Thinking of this, Liu Bei hurried over to borrow money from Ye Xiaohan.
"Xiao Han, look, shouldn't we call the doctor first? After all, it's a matter of life and death, and he's a relative. We can't just watch him get into trouble," Liu Bei said, mustering his courage to approach Ye Xiaohan.
To his surprise, he thought that Ye Xiaohan would be reluctant since she and Liu Second Uncle's family had never gotten along well. Even if she didn't refuse outright, he expected some hesitation.
However, Ye Xiaohan readily agreed: "They are your relatives; it's only right for you to help them. While I don't want to be their servant, I won't stop you."
She handed the money to Liu Bei and urged him to hurry: "I'm not trying to scare you, but if you don't move quickly, you might not find the doctor in time."
"Xiao Han, thank you so much!" Liu Bei was deeply moved. Despite how Liu Second Uncle's family treated her, she was still willing to lend a hand in this critical moment.
Ye Xiaohan accepted his gratitude without reservation and watched as Liu Bei rushed off.
The more arrogant and domineering Liu Second Uncle's family became, the more gracious and composed she needed to appear. This way, it would provide a stark contrast for Liu Bei and help him see Liu Second Uncle's selfishness sooner.
The perfect plan was now waiting for its conclusion.
In a good mood, Ye Xiaohan took Liu Yang and Liu Qi out for breakfast. Running around early in the morning had made her extremely hungry.
The doctor arrived quickly. Worried about being late, Liu Bei nearly carried the doctor back with him in a rush.
However, the conclusion was no different.
"This poison is extremely dangerous. I advise you to act decisively; if treatment is delayed any longer, you might not even be able to save his life," the doctor said while shaking his head and stroking his white beard.
Upon hearing this, Liu Second Aunt immediately began to scold: "You quack! Are you senile? Can you even diagnose a patient? Liu Bei, where did you find this fraud? You can't just ignore your brother's life for the sake of saving a little money!"
The doctor was not like the others; there was no reason for him to be insulted without cause. Angrily, he declared, "If you do not trust me, then I am of no use to you. However, you should inquire about me; I, Old Sun, have practiced medicine for fifty years, and in this area of ten miles, there are hardly a few who can do better than I."
"Doctor Sun," 6 Bei quickly apologized, "please forgive us. My Second Aunt is just overly worried and spoke without thinking. Doctor, you cannot leave! My brother's life is uncertain; we need your care."
6 Second Uncle scolded 6 Second Aunt, "You unlucky woman! All you do is create chaos. Stop howling here and disturbing the doctor while he treats the patient." He turned to the doctor with a flattering smile, "Doctor, you must not leave! My son's life is in your hands; you must save him! He is my only son; if anything happens to him... oh!"
6 Second Aunt rushed over and hugged the doctor's medical box, crying out, "Doctor, you must save my son! If he doesn't make it, I won't live either. We can accompany each other on the road to the underworld!"
The doctor found himself unable to move due to their entanglement. Seeing their desperation and knowing the patient was indeed in critical condition, he advised, "You should decide quickly; this cannot be delayed."
6 Bei checked his brother's breathing; it was already weak and intermittent.
In despair, 6 Second Aunt asked, "Is it true that his hand cannot be saved?"
The doctor shook his head. "You can either save his hand or his life; you can only choose one."
Upon hearing this, the elderly couple from the 6 family immediately slumped down to the ground—one sighed deeply while the other began to cry.
6 Bei helped one up and then went to assist the other; everything was in disarray.
Meanwhile, Ye Xiaohan was in her room sipping tea and snacking while occasionally teasing Qi. She had decided not to go to the shop today; this performance needed a heavyweight character to bring it to a conclusion.
The door creaked open slightly as 6 Yang stealthily slipped inside.
"Sister-in-law," he whispered conspiratorially, "just like yours, that doctor said the same thing. Second Uncle and the others can't take it anymore; they're about to faint on the ground and can't even be dragged away. If we wait a bit longer, they will probably agree to amputate."
Ye Xiaohan waved her hand dismissively. "Go on; it's your turn to shine now. Perform well and don't embarrass me."
"Don't worry, sister-in-law. When it comes to deceiving people, even my big brother can't see through me!" Liu Yang said proudly.
Liu Second Uncle and his wife endured their grief, accepting reality and agreeing to have Liu Di's hands cut off in exchange for his life.
"Doctor, please proceed," Liu Second Uncle said, tears streaming down his face as he turned away, unable to watch.
Liu Second Aunt held Liu Di tightly, crying out, "My poor son, why is your life so miserable? You haven't even enjoyed two good days before encountering such a disaster. It's truly unfair! My son, you have suffered so much!"
"It's because of the heavens' eyes that he lies here! This is called retribution; the net of heaven is vast and wide, yet nothing escapes it!"
Just as the doctor was about to act, Liu Yang burst in from outside, pointing an accusatory finger at Liu Second Uncle's family.
Liu Bei stopped him, saying, "Liu Yang, what nonsense are you talking? Get out of here; this is no place for a child. Don't disturb the doctor while he's treating someone."
