"Why do you look so familiar? Who are you, really?"
At that moment, a sharp voice rang out from not far away. Xia Muxin's heart tightened as she turned to look, only to see Zhao Yaowei had somehow grabbed Yan Zhouwan by her collar, forcing her to meet his gaze. His dark eyes were filled with a chilling intensity. Without a second thought, Xia Muxin rushed over and yanked Zhao Yaowei's hand away.
Yan Zhouwan's eyes were red, her face pale; it was unclear whether she was frightened or for some other reason. Xia Muxin held her tightly in her arms, her own eyes icy cold.
"Have you lost your mind? You look familiar too, like that flower thief who was wanted a few days ago. Should I take that knife and cut off your head for the reward?"
Zhao Yaowei's face twisted in anger at being compared to the flower thief. His rugged features trembled with rage as he glared at Xia Muxin with venomous eyes. Unfazed, Xia Muxin stared back defiantly.
Suddenly, Zhao Yaowei narrowed his eyes, gathering energy in his palm as he launched an attack at both Xia Muxin and Yan Zhouwan. However, midway through, a tremendous force disrupted his strike, causing him to stagger back a few steps and spit out a mouthful of blood.
Dust swirled around them like crashing waves, forming a massive circular vortex. From a distance, it looked as if a giant building had collapsed, sending clouds of dust into the air that blurred vision.
"In this world, anyone I, Shen Muhan, wish to protect will be safeguarded. Even if the Emperor himself tries to take them away, I will not hesitate to kill."
Shen Muhan landed lightly on his toes, standing with his hands behind his back, looking down imperiously at the gasping Zhao Yaowei clutching his chest.
Yan Zhouwan was so frightened that her wide eyes didn't dare blink. Xia Muxin shot Zhao Yaowei a look that said he deserved it and then pulled Yan Zhouwan away toward home.
"Shen Muhan, you won't be arrogant for long. You are a commoner while I am an official. I can let these villagers live or die as I please."
Zhao Yaowei spat blood on the ground and glared coldly at Shen Muhan with a sneer.
Shen Muhan merely smiled in response to his words.
"Yes, you say I'm just a commoner now, but I better be careful with my family in the capital. Who knows, if I'm in a bad mood one day, I might just have them blown to smithereens."
The person threatening him hadn't even been born yet. If it weren't for the timing, the Zhao Family Brothers would have long since met their end.
Zhao Yaowei was stunned; it seemed that the cold and ruthless King of Hell had returned. In this world, there was nothing he didn't dare to do, only things he didn't want to do. They thought he was no longer the same as before, but little did they know that when they touched his bottom line...
Well, at least he had a bottom line again—Xia Muxin...
"Yan Zhouwan, are you alright? Just lie down and rest for a while. If you're tired, go ahead and sleep."
Over here, Xia Muxin pulled Yan Zhouwan directly into her room and made her sit on the bed. She bent slightly to meet her gaze and noticed her eyes were unfocused and devoid of any spirit. Gently patting her shoulder, she spoke softly.
"Muxin..."
Yan Zhouwan suddenly clung tightly to Xia Muxin's waist, tears streaming silently down her face. Seeing the Zhao siblings reminded her of how her brother and sister had died; those images flashed before her eyes repeatedly, as if they had just happened yesterday.
"It's alright, it's over now. One day we will bring them to justice."
Xia Muxin comforted her softly, staying by her side until she finally fell asleep before quietly stepping out.
At that moment, Shen Muhan stood with his hands behind his back on one side of the courtyard, looking up slightly with a complex expression in his eyes, lost in thought.
Xia Muxin tiptoed over, intending to scare him for fun. However, before she could make a move, Shen Muhan turned to look at her with a teasing glint in his eyes.
Seeing Xia Muxin awkwardly retract her hand, he pulled her over to stand beside him and then asked lightly:
"Have you slept?"
Xia Muxin naturally knew who he was referring to and nodded with a hint of gloom in her eyes.
"Muxin, they cannot be killed right now."
Shen Muhan held her shoulders firmly, turning her slightly so that they faced each other. Seeing the surprise in her eyes, he spoke in a low voice.
Although Xia Muxin did not understand why he did not directly kill the Zhao Family Brothers, she knew he had his own difficulties and concerns. At this moment, as he explained to her so earnestly, her heart warmed, and she instinctively threw herself into his warm embrace...
Time passed quickly, and Xia Muxin's business gradually took off. The red bricks were selling exceptionally well, with daily orders coming in. She had hired quite a few more hands, and now she could produce a kiln's worth of bricks in about a month. The first three kilns had already been booked by Ouyang Xuan, and orders were lined up until after the New Year.
Recently, Shen Muhan rarely accompanied her and spent most of his time at Xiao Yan's place. She did not know what he was busy with every day, but she could tell he was exhausted. Sometimes he would return every few days. It had been a long time since she visited Town because things at home were simply too hectic.
