Here, Little Luo led the group, while Huang and the Chen Family were being ignored, their expressions growing colder by the moment.
"Is this how you treat your customers at Jade Pavilion?" After sitting for quite a while without even a cup of tea or a greeting, she immediately voiced her dissatisfaction. She noticed a girl who had just entered, sitting nearby, and before long, she was served hot tea and snacks. This made her question even louder.
"What do you want to buy? I'll attend to you," Qing Luan said, noticing that everyone was busy. She subtly signaled Qin'er to step aside so that Huang wouldn't notice her, then responded to Huang's provocation.
"Chen Qingluan, you finally showed up," Huang said as soon as she saw her. Without any courtesy, she questioned, "Do you even realize that my grandmother and I have been waiting for you for a long time?" Clearly lacking in filial piety, someone like her would surely be disliked by the elderly woman.
"Are you looking for me?" Qing Luan feigned ignorance.
"Of course! If I weren't looking for you, what else would I be doing here?" Huang was seething inside. However, with several noble ladies present, she couldn't raise her voice too loudly and could only grit her teeth in a low growl.
After hearing Huang's words, Qing Luan remained calm and simply nodded in realization. "Oh, since you're looking for me, then you're not a guest of Jade Pavilion. So don't blame Sister Yun for not sending someone to attend to you. The refreshments served here are unique and cannot be found outside; no one will receive the same treatment!"
When it comes to expensive items, they must be treated with something equally valuable; if they were the same as everyone else's, it wouldn't reflect their noble status. As a businesswoman, she understood that not everyone's status is equal. In her past life, there were those who relied on their fathers or godfathers; this life was even harsher, so she recognized the importance of these distinctions.
"I... I also bought a string of prayer beads," Huang said indignantly, proudly raising the hand of the Chen Family.
She knew about those prayer beads; if Huang realized they were only worth a hundred taels, would she be furious enough to spit blood? Qing Luan had no intention of telling her that; she didn't want to cause such an outburst. With a dismissive glance, she contemptuously remarked, "Once you're in Jade Pavilion, if you're not spending at least ten thousand or more, it's hard to feel motivated to serve."
"You..." Huang was so enraged that she forgot the purpose of her visit today. After seeing Chen Family's subtle hint with a blink, she immediately spoke sternly: "Qing Luan, this is your grandmother; shouldn't you come greet her?" Hmph! While she might disregard her stepmother, she couldn't ignore her biological grandmother and was determined to give face to the Chen Family.
Huang's intentions were clear to Qing Luan. Unfortunately, many times plans don't go as expected. Huang would never anticipate that regardless of who came, Qing Luan would offer no respect or opportunity at all.
"I don't know her," Qing Luan said calmly.
"What?" Huang and the Chen Family exclaimed in unison, drawing the attention of the other guests in Jade Pavilion. "She is your own grandmother! How can you speak such unfilial words? Chen Qingluan, I care for you, but that doesn't mean I will tolerate your disrespect towards your grandmother!" It was clear that those who were watching found it unacceptable to be unfilial.
Curious onlookers slowly gathered around, including a girl who had just spoken a few words with Huang. However, it was strange that once she entered the crowd, her maid and another girl kept their distance from everyone else, as if it were completely normal for them. The girl didn't even furrow her brow at this behavior.
These subtle changes went unnoticed by everyone, but Qing Luan kept a close eye on the situation, aware that this girl was not of ordinary status—perhaps someone from the royal family. She discreetly winked at Little Luo.
"Child, your grandmother misses you," the Chen Family member began to act as more people gathered, crying with a mix of snot and tears, portraying a deep bond between grandmother and granddaughter. Many were unaware and thought the old lady must have loved the young girl dearly. "Come here, let your grandmother hug you, my poor child..."
Watching the Chen Family's performance with a hint of sarcasm, Qing Luan's lips curled into a mocking smile as she stood her ground without moving an inch.
"Chen Qingluan, aren't you coming over?" Huang stepped forward to accuse her when she refused to yield. "She is your grandmother, your own flesh and blood! Can't you see she's crying?" Damn it, how could this girl be so stubborn, preferring to bear the label of unfilial rather than compromise?
"Miss, that is your own grandmother. No matter what grievances you have suffered, the elder is crying; shouldn't your grievances fade away?" A middle-aged woman dressed in Crimson Red stepped forward, elegantly attired with a gentle smile on her face. Her tone was sincere and devoid of any ulterior motives.
Meeting the woman's gentle gaze, Qing Luan chose not to respond much. The woman's tone was relatively kind; after all, she had managed to remain calm even after hearing Huang's provocation. Perhaps her intervention stemmed from not wanting to bear the stigma of being unfilial herself.
"Chen Qingluan, don't be so shameless," suddenly an angry voice cut through the air, capturing everyone's attention.
Qing Luan caught sight of Chen Yan'er entering from among the crowd. A flash of meaning crossed her eyes as she smiled knowingly.
"Your mother is a Merchant's Daughter, and so are you! My mother worked so hard for your marriage; she finally found you a good match to marry into the Marquis's Residence as a legitimate wife. Yet you would rather disgrace yourself than accept it! What do you want? Do you need to drive your mother mad before you feel at ease?" One sharp question after another changed the expressions of many who had been merely spectators.
"Main Wife?" Qing Luan narrowed her eyes and smiled, knowing that some things had changed because of her stubbornness.
"The Young Marquis is outside. He is willing to promise your engagement in front of everyone. Aren't you willing?" The status of a main wife is not something just anyone can hold. With this opportunity, could Chen Qingluan still hold on?
Qing Luan looked at Chen Yan'er’s arrogant expression and realized that the change must be related to her. She deliberately did not want to go along with her wishes and pretended to be troubled, saying, "But Lin Ya said I am only fit to be a concubine for the Young Marquis. I swore that I would never be a concubine in this lifetime; otherwise, may heaven and earth punish me..." She wondered if she was digging her own grave and whether it would hurt.
As soon as Qing Luan's words came out, Chen Yan'er hated Lin Ya to the core. It was all because of that meddlesome person that things had become so awkward; otherwise, how could Chen Qingluan have so many objections? "She is not a member of the Chen family; how would she know so much? Just ignore her!"
"You say it lightly, but who knows what is true or false?" Sister Yun interjected discontentedly, "In the esteemed Marquis's Residence, if marrying a main wife leads to rumors of taking a concubine, it shows a lack of sincerity. It seems they are not truly treating Qing Luan well. I think it's better to call off this engagement!" Since she had already taken on the role of the villain, she might as well go all the way.
