Accompanied by a voice, a figure walked in, revealing itself to be Third Prince Murong Jing.
"Step aside!"
Murong Jing's gaze swept over Grandma Hua, who shivered and instinctively loosened her grip, lowering her head as she retreated to the side.
Oh dear, why is this ancestor here! If I cross paths with him, life will be difficult from now on!
Grandma Hua dared not defy Murong Jing's command. Although they were both nobles, offending Shangyang Princess would only result in a few scoldings. However, crossing Murong Jing could lead to being beaten half to death right in front of the Queen.
"Prince, what brings you here?" The Queen, known for her indulgent nature towards her son, showed no anger at Murong Jing reprimanding a courtier in her palace. Instead, she waved him over.
"Come here and let Mother Empress have a look at you," the Queen chided. "Where have you been playing lately? You haven't come to visit Mother Empress. Unfilial child, I raised you for nothing."
Though her words were stern, her face remained adorned with a smile, showing no signs of displeasure.
Ye Xiaohan finally understood how Murong Cheng had developed his personality; with such a doting mother around, it was hard not to change.
Shangyang Princess still held an orange in her hand and glared at Murong Jing. "Brother, why are you bothering me! Go away; I want to teach this woman a lesson!"
"On what grounds?" Murong Jing towered over Shangyang Princess, looking down at her.
Shangyang Princess paused for a moment and asked, "What do you mean by 'on what grounds'?"
"Heh heh." Murong Jing squeezed out a sound through his teeth to mock her.
He had learned this from Ye Xiaohan. After seeing Ye Xiaohan do it and understanding the underlying meaning, the ever-curious Murong Jing quickly adopted it as his catchphrase.
Especially when seeing those who had been mocked by him, completely unaware that they were being ridiculed in front of others, still trying to curry favor with him, Murong Jing found it quite amusing.
"I, what right do you have to teach her a lesson?" Murong Jing poked the forehead of Shangyang Princess with a finger and said, "You are neither her superior nor her creditor; what gives you the right to discipline her?"
Shangyang Princess covered her forehead with one hand while using the other, which held an orange, to push Murong Jing away forcefully. "Why can't I teach her a lesson? She seduced General Gu, wanting to marry into the Gu Family and scheme for their status and inheritance. Isn't that reason enough?"
Ye Xiaohan looked at the increasingly imaginative Shangyang Princess in disbelief, realizing she could no longer keep up with her wild thoughts.
In a short span of time, she had transformed from a smiling tavern girl into a scheming and malicious woman. Perhaps soon she would become a great villain aiming to conquer Earth and rule the universe.
Murong Jing scoffed, "What identity do you have to teach her on behalf of Gu Bei and the Gu Family? What are you to Gu Bei? A foolish princess who wanted to marry him but was publicly rejected?"
"Brother!" Shangyang Princess felt humiliated but couldn't retort because she truly had no connection with Gu Bei.
Ye Xiaohan also thought Murong Jing's behavior was somewhat inappropriate; treating a teenage girl like this was akin to tearing open her wounds in a bloody manner.
Even the usually indulgent Queen couldn't help but say, "Prince, how can you speak to your princess like that? She is already very sad; as her brother, you should care for her instead of mocking her."
Murong Jing continued to poke Shangyang Princess's forehead and harshly said, "Matters of the heart are not something outsiders can interfere with. Since Gu Bei has chosen Miss Ye, that is between them. No matter what decisions they make, it is not your place to intervene."
He held onto the struggling Shangyang Princess who tried to escape and added, "Only you, foolish girl, would be publicly rejected and still refuse to repent, insisting on stumbling down an impossible path. Is that not brainless? Come on, let your brother shake your head and see what nonsense is inside!"
"Let go of me! Brother, you are so annoying!" Shangyang Princess pushed Murong Jing away with all her might and ran over to the Queen's side, throwing herself into her embrace while complaining pitifully. "Mother Empress, look! Brother is actually siding with outsiders! He even hit me!"
The Queen gently rubbed Shangyang Princess's forehead where Murong Jing had poked it hard enough to leave a red mark.
