Ye Xiaohan deliberately put on a stern face and said, "How could you have a toothache? Did you sneak some candy again?"
Six Seven loved sweets, and now that she was in the capital, she was dazzled by the new varieties she had never seen before, wanting to try every single one. Ye Xiaohan, seeing that she was in a strange environment, decided to give her some time to adapt and didn’t impose too many restrictions.
The result was that Six Seven seemed like a rabbit that had fallen into a vegetable garden, indulging herself without restraint, completely unaware of moderation. Now, with a toothache, she couldn’t eat anything at all.
Starving and in pain, Six Seven stared longingly at the dishes on the table, swallowing hard.
"Now you know it hurts, right?" Ye Xiaohan asked. "Are you still going to eat recklessly like this in the future?"
Six Seven sniffled and replied pitifully, "I won’t do it again. From now on, I’ll only eat one piece of candy."
She even held up her thumb and index finger to demonstrate, but after realizing it was too little to satisfy her craving, she quietly widened the distance between her fingers.
Ye Xiaohan couldn’t help but laugh; Six Seven had become much livelier compared to when they first met. The previous shyness was nowhere to be seen, replaced by an endearing mischief that made one want to laugh and cry at the same time.
After taking measures to relieve Six Seven's pain, she could finally eat properly and happily embraced her bowl of food.
Ye Xiaohan shifted her gaze to Six Yang and asked, "What about you? What’s going on? Is the food not to your liking?" It shouldn’t be; the dishes were similar to those before, and he seemed to be enjoying them.
Six Yang looked up but hesitated to speak. Ye Xiaohan curiously looked at him again and was surprised to see two large dark circles under his eyes.
"You didn’t sleep last night? How did you get such big dark circles?" Ye Xiaohan said seriously. "It’s good that you love reading, but if it affects your health because you’re staying up late, it’s not worth it."
Everything should be done in moderation; even good things can turn bad if taken too far. The principle of excess is detrimental has been the hard-earned lesson of many.
"It’s not that; I’ve been following the schedule you set for me and haven’t stayed up late," Six Yang said with panda eyes, his gaze flickering. "Sister-in-law, I... well..."
Ye Xiaohan raised her chopsticks as if to tap his head. "Why are you learning such bad habits at your age? Sighing like this isn’t acceptable; you need to change that soon. And if you have something to say, just say it instead of beating around the bush."
"Well, I can’t believe it," Liu Yang suddenly sat up straight, glancing around furtively before leaning in closer and lowering his voice. "Sister-in-law, this house isn’t clean. It seems like we’ve bought another Haunted House!"
"Huh?" Ye Xiaohan shot him a disdainful sideways glance, thinking that with all the mystery, there must be something serious going on, but it turned out to be just a child's paranoia.
"First of all, the last house we bought didn’t have any of this; it was just a misunderstanding. So there’s no such thing as 'again.'"
Ye Xiaohan raised one finger, then another.
"Second, children shouldn’t talk about strange things; they’re all lies. Didn’t you used to not believe in this? Why have you suddenly become so timid?"
Liu Yang hurriedly defended himself, "Alright, I take back that 'again.' But this time is different; this time it’s real!"
"Coward," Ye Xiaohan mocked. "Liu Yang, most people get braver as they grow older; why are you the opposite? Qi, look at your Second Brother being so scared; it’s too funny. Don’t learn from him."
Qi, who had been called out, lifted his head from his bowl. He hadn’t really heard anything but nodded obediently in agreement. "Sister-in-law is right!"
"Just eat your food; kids shouldn’t interrupt!" Liu Yang shot a glare at Qi and picked up some greens for him.
Then he swore to Ye Xiaohan, "This time it’s really true! I heard it! There’s a sound in the study! A woman screams every night when it’s quiet; sometimes she even cries. That sound is chilling!"
Seeing that Liu Yang wasn’t joking, Ye Xiaohan felt something was off too.
"Screams and cries from a woman?" she asked. "Are you sure you weren’t just half-asleep and dreaming?"
