The old man was reluctant to accept the thick oil paper bag, but he was immensely grateful to receive a Scallion Pancake.
"Thank you, big sister. Grandpa and I can share this," Small said, noticing her grandfather's refusal to take the oil paper bag. She opened the pancake a bit and handed the larger half to him.
Xia Muxin watched the thoughtful child and couldn't help but think of her own little Song, who was also strong and sensible. Her heart softened even more.
"Grandpa, please don't be stubborn with me. It's getting late; you don't want your family to worry," she insisted, firmly placing the oil paper bag in the old man's hands. Then she ran over to the cart, retrieved a Sack given by Uncle Da Zhong, and hurried back to the old man. Without a word, she untied the rope securing the Bamboo Basket and poured both Fava Beans into the Sack. She then pulled out One or Two silver coins from her pocket and handed them to him, advising:
"Grandpa, please don't refuse. I really did buy these Fava Beans, and who knows, I might need more from you in the future. You should take Small home early." With that, she struggled to lift the Fava Beans onto the cart.
"Dad, we should head back now; Mom and the others must be worried."
Summer Forest looked at his daughter’s fiery spirit and was at a loss for words. But she was his little cotton-padded jacket and the smartest one in the family. He glanced at the old man, whose trembling lips glistened with tears as he seemed unsure of what to say. Finally, he patted the back of his head and said, "Grandpa, just listen to my daughter and go home, okay?" With that, he walked toward the cart.
By the time they returned home, it was already dark. Songzi anxiously paced back and forth at the entrance of their Thatched Cottage, occasionally stretching his neck to look into the night until he heard his sister calling him and joyfully ran over.
"Songzi, come help bring these herbs inside," Xia Muxin greeted him with a smile as she reached the door, tossing aside a twig while carrying a Sack of Fava Beans into the house.
The family busily went about their tasks in a warm atmosphere, unaware of two figures lurking not far from them.
"Young Master, it's getting late; we should head back."
Shen Muhan kept a distance while following Xia Muxin as soon as they left. The silence was unusual; Ming Yi observed that it was the first time their master treated someone this way. But that girl, with her small arms and legs, could she really catch the master's eye?
Or did the master have other intentions?
Yet, they could only speculate about their master's thoughts in their hearts and dared not ask. Glancing at the sky, Ming Yi steeled himself and spoke up.
Shen Muhan remained silent, his eyes fixed on Xia Muxin and her companions as they moved their belongings. He only turned away when the dilapidated door of her home finally closed.
“Wow, sis, what is this? It smells so good!” Over here, after finishing moving their things, the family was exhausted and panting. Aunt Xia ladled out the wild vegetable soup that had been warming in the pot onto a wooden table made from planks. Xia Xiaosong took the oil paper package handed to her by her sister and swallowed with excitement.
“Mom, why haven't you eaten yet at this late hour?” Xia Muxin said mysteriously as she ruffled Xia Xiaosong's hair. Seeing that Aunt Xia had already arranged five bamboo tubes, she stepped forward to take the chopsticks from her hand.
“Mom likes to eat together as a family; that's what makes it home!”
