Ye Xiaohan found nothing amiss, which only intensified her suspicions.
The elaborate scare tactics employed against them had not revealed a single flaw; the other party's methods were undeniably sophisticated. The more this was the case, the more vigilant she needed to be, ensuring she did not fall into the enemy's trap.
Until the other side revealed their true intentions, there could be no relaxation.
"Until we catch this trickster, we’ll switch rooms for sleeping," Ye Xiaohan said defiantly.
If one wanted to keep something secret, they must first ensure it was never done; there could be no perfect crime scene in this world.
Li Yang was at a loss for words; he was genuinely surprised by his sister-in-law's determination. He hadn't expected her to hold on so firmly.
"Alright then," Li Yang replied. "We don't need to change rooms; I'll just sleep in the next one over. If you notice anything unusual, just call for me, and I can rush over."
No matter what kind of ghost or monster it was, he was ready to face it. He couldn't let his sister-in-law confront these terrifying things alone.
"That works," Ye Xiaohan thought for a moment and agreed. "If something unexpected happens, having an extra person around could be helpful."
Considering that there might be strange occurrences but not wanting to raise too much alarm and alert the enemy, they agreed on a signal. If Ye Xiaohan encountered anything unusual, she would quietly toss a sandbag filled with sand.
Li Yang would be on standby in the adjacent room, ready to provide support if things went awry.
After discussing their plan, they each returned to their designated rooms, waiting for that moment to arrive.
With last night's experience behind her, Ye Xiaohan felt much bolder this time. She had been caught off guard by the sudden strange sounds before, which had startled her.
Tonight, she was fully alert and determined to unravel this mystery!
As time ticked away, Ye Xiaohan's heart gradually began to race. What worried her most now was what she would do if that sound didn’t appear tonight.
Just like before, it suddenly disappeared without any warning.
If that’s the case, they would have to wait a bit longer. She was eager to uncover the truth; otherwise, she wouldn’t be able to rest easy.
As the time approached when the strange sound had appeared last night, Ye Xiaohan focused intently, waiting for it to come again.
Sure enough, moments later, the eerie sound returned!
A piercing scream struck Ye Xiaohan's mind in an instant. She thought she was mentally prepared and could remain stable. However, being in the moment made her truly feel how chilling and terrifying that sound was.
She couldn’t fathom who could produce such a noise; it could easily serve as a voiceover for a horror movie. Was it someone professional?
While concentrating on listening to the strange sound, Ye Xiaohan tried to locate its source. Meanwhile, her mind began to race with bizarre thoughts, various odd ideas flashing through her head.
The strange sound was elusive, and Ye Xiaohan couldn’t pinpoint its origin.
This time, she learned from yesterday's experience and didn’t wander around the room. Taking advantage of the moonlight that illuminated the house brightly, Ye Xiaohan bent down and made her way to Liu Yang's room to check around.
As she moved slightly farther away from the source, the sound became a bit lighter. Using Liu Yang's room and the study as focal points, Ye Xiaohan circled around and indeed discovered some clues.
Although it was difficult to determine the exact location of the sound, it was clear that it originated from the area between Liu Yang's room and the study. Only in this area did the sounds seem loudest and clearest.
Having just left Liu Yang's room, there was really no place for anyone to hide inside, nor were there any suspicious spots. Ye Xiaohan threw a sandbag into Liu Yang's room where he would be sleeping tonight.
Almost immediately, Liu Yang climbed out of the window and stealthily approached Ye Xiaohan.
"Sister-in-law, did you find anything?" Liu Yang whispered as he leaned closer to her.
He had been unable to sleep, partly because he had something on his mind, and partly because the room he was staying in was not far from the study. After the strange noises began, he heard them too, making it even more impossible for him to relax.
Ye Xiaohan nodded at him and whispered, "The study is the only place we haven't checked yet. Let's go take a look. I'll go inside to check, and you keep watch at the door."
"Okay!" Liu Yang nodded.
The two of them quietly approached and pushed open the door to the study. In the stillness of the night, the creaking sound echoed ominously.
