The cake was still hot from the pot, burning his mouth and causing blisters, yet he continued to gulp it down eagerly, his eyes rolling back several times from the heat.
As soon as he stepped out of the kitchen, cheers erupted around him. In the blink of an eye, the Pumpkin Cake had been devoured completely. Xia Muxin had saved some for herself and wrapped it in oil paper. Watching the group of adults playfully bickering like children made her shake her head with a smile before she picked up her basket and left.
She completely missed hearing their discussions.
"Uh, Plum," one of them said, "do you think Miss Muxin has taken a liking to you? She always keeps you inside to help."
"Yeah, yeah! You better seize this opportunity. Muxin is a good girl—filial and capable."
"Not just that; she's bound to be successful when she grows up. A daughter-in-law like her is hard to find even with a lantern."
Plum merely bit down on the Pumpkin Cake in her hand, her face flushed with embarrassment.

At Daimiao Mountain, the hot wind howled, stirring up waves of golden grain in the fields.
In the fields of the Muxin family, a dozen strong men wielded sickles, cutting through the ripe rice in various directions. A few others were threshing nearby, while Wang Shoucai, Wang Dafu, and the Meng family stood leisurely to one side, holding oil-paper umbrellas, urging everyone to work faster while munching on sunflower seeds.
By the time Xia Tieshu and his companions arrived, the Three Acres of Land had nearly been harvested, with about ten large sacks filled to the brim beside them.
"You heartless bastards! What grievances do I, the Xia family, have with you that you must keep targeting us time and again?"
Aunt Xia stumbled along the edge of the field. Seeing their hard-earned harvest about to be taken away by the Wang family, she could no longer remain calm. She rushed over and threw herself onto one of the sacks filled with grain.
Xia Xiaosong hurried forward, choking back tears as he pulled at his mother.
Xia Tieshu walked slowly with his cane, but his eyes were bloodshot with rage; he wished nothing more than to take down these unreasonable bullies.
The field was crowded with villagers, making it feel unusually cramped as they exchanged heated words. The village chief stepped in, but the Wang family remained indifferent, continuing to load sacks onto their cart while urging their workers to hurry.
Seeing this, Xia Tieshu threw down his cane to block those moving the sacks. In that moment of confrontation, a fight broke out.
