Zhang Qiu watched as his blood flowed through the IV tube into the collection bottle, while Bai Jingwei beside him showed an excited expression. The pretty nurse drew two bottles skillfully, pulled out the needle, and placed it on the tray, using an alcohol swab to apply pressure to Zhang Qiu's wound.
Bai Jingwei could hardly contain himself as he stood up and walked over to Zhang Qiu, carefully picking up the bottle of Zhang Qiu's blood and holding it up in the air, concentrating intently on it. Zhang Qiu asked, "Can you tell anything from this?"
"No, no, we have to wait for the test results," Bai Jingwei suppressed his excitement, placing the collection bottle back on the tray. He said to Zhang Qiu, "You need to rest after giving blood. I’ve prepared a lounge and some high-calorie food for you. Come with me."
"I don't need the lounge," Zhang Qiu replied, not feeling uncomfortable at all. "Just hurry up with the tests; I'll wait for the results. As for food, I could go for a bit."
"Alright, follow me."
Bai Jingwei led the way, bringing Zhang Qiu to a spacious hall. He pressed a Purple Button on the wall, and a table extended from it, followed by a chair that slowly rose to match the height of the table. Bai Jingwei smiled and said, "Please sit down; I'll have someone bring your food shortly. Do you prefer Chinese or Western cuisine?"
As a seasoned foodie, Zhang Qiu countered with a question: "What’s the best or most unique dish you have here?"
Bai Jingwei thought for a moment and replied, "It’s probably Western cuisine; we have a Michelin chef preparing it."
"Then let's go with Western." In truth, Zhang Qiu had no idea what Michelin was.
Moments later, an array of sumptuous dishes was served: Plum Vegetable Flavor Ice Cream, French Grade A Foie Gras, Imported American Green Apple, Nordic Seafood Chowder...
After introducing the dishes to Zhang Qiu, Bai Jingwei took out some cash from his pocket to pay and then left Zhang Qiu alone to eat while he went to personally oversee the blood testing process.
After Zhang Qiu finished his meal, Bai Jingwei still had not returned. He couldn't help but notice that these dishes were indeed exceptional. When Bai Jingwei finally came back, Zhang Qiu could clearly see the disappointment on his face. Sure enough, before Zhang Qiu could ask about the results, Bai Jingwei directly stated, "Your blood is normal."
Zhang Qiu nodded; this was within his expectations. Since it wasn't due to his blood, it must be related to the White Tiger. However, Zhang Qiu wouldn't reveal this matter to Bai Jingwei. From their demeanor, if he were to leave, they would surely find ways to obtain the White Tiger; who knew what underhanded methods they might resort to.
"My thought is to conduct a comprehensive and systematic examination of you."
"But our deal was just for blood collection, right? In other words, I'm selling my blood for freedom, although I don't know what you want my blood for."
"We are interested in your rapid recovery ability. I think you would also want to understand the secrets within yourself, right?"
"No, I don't."
Zhang Qiu did not want to become a guinea pig. A comprehensive system check would reveal that everything about him was normal, which would eliminate the mystery. It was better to keep things as they were, leaving them puzzled.
Bai Jingwei was not giving up and said, "It's just like a hospital check-up; it's essentially a free physical examination for you."
"Dr. Bai," Zhang Qiu adopted this title as well, "If there is an opportunity, I believe the secrets within me will eventually be revealed, but not now."
"Oh?" Bai Jingwei became interested. "So, do you know the secrets within you?"
"Perhaps I do."
"I've been through this before; maybe we could become friends. That's all for today. I'll have someone take you back. If there's a chance in the future, we can get in touch again."
Bai Jingwei handed Zhang Qiu an exquisite business card. Zhang Qiu took it and saw the embossed golden letters stating Professor Bai Jingwei, Capital Anthropology Research Center. Zhang Qiu smiled; the less information on a business card, the more it proved its owner's prowess. Just like Mark Zuckerberg, who only needed to write "Founder of Facebook" on his card. Unlike some people in society who have a long list of titles on their cards but lack any real accomplishments.
The person responsible for taking Zhang Qiu away was still K, and the driver was the same young man who had escaped earlier. Seeing that he had not been caught gave Zhang Qiu some relief; it would not be good if he got someone imprisoned because of his troubles.
Bai Jingwei stood on the balcony of the fourth floor, watching the Buick business car that Zhang Qiu was in leave. There was no use in rushing regarding the secrets Zhang Qiu held; Bai Jingwei had already thought of a better way to get him to cooperate. This blood draw was part of the deal with Zhang Qiu; given what he was involved in, he would inevitably encounter situations he couldn't handle. At that time, they could engage in another transaction. In critical moments, some problems could even be artificially created to force Zhang Qiu to seek him out.