With Ye Xiaohan backing him up, Liu Yang wasn't afraid of even his big brother: "I'm not being foolish. Just ask him what he did to end up poisoned like this, lying here waiting to die."
Before Liu Bei could get angry, Liu Yang launched into a rapid-fire recounting of the entire situation. He omitted only the part where he had already suspected the culprit and had applied poison to the money just to catch the thief.
He spoke in detail and at lightning speed, leaving no room for others to interject.
Once Liu Yang finished his account and took a deep breath, he concluded, "That's how it is. Who would have thought that the thief would be him! This is all his own doing. Big brother, you treat them with such courtesy, yet they are not only ungrateful but also want Sister-in-law's secret recipe. They want to rob our family's wealth; if they can't take it by force, they'll resort to stealing."
He turned to Liu Bei and said, "Big brother, wake up! People like this don't deserve to be our relatives. They only care about themselves and treat our Liu family as their plaything; they won't stop until they've drained us dry!"
"Is this true?" Liu Bei looked deeply shaken, his face pale.
Liu Yang quickly nodded. "Of course it's true; absolutely certain. If you don't believe me, just ask sister-in-law. You should trust her words."
Everyone turned to the door, and Ye Xiaohan slowly walked in, having appeared there without anyone noticing.
The two elders of the Liu family reacted instantly, their faces turning red with rage. They could hardly contain themselves from wanting to tear Ye Xiaohan apart. "So it was you who harmed my son! I found it strange that he was fine just yesterday, and suddenly this morning he has turned into this! It must be the poison from you, heartless vixen!"
Second Aunt rushed forward, ready to strike. Ye Xiaohan tightened her grip on the hidden needle in her sleeve, waiting for her to come closer. However, she was intercepted halfway by Liu Bei.
Second Uncle pointed at Liu Bei, shouting, "You unfilial son! Even now you want to defend this woman! Look at how badly your brother has been harmed by her. This woman actually poisoned her own family; she is simply inhuman, with a heart as cold as a snake's! Just because she received a few taels of silver—it's all money from the Liu family; who spends it isn't important!"
Ignoring their shouts, Liu Bei looked grim and frightening.
Ye Xiaohan remained expressionless. "What crime have I committed? I haven't done anything wrong; I merely applied some medicinal liquid to my own money. How does that concern anyone else? As for you all, breaking and entering—aren't you thinking of going to see the magistrate? Why don't we go right now and see how the county magistrate judges this?"
Liu Yang immediately stepped forward to pull the two elders away. "Let's go, let's see the magistrate right now!"
The two elders of the Liu family were unwilling to go; if this matter escalated, they would have no justification. If they truly reached the county office, they feared they would all end up in jail.
Ye Xiaohan looked at them with a cold smile. "Feel free to make a scene; the more chaotic it gets, the better. Once you're done making noise, your son's life will be lost."
Second Aunt cried without stopping, her face already unrecognizable. "You vixen! How can your heart be so cruel? You wish for my son to die! You have no conscience and deserve nothing good."
Ye Xiaohan remained unmoved. "I stand firm in my actions; I have nothing to fear from retribution. Your son is indeed guilty of theft; if he dies, he has no one but himself to blame."
Liu Bei's gaze shifted between his brother and Ye Xiaohan. His eyes were deep and unfathomable, unlike his usual kindness; they resembled a turbulent river beneath which endless waves churned.
When Ye Xiaohan met his gaze, she felt an involuntary urge to step back but managed to regain her composure just in time.
Liu Bei pointed at his brother and asked, "Since you created this medicinal liquid, do you have any way to cure the poison?"
Ye Xiaohan suppressed her surprise and replied, "Of course I can."
Upon hearing that the poison could be cured, the two elders from the Liu family immediately fell silent, their eyes fixed intently on Ye Xiaohan. If she could indeed cure the poison, there would be no need to amputate their son's hands; he would be saved.
Ye Xiaohan stood still, waiting for them to come forward and plead for help. After holding back her anger for so long, she finally had the chance to return it. It was only right that she heard an apology in person.
Liu Second Aunt wanted Ye Xiaohan to save her son but found it hard to lower her pride. She stood there, speechless, her tear-soaked eyes red and swollen as they locked onto Ye Xiaohan.
Liu Second Uncle pushed her gently, and with no other choice, Liu Second Aunt forced a smile and approached to plead, "Liu Beisheng's wife, we are all family. Please, for the sake of Liu Bei, spare us this time. We won't dare again. If you save my son, we will listen to you from now on!"
Ye Xiaohan turned her gaze toward Liu Second Uncle. Liu Second Aunt quickly pulled him over to apologize to Ye Xiaohan. With no other option, Liu Second Uncle could only lower his head and admit his mistakes.
Finally, she released a breath of pent-up frustration.
Ye Xiaohan held her head high, feeling as if the air around her had become much fresher.
Behind her, Liu Bei looked at her with a somber expression, his eyes deep and inscrutable, leaving one to wonder what he was thinking.
If Ye Xiaohan were to turn around at that moment, she would realize that this version of Liu Bei was the same mysterious Liu Bei she had seen during those few nights.
