One of the benefits of taking a taxi is that you can get off anywhere without being restricted to a station. Zhang Qiu had the driver drop him off right at the entrance of the school. As the driver collected the fare, he casually asked, "What grade are you in?"
"Senior Three."
"Senior Three? The college entrance exam is coming up soon, huh?" The driver's eyes showed a hint of surprise.
"Yeah," Zhang Qiu took a deep breath, "the exam is just around the corner."
At that moment, the driver received a phone call, and Zhang Qiu grabbed his bag and left. The school gate was only wide enough for one person to pass through. Under the eaves of the security booth, a bulb glowed brightly, and a row of chairs lined the wall where the guards sat chatting and enjoying the breeze. One guard recognized Zhang Qiu as he walked by and asked as he entered, "Do you need a leave slip?"
"No need, I didn't leave from school."
When Zhang Qiu entered the classroom, there was no teacher present, and his classmates were quietly doing their own things. Upon seeing Zhang Qiu return, Gao Zhi, Wang Zhengxiang, Zhao Pingchuan, and others all stood up. The sound of moving chairs startled most of the students, and the previously quiet classroom erupted into noise. Suddenly, it became so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Just as Zhang Qiu was puzzled by this drastic change in atmosphere, a cold voice came from behind him.
"Zhang Qiu, what are you doing standing there?"
"Teacher, I'm back for class," Zhang Qiu turned to face Zhao Guohong.
"Weren't you on leave?"
"I finished my business and thought I should come back to review."
"Review is fine, but don't make the class chaotic," Zhao Guohong said as he handed Zhang Qiu a stack of papers. "Distribute these; you can find a few more people to help."
Before Zhang Qiu could find anyone, someone had already stepped up to assist him. Jiang Xue was the first to run over to Zhang Qiu, taking a stack of papers from his hands and softly asking, "How did it go? Are you okay?"
"What happened today could fill a book; I'll tell you all about it after class."
Zhao Guohong shot a glare at Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue. It was inappropriate for them to be so close in front of the teacher. Zhao Guohong shouted, "Zhang Qiu, Jiang Xue, what are you two doing?"
Amidst laughter, Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue quickly dispersed. Zhao Guohong continued to maintain order: "What are you all doing? Just sitting around with nothing to do? Do you want me to assign homework? Look at your scores; how can you still be in the mood to laugh? The college entrance exam is coming up soon; focus!"
As soon as Zhao Guohong spoke, the students immediately quieted down. Zhang Qiu's brothers helped him distribute the papers quickly. Sitting at his desk, Zhang Qiu looked at Wang Zhengxiang, who scored eighty-eight on the history exam, and asked, "Did we take this today? I feel like I haven't done it."
"It doesn't matter if you haven't done it," Wang Zhengxiang said with a mischievous grin as he pulled a paper out from Zhang Qiu's desk. "Here, it's not too late to do it now. I'll collect it for you."
Zhang Qiu looked at Wang Zhengxiang and sighed, "You really are my good brother."
After class, Jiang Xue walked over, and Zhao Pingchuan and Gao Zhi gathered around. They all knew what Zhang Qiu had done and asked, "Brother Qiu, tell us quickly, how did it go?"
"The result is already clear; why don't you guess first?"
Zhao Pingchuan was the first to respond: "Brother Qiu, it must be the White Tiger, right?"
Zhang Qiu then asked the others, "What do you think?"
"The White Tiger."
Jiang Xue, Gao Zhi, and Wang Zhengxiang all guessed it was the White Tiger. Zhang Qiu laughed and remarked, "It's something you all could guess, yet that professor couldn't understand."
"So it's because of the White Tiger then?"
Zhang Qiu looked at Jiang Xue and said, "That's right."
"Do they know it's the White Tiger?"
"They don't know; only you few are aware of the White Tiger's situation."
"Before class, you told me that what happened today could fill a book. Since they know nothing, how could there be so many issues?"
"They don't know, but someone does."
At this point, Zhang Qiu recalled the thrilling and intense stories that had unfolded today—car chases, SWAT gunfire, and being followed. He started from when he first arrived in the capital and recounted everything up to the moment he managed to shake off his pursuers after a tire blowout in the city. When he finished, he noticed the expressions on Jiang Xue, Gao Zhi, Wang Zhengxiang, and Zhao Pingchuan's faces were remarkably uniform.
"Are you hurt?"
Jiang Xue anxiously pulled Wang Zhengxiang aside, and he wisely made way for her. Jiang Xue immediately sat next to Zhang Qiu, checking him thoroughly for any injuries. Only when she saw that Zhang Qiu had no new wounds did she feel relieved.
Zhao Pingchuan asked, "Brother Qiu, do you know who they are?"
"Not at all."
"I think they will come back."
"I think so too," Zhang Qiu agreed with Zhao Pingchuan's speculation. "Since they were able to follow me all the way to the city, they will definitely come to Beilan County to find me."
Gao Zhi exclaimed, "Then Brother Qiu is in danger!"
"Shh, quiet down."
Gao Zhi's shout nearly drew the attention of everyone in the class toward Zhang Qiu.
"Don't worry; I will be safe for now. I'm more concerned about you all."
Seeing that they didn't understand his meaning, Zhang Qiu further explained, "Their goal is to obtain the White Tiger. Regardless of who they are or what their purpose is for wanting the White Tiger, as long as they can't find it, they won't be able to harm me. If something happens to me, then they definitely won't find the White Tiger."
