The sudden confession from Gu Bei left Ye Xiaohan a bit dazed, unsure of how to react.
"What are you talking about?" Ye Xiaohan stammered, feeling embarrassed. Didn't this person consider the surroundings? Couldn't he see the crowd of onlookers nearby?
She stole a glance and saw her subordinates sitting upright, their eyes fixed ahead as if they hadn't heard anything.
The more serious they were, the more shy Ye Xiaohan felt. If it had been a joke, something lighthearted, it would have been easier to brush off. But with such gravity in his tone, there was no way to escape the situation.
Gu Bei's attention was entirely focused on Ye Xiaohan, completely oblivious to the environment around them.
"Listen to me, I didn't just decide this on a whim; I'm sincere," Gu Bei said, cupping Ye Xiaohan's face in his hands. "I was foolish before, always together but never realizing my own feelings."
With her face held in Gu Bei's hands, Ye Xiaohan struggled but couldn't break free. She could only lean back as far as she could to avoid his gaze. She didn't want to discuss this topic now, especially not with so many people eavesdropping.
"Let's go back first; we can talk about this later," Ye Xiaohan said with a forced smile, though inside she was anything but calm—her heart raced.
However, Gu Bei was lost in the joy of surviving a crisis and paid no attention to the external factors. He simply wanted to express all his feelings to Ye Xiaohan.
"It wasn't until your recent incident that I realized how important you are to me," Gu Bei continued, his tone still tinged with fear. "When I saw all those bodies, I felt like my blood had frozen. I couldn't even bear to look at them."
The signs of a fierce battle indicated that things had been intense, and Gu Bei couldn't bear to think about what might have happened to Ye Xiaohan without any martial skills.
"I'm fine; I wasn't hurt at all," Ye Xiaohan sighed and reached out to pat his back reassuringly. "See? I'm right here, perfectly okay."
Gu Bei calmed down a bit as he looked at her and said, "It was then that I truly felt you are different."
"What do you mean by different?" Ye Xiaohan knew that as long as Gu Bei was unwilling to let go, she wouldn't be able to escape his embrace. So she resigned herself to it and allowed him to hold her.
Gu Bei replied earnestly, "I've lost many things before; it has caused me pain and sorrow. But when I thought you might be in danger, in that moment, I would rather accompany you into the abyss."
If there were no you in this world anymore, then my existence would hold no meaning at all.
Gu Bei did not speak, but Ye Xiaohan understood.
To say she was not moved would be a lie. In life, how many people are willing to regard you as more important than their own lives? This sincerity shone like a pure crystal, refracting light in the sunlight.
There was someone who cherished her, loved her, respected her, and placed all his feelings before her without reservation. Yet, considering the unknown future, her heart was in turmoil.
However, this bit of confusion could not stop the sweet sensation from spreading in her heart.
"Don't worry, I'm not a rabbit kept in a cage who can't live once it's out," Ye Xiaohan reassured Gu Bei. "I can take care of myself. Even if I encounter danger, I won't just give up; I can run pretty fast."
She struck a running pose, trying to lighten the mood for Gu Bei, hoping to ease his worries about her.
Gu Bei knew that Ye Xiaohan was putting on a brave face to comfort him.
After yesterday's crisis, she should have been exhausted. Even if she tried hard to hide it, the occasional flicker of fatigue could not be concealed.
Knowing she was worn out yet still forcing herself to cheer up for his sake made Gu Bei scold himself harshly, pushing those lingering fears aside.
At least he couldn't show it in front of Ye Xiaohan.
"Can you walk? Let's head back; you need a good sleep," Gu Bei pointed in a direction. "There will be a carriage at the foot of the mountain; just hold on a little longer."
Ye Xiaohan was merely fatigued and had not sustained any serious injuries. After replenishing food and water and resting for a while, she felt much better, though the lack of sleep from last night made her somewhat drowsy.
"Okay, let's hurry back," Ye Xiaohan replied. She still held no fondness for this forest and did not want to linger here any longer.
Gu Bei dismissed the team on the spot, allowing them to disperse while keeping only a few confidants with him.
