"What is that?"
The burly man aimed his Laser Gun at the trembling, frail boy on the ground while asking another person about the dropped item.
"It's a communicator from the d Zone. No doubt about it; its owner is in the d Zone."
As soon as he finished speaking, the armed man kicked the curled-up figure on the ground. "Get inside; you must come out in two hours."
"Ugh—"
Suppressing a pained groan, the figure on the ground hurriedly grabbed the Metallic Texture communicator and crawled toward the Sentinel entrance.
Just as she was about to pass by the third stationed guard, a voice called out.
"Stop—"
Yan Yan's heart tightened suddenly. Holding her breath and focusing, she turned around with a shaky demeanor, her right hand behind her back flashing with cold light for an instant.
The dark gleam that flickered in her pupils vanished in that moment of turning.
"Input your identity information."
"Beep—"
"d Zone citizen identity information entry complete. Please leave the E Zone within two hours."
With the prompt completed, the heavy stone that had been hanging over her heart eased slightly.
The alarm that had been sounding on her wrist since entering the E Zone stopped after her identity information was successfully recorded.
"What are you looking at? Hurry up and get lost!"
"I'm... I'm sorry!"
Retracting her gaze from scanning around, the frail figure quickly ran off into the distance.
Once she was far from the first Sentinel, hidden in a dark alley's blind spot, Yan Yan took out the Metallic Texture communicator again. The cold feel of it darkened her eyes.
When she initially picked him up out of kindness, it wasn't solely to repay his one act of kindness; the communicator was her true objective. His silent departure indeed caused some setbacks in her plans, but with the communicator in hand, she could still carry out certain steps.
After waiting in the shadows for a few minutes, a dark figure rushed toward her.
"Sister Two, it's me."
Uncle Li's hoarse voice rang out.
In the darkness, Uncle Li's throat was completely ruined by the toxic air, his voice raspy and unpleasant. With the faint light, Yan Yan could only make out a shadowy figure, gaunt and emaciated.
"Uncle Li, what did you find out?"
"After locating them, Liu Yufeng and Yan Siming's coordinates are 59, 96, 87. They have been there without moving for a while. Also, regarding the communicator code you brought last time, I found out it belongs to a convict named Qin Huai from E Zone."
"Uncle Li, please continue to track down Qin Huai's whereabouts. I suspect he is part of the Shadow Organization. I accidentally saw a message on his communicator that contained the contact number of the Shadow Organization's liaison. Be sure to inform me if you find anything. Also, have you made any progress in tracking Master Zhu Liang?"
"Master Zhu Liang was last seen at a secret underground research facility in E Zone, but after that, there has been no news. Sister Two, that underground facility is too dangerous. Even if it is now abandoned, I advise against you going there; the radiation is too strong. There are no signs of life within five kilometers, and the contamination is severe. Given your current health condition, it's not advisable to investigate. If you're worried, please let me handle this."
"Uncle Li, you've already done enough for us sisters. Now, after you finish your current tasks, please leave E Zone as soon as possible; it's about to collapse."
"What? Collapse?!—"
"Yes, the environmental pressure has reached its limit and will soon collapse. A riot is inevitable then. So in tracking down Qin Huai's whereabouts, if there is no progress within a week, please abandon the mission and leave immediately. I've found a property for you in the district and submitted your application for district citizenship; it should be approved within this week. Therefore, regardless of how things progress within this week, you must leave."
"Sister Two! The elder sister's condition is still uncertain; how can you waste resources on me? How will I face Mr. and Mrs. Nine Springs—please Sister Two and elder sister, take care of yourselves."
The choked voice suppressed in his throat brought tears to the elderly man's face hidden in the darkness.
"Uncle Li, thank you. I'm leaving now; please take care of yourself."
Having obtained the necessary information, she quickly turned to leave.
Familiar with navigating through the dark streets and alleys, she walked cautiously while orienting herself closer to the specified coordinates.
"Yan Siming, you beast! You can't even spare your own son—"
A woman's sharp curses suddenly pierced her ears. Yan Yan halted her steps and pressed herself against the edge of a dilapidated shelter as she watched two disheveled and injured figures arguing inside.
"Ah—my Langlang! Yan Siming, how could you give him to that pervert Ji Yang! Our Langlang is still so young!"
"Shut up, you Bitch, give it back! Didn't you sell your own daughter to a place like Liuying Street?" Yan Siming spat angrily at the dirt on the floor, the stench of the woman nearby making him recoil. He propped up one good leg and kicked the screaming woman over, shouting, "Think of a way to get out of here! If we stay any longer, none of us will survive."
"Get out? What’s the point of going out! My Langlang—"
The woman who had been kicked over struggled to move her upper body, trying to get up, but her paralyzed lower half left her only able to shift her head slightly.
"Hmph—if you didn't want to get out, why did you sell Yueyue? You just wanted to climb up the ranks here, but they didn't even look at her. You wasted an opportunity; it's all your fault!"
Yan Siming's expression turned fierce, and the deep wound on his forehead split open again, dark red blood trickling down his twisted face. "If it weren't for your insistence on giving E Zone's local tyrant Yueyue, we wouldn't have ended up like this."
He stood at an angle; despite having just kicked the woman with all his strength, it couldn't hide the fact that his other leg was already useless. "You should have listened to me from the start. If we had sent Yueyue to someone in d Zone, maybe we could have made it there. Even if we ended up in d Zone, it would be better than this."
Breathing weakly, his body, which had been abused for so long, reached its limit and collapsed onto the ground. Exposed to the light, one of his eye sockets was empty.
The woman who had been kicked down struggled several times to get up, but her paralyzed body refused to obey her commands. She could only lift her head with great difficulty and hissed, "If it weren't for you getting caught with dirt on your hands, would we have fallen this low?"
"Fallen this low? Hahaha— I, Yan Siming, was supposed to soar high and enjoy wealth in S Zone, and now I'm brought down by you, you Bitch, and you still blame me?"
"Yan Siming! What do you mean it's my fault?! Don't think I don't know what you've done—Yan Sicheng's death, Lu Huifang's death; do you dare say you're not involved? You didn't even touch Yan Sicheng's company?"
"Hmph! I did that for the greater good. You understand nothing! If you hadn't leaked information about Strict Language to that pervert Ji Yang, I wouldn't have had to resort to such extreme measures and leave behind evidence. Maybe I could have taken a more roundabout way to get everything without risking it all and ending up like this!" (To be continued.)
