They exchanged pleasantries before getting straight to the point, as their relationship had never been particularly close.
"What brings you here, Father?" For some reason, Baike chose to conceal the fact that the Five Elders had come earlier and only asked about Bai Zhan's purpose.
Bai Zhan did not find it strange. He looked around to ensure no one was listening before saying, "Do you know that my long-held wish is finally about to be fulfilled?" His voice was filled with excitement; after all, this was the first time he could share his impending success with someone. It was a feeling hard to describe, especially when facing his daughter—an unprecedented sense of pride and joy.
At that moment, Bai Zhan seemed to transform into a chatty old man, speaking non-stop: "That Alien Manifestation incident with you..."
"When did you arrive at the Capital of the Departed Nation?" Baike knew well what her father's long-held wish was; the eagerness in his eyes made that clear. But why now?
Baike couldn't understand. She had first been unconscious and then woke up to find herself under house arrest. Moreover, the elders who never left the Bai Clan had appeared at Leaving the Royal Palace, and evidently, they must have brought her here. As for her father...
Bai Zhan was still immersed in joy when he suddenly heard Baike's question. He casually replied, "I heard that you were controlled by those old men... Oh, I heard you had been unconscious since coming out of the Millennium Ruins. I rushed here out of concern for your safety."
Baike remained silent, simply watching Bai Zhan.
"Ah, I have arrived a step too late. Who would have thought those old men left Bai Clan for Capital of the Departed Nation? I thought they were just taking a stroll near Dream Nation. Because of this, they seized the opportunity." Bai Zhan felt uncomfortable under Baike's gaze. Knowing he couldn't hide anything from his clever daughter, he decided to explain half-truths. He then smiled and said, "Don't worry, now that I am here, they can no longer trap you. Come, let's leave the palace together."
With that, Bai Zhan took Baike's hand and attempted to walk out, but to his surprise, Baike stood still. When he pulled and failed to move her, he turned back in astonishment and asked, "Why aren't you coming?"
Baike shook her head and said, "Father, this is Leaving the Royal Palace. Do you think we can just leave whenever we want?"
"You are my daughter. How can I not take you with me?" Upon hearing this, Bai Zhan became angry. He had been so happy to see Baike, thinking that as long as he brought her back, his position as clan leader and her status as the Legitimate Daughter would be secure. But hearing her words felt like a bucket of cold water poured over him.
"I refuse to believe there are no laws here. I..."
"What does Elder Bai intend to do?"
Suddenly, the voice of Li Feng drifted over. He emerged from behind a nearby rockery, smiling at Bai Zhan, showing no concern about his presence being inappropriate.
"And you are?" Bai Zhan, having never seen Li Feng, looked at him in disdain upon noticing his attire as an inner servant. He scoffed, "What business is it of yours..."
"Father!" Baike immediately shouted over him with a reproachful look, then turned to Li Feng and slightly bowed, saying, "Lord Li, please don't take offense; my father has not met you before, so..."
"He is just a..."
"Father!" Baike felt a headache coming on. Why was her father so oblivious to social cues? At this moment, someone who could appear in the garden and directly interrupt their conversation should not be treated with such disrespect.
Bai Zhan, startled by Baike's sharp tone, realized that his daughter was usually calm and proud; she had never behaved so rudely in front of outsiders. It dawned on him that within the confines of Leaving the Royal Palace, he could not act as he pleased. Reluctantly, he cupped his hands toward Li Feng and said, "My apologies, sir."
Under the sunset's glow, Li Feng's fair face appeared slightly flushed. With a harmless smile on his face and seeing Bai Zhan bowing to him without evasion, he casually approached and said, "Elder Bai, are you planning to take Miss Bai away?"
"Indeed," replied Bai Zhan, puffing out his chest. Although he had just backed down, he did not want to lose face against an inner servant now.
"This might not be appropriate," Li Feng said with a smile, glancing at Bai Zhan and then at Baike. "Miss Bai has just awakened; it would be better for her to rest in the palace."
"No need for that. It's best for my daughter to stay with me," Bai Zhan replied, finally able to see Baike again. There was no way he would let her leave his sight, and his refusal came naturally.
"Well, I'm afraid it's not entirely up to you," Li Feng straightened his back and looked at Baike. "Miss Bai, what do you think?"
At that moment, Bai Zhan realized that this eunuch was actually taller than him; he had just been bending over before. Although Li Feng was not looking directly at him, Bai Zhan could clearly feel a powerful aura pressing down on him, which startled him and made cold sweat pour down his forehead.
"Oh dear, Elder Bai, what's wrong?" Li Feng exclaimed dramatically, covering his mouth in surprise. "Are you feeling unwell? Why don't you stay with Miss Bai as well? The medical skills in the palace are quite good..."
"N-no, that's not necessary. I-I just remembered I have something to attend to, so I'll take my leave now," Bai Zhan stammered as he stumbled out of the garden. He finally understood why his daughter had repeatedly tried to stop him; it wasn't just because they were in Leaving the Royal Palace but also due to Li Feng's formidable strength.
It was impossible for him to take Baike away today, and he couldn't afford to make a mistake himself. He left in a hurry, almost breaking into a run as he disappeared from the garden.
"Shall I send someone to escort Miss Bai back to rest?" Li Feng gestured, and soon a maid approached. "Please, Miss Bai."
Baike nodded silently and followed the maid. From the moment Li Feng appeared, she knew there was no way she could leave; it was already fortunate that her father had not been detained. However, there were still some things her father hadn't clarified, leaving her feeling as if a sharp blade was hanging over her heart.
"Will I have another chance to see my father?" Baike turned back to look at Li Feng.
Li Feng only smiled without answering, continuing to gesture for her to leave as he watched the helpless Baike depart. (To be continued.)
