The Wei Scholar felt a chill run down his spine at the thought of what awaited him after leaving the Hu Family, and he immediately began to plead for mercy, hoping to escape disaster.
Xiu'er, who had been pale and trembling in the corner, remained silent until she heard the Wei Scholar's words. Her face flushed with excitement as she pointed at him in disbelief and questioned, "Are you even human? Who was it that said they would support me as the legitimate wife after the young lady died? Who said that once the young lady was gone, I would inherit everything from the Hu Family and bear you another child... Wasn't that you? You heartless wretch! I poured my heart out to you, and this is how you repay me?"
"You... don't spout nonsense! What kind of person do you think I am? How could I say such things to you?" The Wei Scholar vehemently denied it, a flicker of malice crossing his eyes.
"My lady, I am pregnant," Xiu'er suddenly knelt down and declared, shocking everyone. No, Qing Luan was so stunned she felt like she might burst into laughter.
Linglong smiled and gently asked, "Oh, congratulations!"
"My lady, Xiu'er was wrong, but the child in my womb is your son-in-law's—it's the little master's own brother," Xiu'er knelt there, but her eyes were filled with cunning calculations.
"So what?" Linglong asked nonchalantly.
"I am willing to serve you like a beast in return for your kindness. Please, my lady, allow me to give birth to this child!" Xiu'er cried out in desperation. She understood Hu Linglong's nature and knew that if she begged like this, Linglong would surely soften her heart.
Both Hu Linglong and Qing Luan saw through Xiu'er's schemes. After exchanging glances, Qing Luan signaled her to remain silent and then looked at the kneeling Xiu'er with an inscrutable expression. "Xiu'er, your contract of servitude is still with the Hu Family, isn't it?"
Upon hearing this, Xiu'er's expression changed dramatically as panic flashed in her eyes. She lowered herself further and replied, "I have been with the Hu Family since childhood; naturally, my contract is with them."
"Then do you think the child born will be considered a child of the Scholar or a servant of the Hu Family?" Qing Luan asked lightly while curling her fingers in a teasing manner.
"My son cannot be a servant!" The Wei Scholar could no longer contain himself and jumped up angrily. "I am a Scholar! A Scholar! Don't you all know that?"
Watching the agitated Wei Scholar, Qing Luan found it amusing. He was so naively foolish that he thought being a Scholar could grant him everything. "So what do you think your son should be?"
"He is Rui'er’s younger brother. Whatever Rui'er is, he should be too!" He held his head high, stating it as if it were a matter of course.
Upon hearing his words, Xiu'er couldn't help but smile lightly. This was exactly what she wanted; as long as the child grew up, she would still have a chance to change things.
Qing Luan observed their little secret with keen interest, like a cat playing with a dying mouse—letting it go only to catch it again, teasing it with a glimmer of hope before dragging it back into despair. "Rui'er will inherit everything from the Hu Family and become a humble merchant. Don’t you think it would be a disgrace for your son to become a merchant?" Her smile was sweet yet laced with hidden daggers, and watching the clown jump around truly felt like a stain on her eyes.
At her question, Wei Scholar's expression darkened, and he gritted his teeth. "Brothers should share both blessings and hardships!" He didn't want to face death alone!
