Upon hearing the report from her subordinate that the Shangyang Princess had been found, several people quickly inquired about the location and urged him to lead the way.
"Is the princess alright? Did those ruffians hurt her?" This was the question on everyone's mind.
The subordinate hesitated for a moment before replying, "Your Highness is safe and sound. Please rest assured."
However, the brief hesitation from the subordinate raised some concerns. Yet, time was too pressing to ask for details. Although he claimed she was unharmed, his expression seemed somewhat peculiar.
It wasn't until they saw the Shangyang Princess with their own eyes that they understood the source of his subtle expression.
The Shangyang Princess was sitting by the roadside, holding a candied hawthorn stick in her hand, her face showing no signs of fear; instead, she appeared quite happy.
"Princess! That's wonderful! You're safe!" A palace maid rushed forward to embrace the Shangyang Princess, laughing and crying at the same time.
The Shangyang Princess patted her back and said, "Why are you crying again? Stop it, stop it! You're going to drive me crazy."
As everyone approached to examine her closely, they confirmed that she really was uninjured. While they felt relieved, confusion began to set in.
"Princess, how did you escape? Those ruffians..." Ye Xiaohan couldn't help but ask. The Shangyang Princess had no martial skills; how had she managed to get away from them?
Before she could finish her question, the Shangyang Princess caught sight of Gu Bei beside her. She broke free from the palace maid and lunged straight toward Gu Bei.
With a joyful expression, the Shangyang Princess exclaimed, "I knew you must like me too! You came to rescue me, which means you still have feelings for me!"
Ye Xiaohan barely had time to react before she saw the princess nearly tackle Gu Bei. If he dodged, the Shangyang Princess would fall flat on the ground. He had no choice but to extend his hand and catch her first.
Murong Jing arrived at some point as well and laughed upon seeing this scene. "So coming to rescue you means he likes you? Then what about all of us here? Does that mean we all like you too?"
"If you don't want to speak, no one will think you're mute!" The Shangyang Princess couldn't reach Gu Bei and instead clung to his arm. She turned angrily toward Murong Jing and said, "I don't need your affection! I'd be happier if you just stayed out of my sight!"
Gu Bei pulled several times, but the Shangyang Princess held on tightly. Unless he tore her away, there was nothing he could do.
He felt a bit anxious; how could a princess be so publicly affectionate with a man? Especially when he caught Ye Xiaohan's sidelong glance, Gu Bei became even more flustered.
If Ye Xiaohan got angry because of this, he would be in big trouble!
Everyone present had their own thoughts, but the only one truly happy was the Shangyang Princess.
"You don't need to be shy; I like you too!" The Shangyang Princess tilted her head back, her eyes filled with joy. "Ever since you saved me, my heart has been set on you. I no longer like anyone else."
Gu Bei quickly glanced at Ye Xiaohan and indeed saw that familiar half-smile on her face. Whenever Ye Xiaohan wore that expression, it meant trouble for him.
"Your Highness, please don't say such things. I have never saved you!" Gu Bei hurriedly tried to stop the Shangyang Princess while also clarifying his feelings to Ye Xiaohan. "I already have someone I care about; please show some restraint!"
The Shangyang Princess turned and glared at Ye Xiaohan. "You've been deceived! This woman doesn't truly like you; she only wants the Gu Family's inheritance and your status! If it weren't for her, you wouldn't have had that falling out with Sister Liu. She just wants to push everyone away from you so she can have you all to herself!"
"Sister Liu?" Ye Xiaohan's mind immediately conjured up an annoying figure. She hoped it wasn't Liu Susu causing trouble again!
The Shangyang Princess pointed at Ye Xiaohan and scolded, "Do you think no one knows about the bad things you've done? There's no wall that doesn't let the wind through. You deliberately spoke ill of Sister Liu in front of General Gu, creating a rift between them, and now you're trying to ruin us! How many bad things have you said about me in front of General Gu?"
"I haven't mentioned a single word!" Who has time to remember you all day long?