Liu Yang grew anxious. "I heard it with my own ears! On the first night we moved in, I was reading in the study when I heard it. At first, I thought I was mistaken, but then I heard it every night after that!"
He pointed to his ears. "Am I supposed to be wrong every night? I was worried I was overthinking it, so I stayed awake and listened carefully; I heard it again! Sister-in-law, there’s really something wrong with this house!"
To avoid causing trouble for Ye Xiaohan, he had been looking for reasons all along. Despite his doubts, he kept them bottled up inside until the dark circles under his eyes from sleepless nights gave him away.
"It does sound quite strange," Liu Yang said, not one to stir up trouble for no reason, nor someone who would jump to conclusions. If he heard it, then he truly heard it.
Ye Xiaohan set down her bowl and chopsticks, saying, "I believe you heard a woman's voice, but it could also be an illusion. Perhaps it was just the wind passing through somewhere or a sound coming from another place?"
"How about this? Tonight, I'll stay with you and wait to see what’s really going on." If this matter wasn’t resolved, Liu Yang would never get rid of his dark circles.
So that night, Ye Xiaohan stayed in Liu Yang's room, waiting for the strange sound to appear.
However, until dawn broke, everything was calm and quiet; not a single suspicious sound emerged.
Ye Xiaohan glanced at Liu Yang with an expression that spoke volumes.
"Why is this happening? Why didn’t it show up tonight?" Liu Yang was puzzled and worried that Ye Xiaohan might think he was lying, so he hurried to explain.
Once he finished, Ye Xiaohan replied, "I’m not doubting you; I’m just concerned about your health. Staying up all night isn’t a solution. Why don’t you switch rooms for now? We can see if that sound comes back later."
Although Liu Yang was somewhat startled by the voice he heard in the middle of the night, his primary concern was the safety of his family. He wasn’t particularly afraid. After hearing Ye Xiaohan's suggestion, he declined.
"No need for that. I’ll stay here. If that voice shows up again, I’ll come get you!"
If that strange sound never returned, that would be even better.
In the following days, Liu Yang kept a close ear out every night, but the voice seemed to have vanished completely. Even he began to doubt whether he had truly heard anything at all.
As long as his family was safe, he hoped it wouldn’t happen again.
The haunting incident faded away without resolution. Seeing that there was nothing unusual at home anymore, Ye Xiaohan turned her attention back to going out. This time luck was on her side; she found a suitable place.
Ye Xiaohan observed discreetly for a while and noticed that although this shop wasn’t very large, it was located in the bustling city center with a significant amount of foot traffic. If she took over this place, any business would likely thrive.
The owner of the shop was a middle-aged man who, for some unknown reason, wanted to sell his business. Ye Xiaohan saw this as a great opportunity.
Due to its prime location, shops in this area were in high demand, whether for rent or sale. If one wasn't careful, someone else would snatch it up in no time.
Without further ado, after observing the situation and deeming it feasible, Ye Xiaohan approached the shop owner.
After some pleasantries, they got straight to the point.
"Boss Yan, I heard you want to sell this shop. How much are you asking for it?" Ye Xiaohan asked directly, avoiding any unnecessary small talk.
She wasn't in a rush; while this shop was good, there were plenty of other decent ones available. If negotiations fell through, she had other options.
However, Boss Yan's response surprised her a bit.
"One thousand taels of silver, firm price," Boss Yan said. "Boss Ye, I'm not asking for too much. Just look at the location of my shop; it's right in the center of the bustling market. No matter what business you start here, there will always be customers. You won't take long to recoup your investment."
Ye Xiaohan smiled and replied, "I can see that the location is excellent; that's precisely what I'm after. Otherwise, this shop wouldn't be accepted by anyone looking to do business—it's a bit too much."
Even in the capital city, one thousand taels of silver was a significant amount; with that money, one could purchase an even better shop.
"Oh come on, Boss Ye, that's not quite right," Boss Yan countered. "Isn't location the most important thing in business? With a good location, even selling firewood can yield a fortune. But if you're stuck in a corner somewhere, even selling gold and jewels won't attract any customers!"