With professional guides leading the way this time, they quickly exited the dense forest. When Ye Xiaohan looked back, she realized that this forest was not as vast as she had imagined. A significant part of why she had been trapped for so long last night was that she had not moved straight ahead.
Once you start wandering in circles inside, it could take ages to find your way out.
There was indeed a carriage waiting for them at the foot of the mountain. Upon seeing them approach, the driver hurried over to greet them.
“There’s no need for formalities, return to the Ye residence,” Gu Bei said, opting not to take Ye Xiaohan back to the General's mansion but instead escorting them to Ye Xiaohan's home.
Now was not the time to be explicit, no matter how much he wished to have them all by his side. He couldn’t do that, not unless he wanted Ye Xiaohan and the six siblings to be treated as glaring targets.
This was something that even Ye Xiaohan and Liu Yang could understand without any confusion. Seeing Gu Bei's low spirits, they offered him a few words of comfort.
Finally coming into contact with the soft cushions again, Ye Xiaohan felt that this was the whitest cotton she had ever encountered in her life.
“So soft, so comfortable, I don’t want to move at all; I just want to stick to this cushion,” Ye Xiaohan said as she adjusted her body and found a comfortable position.
Liu Yang chuckled, “It’s just a cushion, and you’re already wanting to stick to it. When we get home, there will be a soft bed and fluffy blankets and pillows. Which one would you choose?”
“Of course, I want them all!” At Liu Yang's mention, the drowsiness within Ye Xiaohan became even more pronounced; she just wanted to lie down.
Gu Bei noticed Ye Xiaohan’s eyelids drooping and felt a pang of sympathy as she stubbornly tried to stay awake. “Sleep now; I’ll wake you when we arrive.”
“Okay,” Ye Xiaohan replied, no longer forcing herself to stay awake. After all, they were all familiar faces; it didn’t matter: “I’ll take a nap. I was restless all night and hardly slept.”
As she lay down, she continued talking for a moment before fully relaxing. Soon after, she fell fast asleep.
Liu Yang leaned over to take a look and chuckled softly, “That was quick; she fell asleep immediately.”
“She’s too tired,” Gu Bei said as he adjusted the blanket, watching Ye Xiaohan’s peaceful sleeping face. He truly felt that she had returned to his side.
To avoid waking Ye Xiaohan, Gu Bei specifically instructed his subordinates to drive slowly. Liu Yang also closed his mouth and stopped talking. Although no one spoke, there was no sense of distance; instead, there was a warm feeling enveloping them.
At that moment, both people in the carriage felt that while Ye Xiaohan might seem like an ordinary person to others, within their family, it was precisely because of her presence that they had become who they were today.
Clearly, Ye Xiaohan was just one person, yet everyone in the Liu family revolved around her. Without Ye Xiaohan, the Liu family would instantly lose all its brightness and warmth.
Just like yesterday, a chill hung in the air.
Gu Bei reached out and gently tucked a stray lock of hair back on Ye Xiaohan's face.
From now on, he would not allow anyone to touch a single strand of Ye Xiaohan's hair!
The carriage did not stop outside the residence but instead entered through a side gate, heading straight into the courtyard.
Liuyang jumped down from the carriage first and lifted the curtain.
Then, Gu Bei carefully jumped down from the carriage, cradling the still-sleeping Ye Xiaohan in his arms, making sure not to wake her.
He carried her back to the room and laid her on the bed, allowing her to continue sleeping.
Gu Bei instructed that no one should disturb her: "Let her sleep for now. If anything comes up, Liuyang, you handle it first."
"Big Brother, I know what to do without you," Liuyang replied as he caught hold of Liuqi, who was peeking around the door, trying to find an opportunity to sneak in. "Did you hear that? You're not allowed to disturb Sister-in-law."
Liuqi looked at the closed door with disappointment. "I won't disturb her; I just want to see her."
"No way! You always end up giggling by yourself; you'll wake Sister-in-law!" Liuyang was unyielding as he carried away the reluctant Liuqi, who squirmed in his grasp.
