Summer Forest still felt a lingering fear from the last encounter with the thugs. When she saw Xia Muxin carrying a basket and preparing to head out, she quickly set aside her work and hurried after her.
Xia Muxin didn’t refuse; she simply asked Summer Forest to wash her face first, then change into a new outfit before they left together.
Having bought new fabric, Aunt Xia's eyes gradually brightened. During her free time, she busied herself making a new outfit for each of them. Xia Muxin was particularly skilled at embroidery and loved sky blue, so she chose that color for herself. The dress was of a simple design, but Xia Muxin suggested some modifications for the sleeves, opting for a layered style that was fitted underneath and loose on the outside. This way, when working, she could simply roll up the outer layer.
She adored lotus flowers and embroidered several blossoms at the hem of her dress using water-colored threads. With just a few casual stitches, she transformed ordinary fabric into something extraordinary.
Aunt Xia and the others praised her work repeatedly.
Summer Forest had chosen deep gray fabric, while Xia Tieshu opted for light gray, Songzi selected grass green, and Aunt Xia went with teal. Living in the countryside made it difficult to wear overly bright clothing, and besides, Aunt Xia herself didn’t care much for flamboyant styles.
Of course, they were all reluctant to wear these new outfits casually; it was the first time in years they had new clothes made. When the garments were finally completed, tears of joy filled their eyes.
Neither Summer Forest nor Aunt Xia had ever imagined they would live such a stable and comfortable life. Indeed, this kind of life felt incredibly fulfilling for them...
“Be careful on your way back,” Aunt Xia called out as they prepared to leave. She brought out a large basin filled with fresh mushrooms. For the past few days, she had been cleaning the mushrooms they had gathered. Xia Muxin had taught her how to wash and dry them properly. Breathing in the rich aroma of mushrooms, Aunt Xia took a deep breath and gazed at the retreating figures of mother and daughter, unable to resist calling out with concern.
“Mother, is there enough salt?”
Just after giving her instructions, Xia Tieshu's voice came from behind her. He was busy baking dried fish by the stove.
The Matsuba Fish had finally made its debut; they had been quite successful in their catch these past few days, sometimes bringing in four to five pounds of fresh fish in a single day. However, the fish were small and difficult to sell, so Xia Muxin suggested that they dry the fish to make dried fish.
These fish had been raised for several days, with the water changed multiple times each day, and most of the impurities from their gills had been removed. Following Xia Muxin's guidance, Xia Tieshu first cleaned out the insides of the fish. This was simple; there was no need for a knife. He just gently squeezed the belly of the small fish with his hands, and the intestines and gallbladder came out easily. After completing this, he added some salt. Since he rarely cooked, he wasn't very good at measuring salt and decided to ask his mother for help.
Hearing this, Aunt Xia reluctantly withdrew her gaze and placed the mushrooms aside before stepping in. She looked at the cleaned fish and then added a little salt with a wooden spoon. Muxin had said that too much salt shouldn't be added; just a tiny bit would suffice.
"Mom, I think I'll help you dry the mushrooms first. I'm afraid I won't do well with the fish..."
Seeing Aunt Xia add salt to the fish, Xia Tieshu shyly scratched the back of his head and then said with a flushed face.
