"Ha ha..." Seeing the girl in front of him blushing with anger as she threatened a wolf, he couldn't help but laugh.
"What are you laughing at!?" Qing Luan's face turned even more annoyed by his laughter. She huffed, "You can't even manage your own dog; it just wants to bite Little White the moment it sees it..."
"Hey, miss, wait a minute," Xuanyuan Rui interrupted her with a chuckle. "This time, it's not Little Wolf chasing after Little White; it's actually Little White chasing after Little Wolf." That little creature seemed to want revenge, but unfortunately, Little Wolf had survived on a bloody battlefield, so such an attack was merely a light drizzle.
"Uh," Qing Luan was taken aback by this revelation. After a moment of confusion, she asked, "Why would Little White chase after Little Wolf?"
Seeing her adorably dazed expression, Xuanyuan Rui couldn't help but smile fondly, a smile that neither of them noticed. "That little guy wants revenge, but unfortunately, it didn't grow up fighting in the wild, so it can't beat Little Wolf." This reminder was quite kind; not everyone could teach Little Wolf a lesson.
"Little Wolf should be male, right?" Qing Luan asked out of the blue.
"Yeah," he replied, somewhat perplexed.
"Little White," Qing Luan immediately squatted down and looked at Little White. "It's not that I'm nagging you, but if you're going to pounce on something, at least find a female. This dog is so old; do you think it would be fun to knock it over?" She knew that Little White couldn't defeat Little Wolf and deliberately twisted the facts.
"Wang Wang..." The wronged Little Wolf voiced its discontent.
"Ugh..." Little White whimpered softly, unsure if it understood.
"Cough cough..." Xuanyuan Rui didn't expect her to seriously discuss this issue with a wolf and found it both amusing and bewildering. He swallowed a mouthful of saliva and choked a bit. "Miss, you..."
"What about me?" She shot him an annoyed glare, knowing he was trying not to laugh at her. She rolled her eyes and said, "Keep an eye on your dog; next time we meet, Little White might just manage to pounce on it." With that, she turned around and left with Little White.
"Uh," Xuanyuan Rui was momentarily stunned by her words. Just as he was about to say something, he realized the girl had already walked away.
"This girl is really interesting," said a young man who was about the same age as Xuanyuan Rui, with well-defined features and fair skin. "Little Wolf, looks like you've been looked down upon!"
“She is right,” Xuanyuan Rui said, his earlier smile replaced by a serious expression. “Little Wolf is getting older, and its fighting ability will gradually decline. Meanwhile, that Little Wolf is still growing. With some training, I believe it will eventually feel it can win.” Although it was just a joke, the girl had hit the nail on the head; she was truly impressive.
“That girl is quite remarkable,” Young Master remarked, pursing his lips as he hesitated before summarizing his thoughts. “Oh, by the way, do you know each other?” he asked, realizing it a bit late.
“We met five years ago,” Xuanyuan Rui replied directly without hiding anything.
“Five years ago? Wasn’t that in… that place?” That place was Xuanyuan Rui’s sorrowful spot, one they dared not mention lightly.
“Yeah,” he nodded. He felt no sorrow now; all his grief had been buried deep within him. “She’s not simple at all. At such a young age, she bought a mountain. She must have been only around ten back then,” he explained while leading Little Wolf forward. “Not long after I met her, my father had an incident… and I never saw her again.”
“Didn’t you go back?” He had returned several times to investigate the murderer of his father.
“I did go back, but she had already left.” For some reason, ever since he laid eyes on this little creature, he couldn’t shake off thoughts of her. Five years had passed, yet he hadn’t forgotten. “I didn’t expect to see her here…” The fishing village had transformed into a bustling town because of her influence; it was no longer the impoverished fishing village it once was.
“Fate brings people together from thousands of miles away,” Young Master teased with a smile. “Your parents are anxious for you to marry; if you find someone you like, they would be thrilled!”
“Third Prince,” Xuanyuan Rui warned seriously after hearing his jest, “if any rumors spread about this, it will be your doing. Don’t blame me for being ungrateful—if the Emperor forces me into marriage, I’ll drag you along with me!” Upon returning to the capital, he had been reminded by the Emperor to take a wife and was inundated with portraits to choose from. It gave him a headache; he had only brought Third Prince up the mountain to escape that situation and hadn’t expected to encounter her.
“Uh, got it,” Third Prince’s teasing expression immediately faded as he reluctantly agreed. Sighing inwardly, he realized that Xuanyuan Rui had him in a tight spot; otherwise, he wouldn’t let him off so easily.
Xuanyuan Rui didn’t linger on Third Prince’s words; instead, he pondered: what was Zhu Qingluan doing here? He had returned to the fishing village several times but everyone said she had left over four years ago… After his father’s death, he secretly investigated and discovered that the Zheng Family had fallen due to her actions.
The revelation shocked him; such intelligence at such a young age was truly not to be underestimated.
He hadn’t expected her to be in the capital; given her abilities, she probably wouldn’t be too low-key there!
If Qing Luan knew what Xuanyuan Rui was thinking at that moment, she would surely be exasperated: “I’m being low-key! If I were high-profile, would I have been framed and humiliated? Hmph! Otherwise, I wouldn’t have run into you!”
Qing Luan returned to her residence with Little White, only to find Plain Grandmother anxiously watching at the door. Sensing something was off, she quickly jogged over and asked, "Plain Grandmother, what’s wrong?"
"Miss, A-Song sent someone to say that there’s trouble at Jade Pavilion. Sister Yun took Aunt Lin and Yin Hong back," Plain Grandmother explained. When she went to find the master, she saw Yin Hong at the foot of the mountain. Due to the urgency of the situation, they had returned first and asked her to relay the message.
" Luan'er, is everything going to be okay?" Azure Phoenix asked with concern.
"Don't worry, everything will be fine," Qing Luan replied confidently. "Some people want to swallow up Jade Pavilion but found it tougher than expected, so they started resorting to underhanded tactics. Don't worry, Sister Yun can handle it!" If she couldn't manage this, then Qing Luan shouldn't have entrusted Jade Pavilion to her in the first place.
Even though Qing Luan reassured them about Sister Yun's capabilities, Plain Grandmother remained uneasy and kept nagging in her ear, which left Qing Luan feeling exasperated. She had no choice but to head into the city with Little Wolf… since Sister Yun had taken their carriage, they could only walk.
There was no rush for her; she strolled leisurely along the way, humming a tune and completely unbothered by the thought of someone trying to take Jade Pavilion from her.
"Miss," her relaxed pace was interrupted by someone calling out. Qing Luan wanted to scold the person for being so oblivious but found herself staring into a pair of piercing Black Eyes...