Ye Xiaohan tried to entice her into revealing Sister Liu's identity. "Why do you only believe Sister Liu's side of the story and not mine? Is it just because she's the chancellor's daughter while I'm just a commoner?"
"This has nothing to do with status!" The Shangyang Princess declared with righteous indignation. "Sister Liu grew up with me; she wouldn't lie to me! Even if she weren't Liu Chancellor's daughter, I would still trust her!"
Very well, Ye Xiaohan confirmed once again that it was indeed Liu Susu involved.
It seemed that this time the Shangyang Princess came to stir up trouble at the tavern, likely incited by Liu Susu. A sheltered princess like her clearly didn't go out much based on her current behavior.
If it weren't for Liu Susu, she probably wouldn't have been able to sneak in so smoothly.
Ye Xiaohan silently opened the black notebook in his mind and added a new entry on the page for Liu Susu.
Gu Bei was still struggling to break free from Shangyang Princess, while Murong Jing stood by with her arms crossed, showing no intention of helping.
"Your Highness, if someone saves you, that person is someone you should like. Therefore, you should appreciate the one who rescued you from those thugs."
Ye Xiaohan flipped to another page in his mental notebook, contemplating whether he should make a note about Shangyang Princess if she didn't let Gu Bei go soon.
Everyone's gaze turned to the subordinate who had led them here. Under several piercing stares, he was so frightened that cold sweat began to form.
He was just a supervising officer; any of these people were not someone he could afford to offend.
So, he quickly clarified, "It wasn't me! When we found the princess, she was alone, and there were no suspicious individuals around her."
"Eh?"
Everyone was taken aback and looked at Shangyang Princess.
Shangyang Princess was confused by their stares. "What are you looking at me for? I was saved by General Gu! He was amazing; he drove all those nasty thugs away in no time."
Thinking about how those thugs had fled in a panic made her feel elated, and her gaze toward Gu Bei became even more admiring!
The crowd shifted their attention to Gu Bei, who met their eyes. "I only stepped out a little before all of you. This maid has been trailing behind me intermittently; she can confirm that I never encountered the princess."
They hadn't chased for long, and there hadn't been enough time to rescue the princess. Besides, Gu Bei wasn't insane; after saving the princess, he wouldn't pretend he hadn't found her and continue wandering around like a headless chicken.
However, judging by Shangyang Princess's expression, it didn't seem like she was lying, and the fact that she had been rescued was undeniable.
"Could there be two Gu Bei?"
Ye Xiaohan quickly dismissed the thought. Gu Bei's background was well-known; he had no twin brother. Even his malicious younger brother only bore a slight resemblance, not enough to make them indistinguishable.
Gu Bei's expression grew serious; this matter was significant and needed clarification.
"Your Highness, can you recall what the person who saved you looked like?" By identifying his appearance, they could soon begin a search throughout the capital.
The Shangyang Princess shyly replied, "How annoying! It was clearly you who saved me, so why hide it? I already know that I like you. It was I who asked Mother Empress for help in arranging my marriage!"
Her bold statement surprised everyone present. Ye Xiaohan hadn't expected to encounter such a forward woman in this era, while others were taken aback that an unmarried lady would speak so shamelessly. The palace maids nearby were anxious, repeatedly signaling to the Shangyang Princess and whispering reminders.
Gu Bei quickly regained his composure; he had seen enough of the world not to be intimidated by a woman's words.
"Your Highness, this concerns your safety. Please think carefully and describe the person's appearance to us." Gu Bei reiterated, "The person who saved you is not me; I have been with everyone else and did not encounter you along the way."
Now it was the Shangyang Princess's turn to be shocked. She stared at Gu Bei for a moment before shifting her gaze among the others present.
Everyone nodded affirmatively. The palace maids kept shaking their heads in confirmation, saying, "Princess, it's true. I have been following closely behind and did not see you!"
"How could that be?" The Shangyang Princess looked dejected. "That person was so skilled; aside from General Gu, could there be anyone else? No wonder he wore a mask—what a fraud!"
