Rui and I will be safe. That's why I just told the police everything like pouring beans from a bamboo tube. If I'm fine later, Chen Huma will be the one in trouble over there. Since there's an opportunity, I might as well use it to my advantage."
"Really? That's fantastic!"
Jiang Xue was overjoyed by this news; nothing could be better than knowing that Zhang Qiu would be safe. However, Wang Jinghan frowned with concern. Her years of social experience told her that things were never this simple. Wang Jinghan asked anxiously, "What do they want in return?"
"They want my blood."
As soon as Zhang Qiu said this, both Jiang Xue and Wang Jinghan expressed their opposition. Zhang Qiu hurriedly explained that it was just two vials of blood and wouldn't be more than what an adult would donate.
With Wang Jinghan's reminder, Jiang Xue shifted from excitement to worry and said, "Are they reliable? Don't let them trick you again."
"Don't worry; they value my recovery ability and won't easily harm me. Besides," Zhang Qiu raised his hand and gently touched Jiang Xue's rosy white cheek, saying softly, "Only by doing this can I gain my freedom and stay with you. We can take the college entrance exam together and go to university together."
"But your injury..."
"Don't worry." Zhang Qiu stretched a bit and turned back, saying, "Jinghan, could you please go find Dr. Li? Rui Rui is still locked up."
"Okay, I'll help you. But if Dr. Li doesn't agree, you can't leave," Wang Jinghan said, looking at Zhang Qiu. If he disagreed, she would not help him find Dr. Li.
"Alright, I promise you." For now, Zhang Qiu could only agree to Wang Jinghan and plan the next steps after seeing Dr. Li.
Dr. Li rushed over, his open white coat billowing behind him. Despite his graying hair, he walked briskly.
"Zhang Qiu, are you going to be discharged again?"
Dr. Li got straight to the point, his calm eyes assessing Zhang Qiu behind his glasses. He was aware of Zhang Qiu's situation and knew that his old classmate had contacted him. But was Zhang Qiu really in a condition to be discharged?
"That's right, I want to be discharged, Dr. Li. Please check me."
"Okay." Dr. Li stepped forward and began to unwrap the bandages on Zhang Qiu's body. The wounds were exposed like centipedes crawling on him. The medication around the wounds had reddened and bruised his skin, while the pristine white tiger lay quietly among the scars. Dr. Li frowned as he examined him and finally said, "Your recovery ability is indeed remarkable."
"So that's why you're interested in my blood?"
"Exactly, what!"
Dr. Li suddenly snapped back to reality but it was too late; his previous response had already revealed too much. And judging by Zhang Qiu's expression, he clearly knew it was him. Did his old classmate find out? Or did he guess it himself?
Zhang Qiu had already figured out the answer from Dr. Li's expression. Ever since he received that mysterious phone call, he had begun to suspect Dr. Li. Only five people knew about his rapid recovery ability, including himself. Jiang Xue and Wang Jinghan would never betray him; Dr. Li on the first floor treating external injuries wouldn’t know about his hospitalization either. The answer was clear: it was the other Dr. Li who had rushed over after hearing the news and had performed surgery on him who leaked his information. Most importantly, hadn't he always been interested in Zhang Qiu's recovery ability?
Zhang Qiu smiled slightly and said, "Dr. Li, we're both smart people, so I'll be straightforward with you. Your friend contacted me, and I agreed to them. So now I want to be discharged; I have things to do, so don't stop me."
"Alright, I'll handle your discharge paperwork." Dr. Li readily agreed, beads of sweat already forming on his forehead. He knew what those four big guys at the door were there for; he genuinely feared that knowing the truth would lead Zhang Qiu to tear him apart. Fortunately, he didn't; he just wanted to leave.
"Dr. Li!" Wang Jinghan interjected, chasing after him and asking, "With his current injuries, can he really be discharged?"
"Sure, after you go out, make sure to rest well and pay attention to your diet. Your friend's recovery ability is quite strong, and the wound is not serious." Once again mentioning the recovery ability, Dr. Li felt a bit awkward and quickly left after giving a few reminders.
Wang Jinghan returned to the bedside and asked Zhang Qiu, "What did you mean by what you said to Dr. Li just now?"
"The person who called me is connected with Dr. Li; they are both interested in my recovery ability."
Wang Jinghan looked at the empty doorway and suddenly felt a sense of wanting to escape. Could it be that the doctor who saves lives has another identity?
Dr. Li returned with a stack of documents, walked directly to the bedside, and handed them to Zhang Qiu, saying, "It's all set. Make sure to rest and keep your diet light. Of course, you can eat some meat for nourishment, but avoid anything that could cause issues."