"You all are different. As long as they investigate a little, they can easily find out that you are the ones closest to me. I'm afraid they might use you to threaten me." Zhang Qiu looked at Jiang Xue and took her hand. "Especially you; I'm most worried about you. If Lu Bin thought of using you to get back at me, these people would also think of using you to threaten me."
"I'm not afraid." Jiang Xue shook her head firmly, but her slightly trembling hand betrayed her; the shadow left by Lu Bin's kidnapping still lingered in her heart.
"What I'm saying is just a possibility; we need to stay vigilant during this time. I will protect Jiang Xue well. You all should avoid acting alone. There are plenty of brothers in White Day Fire; each of you should bring two people or gather those you know from school. As the older brother, I need to act like one."
Gao Zhi, Zhao Pingchuan, and Wang Zhengxiang all agreed deeply, feeling a chill at Zhang Qiu's experience. Being shot at by SWAT and chased, if it weren't for the bulletproof car, they might never have seen Zhang Qiu again. They had always known that coming out to mix with the world would be dangerous, but they never imagined that danger could be so close. Today, each of them felt this reality keenly.
After school in the evening, Zhao Pingchuan and Gao Zhi were still alone, while three students had already followed Wang Zhengxiang. After greeting Zhang Qiu, they left together. Zhang Qiu stopped Zhao Pingchuan and Gao Zhi, asking, "Where are your people?"
"Brother Qiu, I’m too lazy to have a bunch of people following me. You know I’m used to being free."
Zhang Qiu looked at the unwilling Gao Zhi and advised, "The heavier the burden, the greater the responsibility. Sometimes, those hundred-plus pounds aren't just yours. Think about your family, think about your brothers, think about the dozens of people who follow you."
"Alright, Brother Qiu, I understand."
Zhang Qiu then asked Zhao Pingchuan, "What about you?"
Zhao Pingchuan pulled a dagger from his bag and smiled, "Better to rely on myself."
Zhang Qiu exclaimed in surprise at the dagger in Zhao Pingchuan's hand, "Where did you buy this dagger?"
"At the train station."
"City Train Station?"
"No, Nanlan County Train Station."
"How much did it cost?"
"One hundred bucks."
"You paid too much." Zhang Qiu said as he pulled out an identical dagger from his own bag and placed it on the table.
"Damn, Brother Qiu, you have one too!" Zhao Pingchuan exclaimed in surprise at Zhang Qiu's dagger. "How much did yours cost?"
“Seventieth.”
“Where did you buy it?”
“At the City Train Station.”
“Hey, it’s all train stations. I got scammed.”
Zhao Pingchuan looked frustrated, and Zhang Qiu comforted him, saying, “Forget it, forget it. What does it matter? If you like it, it's worth it.”
Zhang Qiu and Zhao Pingchuan each put away their daggers and walked to the school gate to part ways. Jiang Xue asked, “Are you going back to White Day Fire? Do Yang Yu and Rui Rui know you’re back?”
“I’ll go over at Noon. I called them after I returned.”
Jiang Xue nodded and hugged Zhang Qiu from behind as Zhang Qiu rode his Electric Vehicle into the flow of traffic heading home. Passing by the Red-Light District, Zhang Qiu noticed the house of the Black Stocking Woman lit up with pink lights, and a middle-aged man in a white tank top was walking out.
Jiang Xue also saw this scene and sighed, “Why doesn’t she want to go to White Day Fire?”
“Maybe she has her reasons, or maybe she has really fallen. Who knows?”
“It’s hard to understand.”
“Well, if you can’t understand, then just respect it. It’s her freedom to choose; we shouldn’t interfere.”
“You wouldn’t feel this way just because she’s Liu Xinru’s sister, would you?”
“Oh no, you actually guessed it.” Zhang Qiu knew Jiang Xue was joking with him, so he played along.
“Hmph, how could you!”
"Hey, don't pinch me, it's dangerous, dangerous!"
After some playful antics, Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue returned home. Every time the two of them came back, the lights in their parents' room were always off. Zhang Qiu felt grateful for his parents' kindness from the bottom of his heart. Jiang Xue was unaware, but Zhang Qiu knew very well that before Jiang Xue moved in, his parents always waited for him to come home before turning off the lights to rest.
"Let's take a shower together," Zhang Qiu suggested.
"Okay," Jiang Xue nodded lightly.
Zhang Qiu picked Jiang Xue up in a princess carry and brought her into the bathroom. The shower was turned on, and hot water gushed out, quickly filling the entire bathroom with steam. Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue had already removed their clothes, standing under the shower with Zhang Qiu holding Jiang Xue tightly. Water droplets adorned Jiang Xue's flushed cheeks, making her look like a blooming lotus emerging from the water.
"Xue'er," Zhang Qiu whispered softly in Jiang Xue's ear.
"Mm?"
"I want you."
"Alright."
The bathroom was enveloped in an orange glow, and amidst the rising steam, Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue reached their peaks time and again before slowly coming down. Eventually, both of them were left breathless. With a dazed look in her eyes, Jiang Xue exhaled gently by Zhang Qiu's ear. He held her close and smiled, "Let's go back to the room."
Jiang Xue nodded lightly. Zhang Qiu grabbed a cream-colored bath towel and wrapped it around Jiang Xue's fair body before carrying her back to the room. After another round of passion, they finally fell into a deep sleep.
