For the first time, she was able to sleep soundly, especially after being injured and in urgent need of physical recovery. Ye Xiaohan almost fell into a coma-like slumber.
In fact, when she woke up again, it was not the second morning as she had thought, but rather the evening of the second day.
Ye Xiaohan sat up and surveyed her surroundings. She found herself in a military tent, simple and sturdy, very much in line with military style. To her surprise, the ground was covered with two thick layers of felt serving as a carpet.
She wasn't sure if this was standard in the military, but she had to admit that this peculiar detail made her feel quite comfortable.
A dry environment always lifted one’s spirits.
"Gurgle, gurgle."
A rumbling sound came from her stomach. Ye Xiaohan patted her belly, feeling as if she were about to digest her own stomach lining from hunger.
Just as she was about to get out of bed to find something to eat, the heavy door curtain of the tent was lifted, and two people walked in from outside.
"Oh, the lady is awake."
One of them noticed Ye Xiaohan sitting up and smiled at the other person. "Sun Military Doctor, it seems your work here is done."
The other person replied with a grin, "How can it be done? Now that she's awake, I have even more to do!"
Ye Xiaohan examined the two individuals before her. One was dressed in ordinary civilian clothes with light armor worn over it. The other wore standard soldier attire and carried a medical kit on his back.
The one with the medical kit was naturally the Military Doctor. As for the other?
From his demeanor and behavior, he seemed less like a soldier and more like a refined gentleman. Even standing in a military camp, he didn’t appear to be there for battle; instead, he gave off an impression that he might suddenly recite poetry or compose verses at any moment.
Logically speaking, someone like him would seem out of place in a military camp. However, curiously enough, he blended the sternness of the army with his own elegance seamlessly.
It seemed as if he was meant to be here all along, existing from the very beginning.
That was the aura forged through years of battle.
Ye Xiaohan quietly concluded in her heart that this person was likely the military advisor brought by Gu Bei, simply referred to as the strategist.
Sure enough, the man quickly introduced himself: "Madam, there's no need to panic. I am the military strategist accompanying the troops this time, Shen Ru. This is Doctor Sun, the military doctor."
"Hello," Ye Xiaohan said as she stood up, contemplating whether she should bow or something similar.
Before she could steady herself, Doctor Sun hurriedly interrupted, "Miss Ye, your body hasn't fully recovered yet. You need to rest well; it's better for you to lie down! If you need anything, just let us know. The soldiers are more than willing to serve you."
Shen Ru smiled and added, "The madam saved the general; the soldiers are immensely grateful and are looking forward to being at your service."
He placed what he was holding on the table and opened the top lid. A fragrant aroma of rice wafted through the air. It turned out he had brought in a food box filled to the brim with dishes.
"Gululu!" As Ye Xiaohan caught a whiff of the delicious scent, her body instinctively produced a large amount of saliva, making her mouth water.
She swallowed hard, trying her best not to rush over but instead walked calmly to the table.
"These are all dishes ordered by the general; they are all your favorites," Shen Ru said as he took out bowls and chopsticks from the food box and set them on the table.
Ye Xiaohan took a moment to freshen up and was surprised by Shen Ru's words: "Gu Bei has already woken up?"
This body’s constitution was remarkably good. Based on Ye Xiaohan's previous estimates, he would have needed at least two or three days of deep sleep before waking up. This was assuming everything went smoothly without any infections or fevers.
Upon hearing this, Shen Ru displayed a subtle expression on his face, making it difficult to discern whether he wanted to laugh or was feeling sorrowful. Ye Xiaohan looked puzzled for a moment before glancing at Doctor Sun, who wore a similar expression.
What had happened while she was unconscious?
However, judging by their performance, it shouldn't be particularly difficult, or perhaps there was an issue with Gu Bei; otherwise, they would only be sad, not acting like this.
Shen Ru quickly concealed that expression, naturally as if nothing had happened, and smiled at Ye Xiaohan, saying, "These matters will naturally be known once the lady goes out. Let's eat first. If the general finds out that his subordinate let the lady go hungry, he will definitely punish me according to military law."