"I understand," Zhang Qiu replied, staring at Dr. Li before finally saying thank you.
Dr. Li left, and the police officer on duty came in. Upon entering, he directly addressed Liu Hua, "It's our turn to take over; you can head back to the station."
"Um," Liu Hua asked, "Is there anything from the leadership?"
"Make sure to keep a close watch; there must be no mistakes."
Liu Hua wanted to ask something else but held back. He glanced at Zhang Qiu and said, "Goodbye."
"Goodbye!"
After Liu Hua left, Zhang Qiu, Jiang Xue, and Wang Jinghan began packing up. Jiang Xue helped Zhang Qiu while Wang Jinghan also pitched in. Zhang Qiu was still wearing ill-fitting clothes when Wang Jinghan said, "You can take this outfit with you; it's been sitting in my closet anyway and is new. I found it by chance while looking for something else a few days ago; otherwise, I would have forgotten about it."
"Okay."
Zhang Qiu didn't hesitate to accept it but wondered why there was a man's clothing in Wang Jinghan's closet that had been kept there all along and was still brand new.
"What are you two planning to do?"
The on-duty police officer stepped forward to stop Zhang Qiu, who was dressed neatly. Beside him, Jiang Xue was holding a large plastic bag filled with daily necessities, clearly indicating that he was about to be discharged from the hospital.
"I'm leaving the hospital," Zhang Qiu said to the police officer, holding up the discharge papers.
The officer frowned slightly and replied, "Since you're being discharged, you need to come with us to the station."
Jiang Xue and Wang Jinghan were about to explain when Zhang Qiu interrupted, saying, "It's fine, I'll go for a trip and catch a ride."
Jiang Xue and Wang Jinghan exchanged glances, thinking how could anyone take advantage like this, catching a ride in a police car. In fact, Zhang Qiu had his own concerns; he was worried that Bai Jingwei hadn't resolved the situation yet and that he might end up in a big mess, becoming a laughingstock.
Thus, with Zhang Qiu in front and two upright police officers flanking him on either side, Jiang Xue and Wang Jinghan closely followed behind. The officers thought it was strange; usually, people who had committed crimes would want to stay in the hospital as long as possible, but here was someone who seemed eager to return to the station.
The police car stopped at the parking spot closest to the main entrance, where a row of security guards stood to ensure smooth passage. A taxi had just pulled up to pick up passengers leaving the hospital, and two security guards were approaching to urge it to leave. Zhang Qiu walked straight to the police car, which was a Wuling Van with iron bars welded on the windows. If he weren't confident that he was fine, he really wouldn't want to get into such a vehicle.
Once Zhang Qiu sat inside, the officer locked the door. Jiang Xue exclaimed, "I haven't gotten in yet!"
The officer turned back and asked, "Are you also a suspect?"
Wang Jinghan quickly interjected for Jiang Xue, "She isn't! She isn't!"
"But I need to give a statement," Jiang Xue insisted. "I'm the victim."
The two officers exchanged glances before one of them asked, "What's your name?"
Jiang Xue replied, "My name is Jiang Xue."
The two officers moved to the front of the car and whispered to each other, "Have you heard this name before?"
"No, I can't recall any case by that name."
The police officer nodded and said seriously, "We don't know about this case."
Jiang Xue looked at Zhang Qiu, who was just a door away from her, and panicked, shouting, "It's true! Call your station, call Lan Ningshan, she must know!"
The two police officers exchanged glances again, and one of them opened the car door and said, "Get in."
Jiang Xue quickly jumped in and sat beside Zhang Qiu, hugging him tightly. The car door closed again, and they heard Wang Jinghan's voice wishing them safety. The car started, and Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue waved goodbye to Wang Jinghan through the glass window. Gradually, the car turned out of the hospital, and they could no longer see that pink figure.
The police officer in the passenger seat glanced at Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue hugging in the back seat through the rearview mirror. He frowned and turned around, saying, "You two, let go! This is a police car, not a place for you to flirt. Sit properly and behave." He then addressed Jiang Xue specifically, "Aren't you the victim? Why are you hugging the suspect?"
Jiang Xue pouted and replied, "It's not the same case."
"Whether it's the same case or not, it doesn't matter what your relationship is. Here, you have to listen to us. If we tell you to sit properly, then sit properly. If you keep hugging like that, we'll take measures!"
Zhang Qiu looked coldly at the chattering police officer and created some distance between himself and Jiang Xue. There are times when one must endure; after all the storms they've weathered, they couldn't afford to stir up more trouble now in this precarious situation.