The Brick Factory was one aspect of her business, but the Thresher was also selling very well. With less than a month left until the early rice harvest, people from various villages came flocking to her. Combined with last year's orders, she had booked up to fifty machines during this period. However, this was meant for long-term use; the demand would only be temporary. Even if the entire Tianli Kingdom placed orders with her, she believed that within a year, sales would stagnate.
On another front, she had to manage matters related to Dayaoshan. She had secured the land for several months but had yet to start work on it. It pained her to see it lying idle.
However, her manpower was limited, and there were only so many trustworthy people available.
In the end, Ouyang Xuan did not agree to her request for consultation because after discussing it with the Ouyang Family, they cut off his funding. He felt powerless but had not left; instead, he remained in Daimiao Village, often chasing after her.
The two Workshops had already started operations. Besides the previous Cartoon Cake line, she had introduced some new products as well. The little shop in Town was bustling every day.
Since her brother Xia Tieshu had returned home to work, Xia Muxin entrusted Sister Swallow to manage the shop and found a few honest and reliable young women in the village to help out.
Today is the first day of May, and in just a few days, it will be the Duanwu Festival. For the children, it is a wonderful and anticipated time. Xia Muxin has been busy visiting several shops in Town, and aside from the Thresher store, the rest are all branches of Delicious and Abundant.
The Garlic Cloves have already sold out due to high demand. Today, however, is the day to sample Salted Egg and Century Egg.
"Mom, are these raw or cooked? Can we really eat them?"
Songzi hasn't been home for almost a month and misses his family dearly. As soon as he returned this morning, he clung to Aunt Xia and wouldn’t let go. He even bullied Xue Er to tears because they were fighting over Small. Xue Er scratched his face, leaving everyone shaking their heads in disbelief.
Small is from another village, and many villagers still look at him with disdain. To put it bluntly, they regard him with contempt. If it weren't for the Xia Family, any ordinary family would struggle to accept Small in this village.
Despite his young age, he is quite sensible and knows how to read people's expressions. The Xia Family all likes him.
"I don't know either; I haven't tasted them yet."
Xia Muxin has been so busy lately that she feels dizzy. Just collecting chicken and duck eggs has taken her to countless villages, bringing back no less than ten thousand eggs, which startled the whole family. On the table now sits a bowl of Salted Egg while she is still in the kitchen preparing Century Egg. Aunt Xia gently pats Songzi's head and says with a kind smile.
Before long, Yan Zhouwan and Xia Jihua each come in carrying a plate filled with various preparations of Century Egg. The last large bowl is brought out by Xia Muxin: Century Egg and Lean Meat Porridge.
Around the table, more than ten pairs of eyes widen in surprise. They initially thought that with her cooking today and Songzi back home, there would be many delicious dishes, but instead, there are just dozens of plates of eggs...
"Sis, you don’t love me anymore."
Songzi bites down on his chopsticks, his eyes scanning each plate before pouting in deep disappointment.
The food at school is terrible; it's mostly boiled without any flavor. He hasn’t seen a drop of Minced Meat in half a month. Having grown accustomed to home-cooked meals, he has become picky about food, but for the sake of his studies, he has no choice but to eat.
Moreover, they mostly ate it mixed with plain water.
Xia Muxin smiled sweetly and picked a few pieces of Century Egg to put into Songzi's bowl, saying, "Give it a try first."
Songzi responded with a faint "mm," then used his chopsticks to pick up a small piece and put it in his mouth. Immediately, his eyes widened, and he grabbed another piece, mumbling, "So good, really so good."
Ouyang Xuan watched in horror as Songzi devoured the food, his mind racing. Was this egg the color it was because of the lime?
Of course, the specific steps were completed by Xia Muxin, Xia Jihua, and Yan Zhouwan; he had only seen the surface. After all, Xia Muxin had a shadow over the incident with the Orchid Bean. Although Ouyang Xuan hadn't made these himself, they were still made by people from the Ouyang Family.
"Young Master, you should eat less of these. I've made you some soup separately; it will be ready soon."
Ermiao's belly was only a little over four months along but was much larger than that of an average pregnant woman. Everyone speculated whether she might be having twins. Although this Century Egg didn't contain any other chemical materials, Xia Muxin was still cautious and didn't let her eat too much.
Ermiao wore a face full of happiness as she accepted the Century Egg and Lean Meat Porridge that Xia Muxin had served her. The first bite was addictive; she felt like she couldn't stop.
Dear readers, it's the end of the month, and we have quarterly inventory. After work this week, there are three days dedicated to business training. Damn it, they're even giving credits for it! If I don't reach the target, I'll lose points, which has led to less frequent updates lately. I apologize.