He deliberately shrank his neck, pretending to be afraid, but his expression remained unchanged. This elicited a chuckle from the nearby Sun Military Doctor.
It was only then that Ye Xiaohan realized that Shen Ru's way of addressing her seemed somewhat...
"Shen Strategist, you can just call me by my name. That... it's a bit inappropriate." Although Ye Xiaohan had always been regarded as Gu Bei's wife while in the countryside, it had been a reluctant situation.
Moreover, Gu Bei was different now; ever since they entered the capital, their 'marital' relationship had quietly faded under Ye Xiaohan's deliberate efforts to downplay it.
Hearing Shen Ru suddenly refer to her as 'lady' made her feel a bit shy.
However, Shen Ru insisted on not changing his address and smiled, "Since the general has recognized you as his person, you are our lady. There's no need to feel shy; marriage is a matter of fate; there's no need to be embarrassed."
"Heh heh." Ye Xiaohan was at a loss for words. Moreover, in their brief interactions, she could clearly sense that Shen Ru's personality was likely not as refined as it appeared but rather more stubborn—definitely not someone who would easily give up on what he had decided.
Realizing that any argument would be futile, Ye Xiaohan simply closed her mouth and focused on eating; she was truly on the verge of starving.
Sun Military Doctor suggested giving Ye Xiaohan a follow-up examination but was refused. Ye Xiaohan felt it unnecessary; she had already checked herself and found only some external injuries that she could treat on her own. Sun Military Doctor thought Ye Xiaohan was reluctant to let him examine her due to gender differences.
Regardless of the misunderstanding, in the end, Sun Military Doctor left some medicine and gave Ye Xiaohan a few instructions before not insisting further.
After finishing her meal, Ye Xiaohan went out to find Gu Bei and finally understood the subtle expressions on Shen Ru's and Sun Military Doctor's faces.
Gu Bei had only rested for an hour after being bandaged yesterday. After that, he insisted on working despite his injuries, striving to understand and organize the military intelligence he had missed in the shortest time possible.
"So you've been working without rest since yesterday?" Ye Xiaohan said angrily. "Have you forgotten that you almost died out there? Look at yourself; is there even a single spot on you that's intact?"
Gu Bei's injuries could only be described as being covered in bruises, and that was no exaggeration.
"Don't be angry," Gu Bei said as he set down the case files and looked up at Ye Xiaohan. "I feel much better already; it's not a big deal. Besides, we have the Military Doctor here, so everything will be fine."
"The wounds are deep enough to see bone, there's inflammation, and he's lost a lot of blood. If that's not serious, then what do you consider serious?" Ye Xiaohan replied sternly, her expression cold. She understood that Gu Bei was worried about larger matters, but he couldn't keep putting his body through this kind of strain. He was still in critical condition; a normal person should be lying in bed without moving.
Seeing that she was genuinely upset, Gu Bei's confidence immediately waned. However, what he was doing was necessary; there could be no delays.
"Xiao Han, I know you're concerned about me," Gu Bei said cautiously but firmly. "But I have more important things I need to do right now."
Ye Xiaohan fixed her gaze on Gu Bei's eyes and asked, "Is it more important than your life?"
Gu Bei instinctively wanted to nod in agreement but hesitated when he met Ye Xiaohan's gaze. Suddenly struck by a realization, he swallowed that response and said, "It's equally important."
His life was not just about bearing the weight of his responsibilities to his country; it had taken on new meanings. He wanted to continue living and share longer days with those he cared about.
Ye Xiaohan couldn't fully grasp the depth of his hidden feelings, but the determination in Gu Bei's eyes made her realize that this matter was already settled and would not change.
Faced with such resolve from Gu Bei, Ye Xiaohan found herself unable to voice any objections. Although she was deeply worried about his health, she also understood that a person's importance extended beyond just their physical well-being.
