"There's an Apple Snail in the river!"
In the past, Xia Muxin rarely went to the river to fetch water. Even when washing clothes, she would stay at the shallow edge because she was afraid of water—not just a little afraid. Naturally, she had no idea what an Apple Snail was.
"What is an Apple Snail?" Songzi exclaimed, surprised by her sister's words. He rushed over and saw that Xia Muxin had already fished the Apple Snail out of the wooden bucket.
"Ah, sister, throw it away quickly! This thing is poisonous. Last year, Er Ya and the others brought some home to eat, and they ended up with terrible stomachaches. They even had to see a doctor and get medicine afterward. There are plenty of these things in the river; we never dare to take them. How did it end up in the bucket?"
Seeing his sister staring blankly at the Apple Snail, Songzi panicked. He dashed forward and knocked the Apple Snail out of her hand. Summer Forest also came over and kicked the Apple Snail away while warning Xia Muxin not to touch it.
At that moment, Xia Muxin's mind was filled with thoughts of business opportunities; she couldn't hear what they were saying. Besides, if they got sick after eating it, it was probably because they hadn’t cleaned the Apple Snail’s waste properly...
That night, Summer Forest and Xia Tieshu worked tirelessly to craft a Crossbow. It had rained heavily from midnight until dawn, stopping only at five in the morning. Xia Muxin was so excited that she hadn’t slept a wink, her mind racing with thoughts of hunting with the Crossbow. Early in the morning, she pulled Songzi out of bed and asked Xia Tieshu to carve arrows from bamboo.
Breakfast was prepared by Aunt Xia, who made a pot of thin porridge mixed with plenty of Rice Bran, which tasted quite unpleasant. After eating, Xia Muxin had Songzi carry a few Bamboo Baskets that Aunt Xia had woven herself; they were very practical. She also had Summer Forest pull the ox cart as the three of them headed into the mountains.
Under Xia Muxin's guidance, the ox cart was transformed into a flatbed cart, making it easier to pull.
"Songzi, gather all these Jihua plants. And separate the three-leaf, five-leaf, and seven-leaf ones. Don’t ask anything right now; just listen to me. Dad, you pick up some Firewood here while I go check if there are any mushrooms over there."
Summer Forest was very pleased with his daughter and readily agreed. After all, he had come to Daimiao Mountain many times before and often went alone to forage for wild vegetables. However, he didn’t realize that what they had eaten yesterday was different from usual—much tastier—but he had no idea that those things were edible too.
After giving her instructions, Xia Muxin shouldered a basket and headed into the mountains. It had rained last night, so there should be some Wild Vegetables on the rocks.
She had discovered the rocks when she fell off the cliff, and they were quite a distance away with steep terrain. The reason she didn't let Summer Forest and the others follow was to avoid alarming them.
On the way, she used a Machete to cut some vines and tied them into knots, creating a long rope of over ten meters. Upon reaching her destination, she tied one end of the vine to a large tree and the other end around her waist. With one hand holding the basket, she began to climb down towards the rocks. After climbing for a while, her eyes lit up as she spotted plenty of Wild Vegetables. In less than half an hour, her basket was full, and her backpack was nearly filled as well.
On her way back, she noticed some movement in a pile of grass. Gaining courage, she approached and couldn't help but smile widely. She set down her basket and took out her Crossbow from her Backpack. In her previous life, she had been an excellent marksman, hitting every target within two hundred meters.
Drawing the bow was one of her favorite skills, and at this moment, using the Crossbow felt effortless.