Bai Jingwei smiled sinisterly at this thought. He was already over seventy years old; if he could truly find the secret to longevity from this young man, he wouldn't trade it for a mountain of gold. Of course, Bai Jingwei understood that immortality was an unrealistic fantasy, but improving bodily functions was not. It seemed that Zhang Qiu held these secrets within him. This was his mission and also the original intention behind establishing the Research Center. As some of the older colleagues aged, who wouldn't want to live longer and enjoy more of the wonderful benefits that power brings? If he really figured it out, no matter how much fighting occurred above him, he would become a safe fortress amidst disaster, unshakeable by anyone.
In the Buick business car, Zhang Qiu tapped on the glass, making a knocking sound. K turned around and asked, "What are you doing?"
"Is this car bulletproof?"
"Bulletproof, but I don't think there's any danger."
"You're so confident?"
"I'm full of confidence in myself."
"You were just like this last time."
K dismissed Zhang Qiu's teasing, but soon realized he was wrong. The driver suddenly reported, "Captain, we've been targeted again."
Zhang Qiu jolted and got up to look through the rear window. Sure enough, two black Jeeps were closely following them. K's expression changed as well; he had just been feeling confident, and now this scene was a slap in the face. What frustrated him even more was that these people kept opposing him, yet he had no idea who they were.
"Let's hurry and shake them off," Zhang Qiu shouted before fastening his seatbelt. He didn't want to experience another collision inside the vehicle.
Qiu Wan, the driver, remained indifferent, his gaze focused on the road ahead and occasionally glancing at K. K furrowed his brows in thought and suddenly said, "Stop the car!"
"What?" Zhang Qiu yelled.
No need for K to respond, as the driver had already slammed on the brakes. There were no parking spots nearby, so K stopped the car right in the middle of the road. The two Jeeps behind them also came to a halt. The drivers stuck behind honked angrily, unable to wait any longer, and quickly swerved into an adjacent lane.
"Keep the engine running and don't turn it off," K turned back to Zhang Qiu and said, "You too, stay in the car and don't get out."
"Why should I!"
Qiu Wan, K had already gotten out of the car, along with a young man sitting in the back seat. Zhang Qiu looked out of the rear window and saw eight people getting out of the two Jeeps, all walking towards the front of the first Jeep. K and the young man appeared somewhat thin standing before them. Although K told Zhang Qiu not to get out of the car, Zhang Qiu still pushed open the door and stepped outside. By the time the driver tried to stop him, it was already too late.
K watched as Zhang Qiu walked up beside him, his expression extremely displeased. He shouted, "Who told you to get out?"
Zhang Qiu did not like K's condescending attitude and replied directly, "My legs are my own; I can go wherever I want without your concern."
"But I have to protect you!"
"I don't need your protection!"
"You..."
"Alright, alright, are you two done?" The person in front of the Jeep couldn't stand it any longer.
Zhang Qiu looked at the speaker, who was wearing a black hat and a long-sleeved shirt despite the heat. His belly protruded, and there were large sweat stains on his light-colored shirt. Zhang Qiu asked, "Who are you, and why are you following me? Was that car earlier yours too?"
"You may be young, but you have quite a few problems. Yes, that car was indeed ours. We had no grievances between us until you came along and got our own brother arrested by the police, so now we have a score to settle!"
"What a joke!" Zhang Qiu scoffed at his reasoning. "If your people hadn't been chasing me, I wouldn't have ended up in this situation."
"That's not how it is. We were just looking to talk to you; we never intended to harm you. You were the one who ran away."
"And that's your excuse for chasing me down the street?"
"Enough with the nonsense," K interrupted Zhang Qiu. "Who are you people?"
"That's none of your business; we don't need to report who we are to you!"
"Then there's nothing more to discuss. Zhang Qiu, get in the car!"
"You're not going anywhere!"
Zhang Qiu looked at the leader of the group and said, "What, are we not allowed to leave?"
"The person can go, but the jade pendant must stay."
"What jade pendant?"
"Don't play dumb. You know what the jade pendant is. What is that around your neck?"
"Is this what you mean?"
Zhang Qiu grabbed the red string around his neck and slowly pulled out a rectangular amulet with a protective casing. This amulet was given to him by Gao Zhi after he joined the Hall Society. This time, Zhang Qiu didn't want Bai Jingwei to see the White Tiger, so he wore the amulet instead, not expecting that someone would actually be after the White Tiger. Even more puzzling was who these people were and how they knew about the existence of the White Tiger. Everything felt like a huge question mark lingering in Zhang Qiu's mind.
After seeing the amulet in Zhang Qiu's hand, the leader snorted coldly and directly ordered, "Let's go."
The eight burly men got into their vehicles, revved the engines, and drove off to a side road. The driver glanced meaningfully at Zhang Qiu and said, "Get in; I'll take you to the station."
"Okay."
Zhang Qiu calmly got into the car. This time, no one rushed out to follow him, but his mind was even more complicated than when he was being followed. Who were these people who suddenly appeared and tracked him?
