Marquis's Residence
The fury of Qiu Mingqi was beyond words. He had his sights set on the Jade Pavilion, believing it to be within his grasp, only to find himself entangled in unexpected complications. Chen Qingluan had outsmarted herself, and it was simply outrageous.
"Qi'er, what's wrong?" Madam Marquis asked, noticing his grim expression and the murderous rage in his eyes. Her concern was evident.
Qiu Mingqi did not respond. He plopped down onto a mahogany chair, his face twisted with anger. He looked at his mother's anxious expression, opened his mouth to speak, but hesitated, fearing unnecessary complications might arise.
"Everyone leave. No one is allowed in without my command," Madam Marquis declared. As the lady of the house, she had her ways. Qiu Mingqi was her only hope, and no matter what, she intended for her son to rise above others.
The maids in the hall filed out without hesitation.
"Quickly tell me what happened!" Madam Marquis urged, her eyes filled with worry. If anything were to happen to her son, she would lose her only source of solace.
"Mother," Qiu Mingqi said, blinking in confusion as he gazed at his concerned mother. "She won't marry!"
"Who won't marry?" Madam Marquis asked, still trying to process the situation. Once she realized what he meant, she immediately raised her voice in shock. "How dare she! That is..."
"Mother," Qiu Mingqi interrupted her sharply, fearing that someone might overhear. His face darkened as he lowered his voice. "If you raise your voice any louder, we won't be able to keep this under wraps. Do you want people accusing us of treason?"
Even if she were the emperor's cousin, committing treason would not be overlooked. That was why he had hesitated to tell his mother; he feared her reaction would be too extreme.
Madam Marquis quickly covered her mouth at his warning and nervously glanced at the tightly shut door that the maid had just closed before turning back to her son. "How could she refuse to marry? The emperor has issued a decree; does she intend to defy it?" That troublesome girl was so difficult; once she entered the Marquis's residence, she would have to be dealt with properly.
"Mother, we were all wrong," Qiu Mingqi said suddenly, his earlier anger dissipating as he appeared drained and defeated.
"What do you mean we were wrong?" His cryptic statement left Madam Marquis baffled, unsure of what he was referring to.
"That Chen Qingluan is deliberately framing me; she wants to kill me," the thought of her smug expression filled his heart with a storm of hatred.
"Her? A mere Merchant's Daughter? What can she do to you?" Madam Marquis dismissed it, thinking her son was exaggerating.
Seeing his mother so relaxed, Qiu Mingqi gritted his teeth and recounted what had happened at the Jade Pavilion. When he saw his mother shocked into silence, he bitterly exclaimed, "She has known about the events from years ago all along, yet she left no trace. Only after Chen Xiaode received the emperor's decree did she claim that the Fourth Miss of the Chen Family had long been dead... Mother, the emperor's decree was given to a dead person! Isn't that ridiculous?"
Madam Marquis was still in shock, her eyes wide with disbelief as she looked at her son. She asked softly, "How could she dare? A mere Merchant's Daughter actually plotted against the son of the Marquis Heir and framed the emperor?" Such a thing was beyond her imagination.
Though Madam Marquis usually acted arrogantly, she still restrained herself in front of the emperor and her man, avoiding certain topics. But Qing Luan was different; she felt wronged and retaliated with all her might, not caring if everything was destroyed in the process. That was why Qiu Mingqi had fallen into her trap and was now desperately seeking a solution.
"Mother, you don't understand. When Chen Qingluan was expelled by Huang, her household registration was canceled, and Miss Chen Si is no longer on the Chen Family genealogy. It means I let the emperor decree a marriage to a dead person. If the emperor finds out, I would be guilty of deceiving him, and you would be implicated too!" This matter could not be known by others; otherwise, the Marquis's Residence would fall into an irretrievable abyss.
Although the emperor might not take direct action against them, their trust and favor would vanish. The royal family feared nothing more than offending the emperor; with just a glance, he could take a life, let alone if they angered him.
"What should we do?" Madam Marquis was genuinely panicking now but knew this matter couldn't be made public. She lowered her voice and asked angrily, "What about Chen Xiaode? How could he make such a foolish mistake? Deceiving the emperor is a serious crime; even Prime Minister Huang might not be able to save him. It's utterly foolish!"
You call someone else foolish; aren't you just as foolish? If not, how could you rush to seek an imperial marriage without knowing the details? That's incredibly naive!
"Huang is cunning; he desperately wanted to eliminate the daughter of the Zhu Clan. Who would have thought that Chen Qingluan would have such an unexpected turn of events? Now it's too late for regrets!"
If Qing Luan knew their thoughts, she would surely feel both depressed and furious. What unexpected turn of events? It was all due to her own efforts; it had nothing to do with luck!
"Qiu'er, what should we do now?" Their lives were not connected to hers; what they needed to worry about most was how to conceal this from the emperor and resolve the situation.
"I don't know, Mother. This time Chen Qingluan has harmed me terribly; I will definitely not let her off," killing intent flickered in his eyes; he would not spare this woman who had caused him harm.
"That's secondary; what's most important now is to think of a way to deal with the Chen Family and resolve this matter!"
"With a month left until the wedding, the Chen Family must be thinking of ways to pressure me. They might even demand something from me by then. We need to take it slow, but we still have to come up with a plan." This time, he had shot himself in the foot, and he couldn't swallow his anger.
The calculations of this Chen Family member were so deep. They wanted him to marry Chen Qingluan while simultaneously trying to swallow Jade Pavilion. Hmph, if they dared to scheme against him, they would have to pay the price; he wouldn't hold back.
"This matter should be discussed with your father. If something goes wrong, he can take charge," she said. As a woman, she could be quite arrogant at times, but now she felt nothing but fear, worried that the emperor would hold her accountable—she couldn't bear that burden.
"I know. You don't need to worry about this; I will talk to Father," he replied. Her timid nature made her anxious at the slightest trouble. If others found out, it would only bring misfortune upon them. It was better to keep her calm for now.
"Alright!" The situation wasn't beyond saving yet; there were still ways to handle it. She comforted herself, telling herself not to panic just yet.
Once again, Jade Pavilion had closed its doors, and Xuanyuan Rui boldly entered the shop that piqued his curiosity.
Qing Luan sat in a chair, looking at Xuanyuan Rui with a face full of helplessness. She had said she could resolve this issue, yet he still wore a dark expression as if she owed him millions, which gave her a headache.