They tried to move as quietly as possible, not wanting to disturb anyone inside. Liu Yang casually grabbed a broom that was leaning against the door, holding it tightly while pressing his body against the doorframe, remaining completely still.
Ye Xiaohan stepped into the study alone. The strange noise had transformed from a scream into a moan, a sorrowful wailing that resonated eerily in the deep night.
The quiet study felt even more sinister with each cry. Ye Xiaohan felt a chill run down her neck, as if someone had breathed cold air right behind her ear.
Just based on this, they dared to come out and scare people? Ye Xiaohan scoffed inwardly; hadn't they ever seen someone who slept with a human model every night?
She remembered how she had once been obsessed with studying; her happiest moments were spent moving new "textbooks" for her anatomy classes. Trying to scare her was nothing short of a dream.
Ye Xiaohan searched around the study. As she expected, the sounds were clearer here. It seemed that the noises Liu Yang heard were indeed coming from this room.
However, the sound was too ethereal and intermittent. After searching around, Ye Xiaohan couldn't pinpoint its source.
As she continued her search, the strange noise stopped and did not resume.
She waited for quite some time before confirming that, just like last night, there would be no more strange sounds tonight.
Behind her came a rustling sound. Liu Yang peeked in from behind with half his body showing while holding the broom. "Sister-in-law, did... did 'that thing' leave?"
Ye Xiaohan ignored him, still surveying the study.
The moonlight outside was bright, streaming through the window. Although the study was lit, it didn't feel particularly dark, especially near the window where one could barely make out the words on the pages.
"Six Yang, did you notice if those strange sounds you heard every night were around the same time?"
Both last night and tonight, they started at roughly the same time and lasted about the same duration, ending around half an hour later.
Six Yang thought for a moment, scratching his head. "I didn’t pay attention to that. When I hear that sound, I get so anxious that who would bother to keep track of the time?"
It seemed it wouldn’t sound again tonight; it appeared they would have to wait until tomorrow.
Ye Xiaohan said, "Let’s go back to sleep. When that sound comes back tomorrow, we’ll come over. I want to see how he managed to escape from here."
The study had two windows; one was larger and lower, situated next to the door. The other was the one in front of Ye Xiaohan, located at the back, smaller and higher up.
Rather than a window, it resembled a ventilation opening.
To climb out of such a high window would likely require some sort of contortionist skill.
After a restless night, it was already quite late; the moon had shifted, and its light began to slant into the room. The area where Ye Xiaohan stood started to darken.
"Sister-in-law, let’s head back. Waiting here won’t yield anything," Six Yang said nervously, glancing around.
"Alright, let’s go," Ye Xiaohan replied, gathering her thoughts as she left the study.
The next day, after resting thoroughly during the day, Ye Xiaohan arrived early at Six Yang's room before dusk fell. As soon as the strange sound echoed again, she quickly met up with Six Yang outside the door, and together they stealthily approached the study.
"Stop! Don't move!"
This time, Ye Xiaohan did not hesitate. She dashed through two rows of bookshelves and shouted loudly as she reached the back.
In response, she found nothing but an empty wall before her.
This was impossible; the strange sounds had not ceased. Where could the trickster be hiding?
She lit the torch she had prepared and illuminated the study, revealing that there was indeed no one else inside.
Li Yang saw the light and rushed over to help. "Did you find anything?"
Ye Xiaohan shook her head, gesturing to the emptiness around her. "No, it seems they escaped again."
"That's impossible," Li Yang frowned. "I was keeping watch outside and didn't see anyone leave. With the moon so bright these past few nights, it's easy to spot someone. If there were anyone, at least I would have seen their shadow."
Ye Xiaohan was equally puzzled. "When I came over just now, I really didn't see anyone."
She murmured to herself, "People, shadows, moonlight..."
"Moonlight!" Ye Xiaohan couldn't help but exclaim in surprise as she repeated it. She extinguished the torch, closed her eyes for a moment to adjust to the sudden change in light, and then looked down at the blue bricks on the ground, following the moonlight.