"Prince, this is too much! How can you bully your sister like this?" The Queen scolded Murong Jing lightly before turning to comfort Shangyang Princess. "There, there, it doesn't hurt anymore. Mother Empress will call Zhang Taiyi to take a look at you."
The Queen instructed the Courtier to send a message to the Imperial Physician.
Ye Xiaohan was left dumbfounded; just a few pokes and they needed to summon the physician? This was too exaggerated. Her gaze subtly wandered around the room, and the situation grew increasingly bizarre.
She had no idea how Murong Cheng had arrived, but it seemed he would stand on her side. Ever since he showed up, the atmosphere had shifted dramatically, transforming from a palace intrigue into a family comedy.
Watching the Queen handle the situation with such familiarity, it was clear that Murong Jing and Shangyang Princess must have quarreled frequently, to the point where the Queen had grown accustomed to their way of interacting.
What a peculiar family.
Regardless, all her hopes were now pinned on Murong Jing. She hoped that the Queen would take her precious son into consideration and stop making things difficult for her.
Ye Xiaohan glanced at Murong Jing and secretly made a gesture of plea. Murong Jing raised an eyebrow in response, as if agreeing to help.
Murong Jing looked at Shangyang Princess, who was seeking comfort in the Queen's embrace, and said, "What good does it do you to act tough in front of Mother Empress? You can't even say a word in front of Gu Bei. You might as well give up; Gu Bei has already made his rejection clear. No matter what you do, he won't be swayed. Save your efforts."
"Mind your own business! I can do whatever I want! I like General Gu and I want to marry him!"
Shangyang Princess had been doused with cold water throughout the conversation. Furious, she disregarded even the Queen's comfort, sprang up from the Beauty Couch, and hurried outside, desperate not to see her treacherous brother again.
"Shangyang! Shangyang!" The Queen called out after her, but Shangyang Princess had already disappeared from sight. The Queen could only instruct the Courtier to chase after her quickly.
Ye Xiaohan kept her head down, pretending she saw nothing and heard nothing.
The Queen turned back to Murong Jing with a complaint: "You know your sister's feelings yet you deliberately put her down? What kind of brother are you? It's unacceptable!"
"Don't mind her," Murong Jing replied, glancing at the swaying beaded curtain. "The more attention you give her, the more dramatic she becomes. Let her calm down on her own."
He smiled broadly as he bowed to the Queen, saying, "Son comes to pay respects to Mother Empress, wishing Mother Empress good health."
"Good, well done!" The Queen immediately forgot about Murong Jing's previous misdeeds and continued to chat with her, all smiles.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Murong Jing seemingly casually glanced at Ye Xiaohan and said to the Queen, "Mother Empress, this person shouldn't stay in the palace for too long. It would be better to send her back soon to avoid idle gossip that could lead to trouble."
Only then did the Queen remember that Ye Xiaohan was still standing beside her. She didn't harbor much dislike for Ye Xiaohan; it was mainly due to the relationship with the Shangyang Princess. Now that the Shangyang Princess was gone, she couldn't be bothered to make things difficult for her anymore.
Moreover, judging by Ye Xiaohan's earlier behavior, it seemed that breaking up her and Gu Bei wouldn't be as simple as they had previously thought. This matter would require careful consideration.
Additionally, the Queen was excessively fond of Murong Cheng and rarely denied any of his requests. Given Murong Cheng's current situation, the Queen immediately agreed.
"That works too. There are too many people in the palace, and it wouldn't be good if word got out," the Queen said. "I'll find someone to escort her out."
Just as the Queen was about to call for someone, Murong Jing interjected, "Mother Empress doesn't need to go through so much trouble. When Son leaves later, he can take her out with him."
"That works. Then Prince can see her off," the Queen readily agreed. Her cheerful demeanor made Ye Xiaohan wonder if the Queen had ever felt anything negative about Murong Jing.
However, what was currently criticized about the Queen had become Ye Xiaohan's shield; as long as she stayed close to Murong Jing, she was temporarily safe!
Meanwhile, Gu Bei was still trapped in the Imperial Study, listening to the Emperor's incessant chatter.
