"Miss, why don't we go find Madam?" Mingming was puzzled. Although the young lady had returned to the capital and undergone significant changes, she preferred to stay in this small courtyard rather than meet Madam.
"If I see Mother, many things will become impossible," she thought. Aunt Huang would not let go of her jealousy and hatred just because Mother had been dismissed. After all, Father’s first wife was Mother, and she had once held a powerful position over her, so she had to be cautious.
If her whereabouts were revealed, it could endanger everyone—after all, the events from years ago were closely tied to Aunt Huang. If she discovered that the person she intended to kill was still alive, she would surely come after her again. It was better to remain hidden and plan carefully from the shadows.
"If Madam knew that you were still alive, she would be very happy," tears shimmered in her eyes. Over the years, watching the young lady struggle and strive had truly pained her heart. If Madam found out, it would break her heart.
"We will definitely meet again; don’t worry!" She understood Qin'er’s pain of being so close yet unable to reunite, but she had to endure. The capital was not her territory; one wrong step could lead to irreversible consequences. Therefore, she couldn't afford to take reckless risks, especially since there were many people she needed to protect.
"The eldest young lady must be very sad right now," Qin'er shifted the topic, leaving Qing Luan speechless. She felt that Qin'er was becoming increasingly negative and pessimistic, only thinking of bad things, and her smile had vanished.
"She will be fine; can you stop overthinking?" Unable to tolerate Qin'er’s morose demeanor any longer, she shouted towards the door, "A-Song!"
"Miss," A-Song immediately entered upon hearing her voice.
"Take Qin'er away; let her come back when she has a smile on her face," Qing Luan said with frustration. She felt overwhelmed as it was; having Qin'er add to her troubles was maddening.
"Uh!" A-Song was stumped by this new challenging task.
"Huh," seeing A-Song's defeated expression eased Qing Luan's mood slightly. It wasn't that she lacked compassion; it was just that everything piled up together made it hard for her to breathe. Coupled with Qin'er's sorrowful complaints, it nearly drove her mad. Thus, poor A-Song became her stress reliever.
The wedding date for Azure Phoenix was set for the eighth day of the second month, which Qing Luan also designated as the opening day for her restaurant. The constant revisions of blueprints nearly drove the craftsmen to abandon their work. With a boss like this, they truly had a tough life!
Two months later.
"Sister," Azure Duck looked at Azure Phoenix being dressed in a dark red wedding gown by the maidservants, tears streaming down her face. Because she wasn't the legitimate wife, she couldn't even wear a bright red gown, which made her heart ache.
"I will be fine," Azure Phoenix appeared exceptionally calm. "Stop crying; today is my wedding day. Mother and sister are not here with me; you should be smiling."
"Little sister..." Azure Duck whispered softly, her mind racing with thoughts of Aunt Huang, who spared no one, and she wondered if she would let go of Sister Four, who had been disowned by the Chen Family.
"Alright, don't think about anything. Remember to smile," she told herself, pushing all sorrow aside. From today onward, she would seek revenge—for her mother, for her sister, and for herself.
Azure Duck watched as her sister smiled so calmly, showing no signs of sadness. A sense of foreboding crept into her heart. Yet her sister had promised not to do anything foolish; if she were to act, it wouldn't be after marriage. But could her sister truly be willing to marry someone like that?
Huang organized a grand wedding to silence the gossipers, inviting many guests. The entire Chen Residence was bustling with activity, filled with people aligned with Prime Minister Huang.
"The bride is here," the Matchmaker announced as she assisted the bride in bidding farewell to her parents. The lively chatter in the hall immediately hushed as everyone turned their attention to the bride hidden beneath the Red Veil, their eyes filled with curiosity about what kind of beauty lay beneath it.
Chen Yan'er flitted among the ladies like a vibrant flower, as if she were the one getting married today.
Seeing all eyes on Chen Qingyuan, a malicious plan flickered in Chen Yan'er's eyes. She raised a bright smile and playfully said to her mother, "Mother, after Big Sister gets married, we'll see each other less often. Since everyone here is family, can't we skip the formalities?"
"Yan'er, what are you saying?" Huang was momentarily taken aback.
"Let Big Sister take off the Red Veil; it’s quite bothersome," Chen Yan'er teased, her gaze fixed intently on the person under the veil.
"How can we remove the Red Veil?" Even Azure Duck, who knew little about such matters, understood that the veil was not something to be easily lifted. "What if something goes wrong? Will you take responsibility?"
"Heh heh, Second Sister, why are you so anxious?" Chen Yan'er laughed elegantly at her distress. "Big Sister isn't even the main wife or a proper concubine. If it weren't for my mother's kind heart, she wouldn't even be wearing a wedding dress. What does removing the Red Veil matter?"
"Yan'er," Huang warned softly as she noticed whispers around them discussing Yan'er's sharp tongue. She feared that in a moment of anger, Yan'er might ruin their plans and urged her to stay out of trouble. "You... Azure Phoenix?" But before she could say more, Azure Phoenix reached up and swiftly pulled off the Red Veil covering her head. With a cold glance at those gathered who were eager for entertainment, she turned to the smug Yan'er and asked, "Are you satisfied?"
"Heh heh, Big Sister is always so good to Yan'er," she replied innocently while poking holes in others' hearts and acting as though it was their fault—everything seemed unrelated to her.
"Of course! Big Sister has always cared for Yan'er. I hope that whatever Big Sister receives, little sister Yan'er can have too," she said with a charming yet sinister smile that left everyone around them stunned.
"What are you talking about?" The first to react was Huang, frowning and shouting angrily.
"Aunt Huang, are you saying I married poorly?" Azure Phoenix was not angry; instead, she laughed, her demeanor lively. "Look at this wealth and glory. What do I lack? Hehe, you said I was climbing too high, so now I hope my good sister can climb high too. Is that wrong?" Her expression was extremely innocent, but her eyes were cold and ruthless.
"Enough," Master Chen, who had been ignored until now, could no longer sit still. He noticed many people looking at him with mocking smiles and immediately shot a fierce glare at his daughter, who had embarrassed him. Coldly, he said, "After bidding farewell to your parents, you may leave!"
"Do you even deserve it?" Azure Phoenix looked at him as if he were a stranger—cold and heartless. "Once I step out of this door, I sever our father-daughter relationship. From now on, we are strangers!" Each word she spoke sent chills down the spine of those who heard it; her expression was as icy as a soul reaper, making onlookers shudder.
Upon hearing her words, Master Chen immediately jumped in anger. "You are my daughter! Do you dare to be unfilial?"
"Hehe, you have plenty of daughters. Do you need one more?" She knew exactly what he was planning but would not let him have his way. "Do you remember your fourth daughter? For four years now, do you know if she is dead or alive?" She questioned him with a chilling intensity; she felt no affection for this father anymore.
All that remained was a burning resentment.
