"Who said there is no owner here?" Qing Luan glared, displeased. "This place already has an owner. From today on, you are not allowed to hunt in these mountains. Otherwise, you'll regret it!" She felt it was unfair that she, as the owner, had gained nothing while someone else had taken advantage of the situation.
"An owner?" Xuanyuan Rui murmured in confusion, asking curiously, "Did someone buy this mountain?" Generally, the mountains here were ownerless; the locals relied on the sea for their livelihood and rarely valued the resources within the mountains. Few were skilled in combat, and even fewer hunted, which was why he had come here without a second thought.
"Yes, we came up here with the owner's permission," Qing Luan said defiantly. "If you sneak up here to hunt and my master finds out, you'll definitely have to pay for it. You should leave quickly!"
Seeing her insistently wanting him to leave, he noticed that the young man standing behind her was clearly older than him but showed respect towards this little girl. Their relationship seemed complicated—this mountain must be related to her! He speculated and grew curious about this headstrong girl, deciding to continue engaging with her.
"I came up here to hunt, but the prey ran into your arms. You think it's fair to ask me for compensation?" He met her urgent black eyes with a cheeky grin. "Also, my Little Wolf finally caught a live prey only for you to take it away. Shouldn't I ask you for compensation?"
"What?" Qing Luan jumped at his words, nearly letting the little creature in her arms slip away. It also caught the attention of Little Wolf squatting nearby, prompting Qing Luan to hold it tighter to prevent it from being snatched by the eager Wolfdog beside them. "You want me to pay you? Are you out of your mind? You came onto my mountain without my permission, stole my prey, and now you want me to compensate you? Don't think you can bully me just because of some supposed status; I will never back down!"
A-Song watched as the young lady stomped her feet, his expression darkening with confusion. The lady he knew always acted like a little adult; even the village chief listened to her. Sometimes they would secretly say she didn’t seem like a child at all—she was too composed and calm. But now, facing this unfamiliar boy, she was anything but calm; she was throwing a tantrum like a child, which surprised him—she looked cute and mischievous.
"You bought this mountain?" Xuanyuan Rui was astonished. He had suspected that this mountain was connected to her but never imagined that a girl in her teens could purchase such an unwanted mountain rich in resources. Such insight was rare among ordinary people, which only intensified his curiosity about her.
"Is that not allowed?" The words slipped out before Qing Luan could stop herself. She suddenly realized how childish she sounded arguing with a boy barely older than herself and shot him an angry glare before turning back. "A-Song, let's go back!"
"Ah, okay!" A-Song quickly closed his mouth after hearing her command and hurriedly followed behind her.
"Hey, wait!" Xuanyuan Rui hadn't expected her to leave so abruptly and felt unsatisfied. He wanted to chase after her but then thought better of it; there weren't many people who bought mountains, and he could easily find out with some effort. So he relaxed. "Little Wolf, she's quite interesting, isn't she?"
The previously lying Wolfdog barked twice in agreement upon hearing his words.
"Damn it," Qing Luan muttered under her breath, holding the fluffy little creature in her arms. She couldn't quite remember what had possessed her to banter with him earlier; looking back, it seemed almost childish and ridiculous. "A-Song, what's got you so happy?" she asked, frowning as she caught a glimpse of A-Song stifling a laugh behind his hand.
"Uh," A-Song, caught off guard by her sudden question, choked on his laughter and began coughing violently, tears streaming down his face.
"Hmph, serves you right!" Qing Luan scoffed coldly, turning away and ignoring the pitiful A-Song who was still coughing behind her.
"Miss," Plain Grandmother exclaimed upon seeing the girl dressed as a boy. Her discontent quickly turned to horror when she noticed what was in Qing Luan's arms. She stepped back in shock, pointing at the creature and shouting, "Wolf... wolf..."
"Plain Grandmother," Qing Luan said, suppressing a laugh at the older woman's panicked expression. "He's just a baby. Even if he is a wolf, he won't bite. Stop making such a fuss." To be honest, she had been surprised herself at first, but after carrying the little one back home, she felt much calmer.
"But... but it's still a wolf!?" Plain Grandmother protested.
"There's nothing to worry about. I brought him down from the mountain; he'll be with us from now on," Qing Luan reassured her. As long as they raised him well, there would be fewer people daring to bully them in the future.
Seeing how relaxed Qing Luan was about it, Plain Grandmother shot a disapproving glare at A-Song trailing behind them, blaming him for not stopping her. A-Song felt utterly helpless under Plain Grandmother's gaze; how could he possibly stop the decisions made by the miss?
"Miss, wolves are different from other animals. They are very protective of their young and work together as a pack. If they find out we’ve taken their cub, they will definitely come looking for it. And then..." Plain Grandmother continued to nag as she followed behind, hoping to change her mind. Having a wolf in their home was really unsettling!
Qing Luan halted and turned around to explain wearily, "This wolf won't attract others; he's been targeted by hunters. His parents are probably dead, so there are no wolves around to protect him. So please stop worrying about it."
Sometimes she truly questioned whether her decision was right or wrong. Plain Grandmother meant well but could be overly nagging at times. She wanted someone to help manage things, not an overbearing mother figure—that would drive her crazy.
The snow-white little wolf's arrival at home thrilled Tide and Zhao Yun. They surrounded the little creature, chattering excitedly while the cub trembled and curled its tail around itself. Its brown eyes looked up at Qing Luan with a pitiful expression that melted her heart in an instant.
This little guy is surprisingly adorable; it's quite strange.
"Alright, alright, everyone wash your hands; it's time to eat," Qing Luan said as she shooed away the two drooling fellows to rescue the cute Little Wolf. She then looked at Qin'er, who stood nearby, hesitant to approach. With a knowing smile, she said, "I can handle this little one. If you're scared, just stay back."
