Xuanyuan Rui came to find Qing Luan to inform her that Yun Nishang's marriage had been arranged for the eighth day of the next month, three months from now. Right now, Yun Nishang was like an ant on a hot pan, restless and filled with dread, fearing that her entire life would be tied to that scoundrel, Brent.
Outside the city, in a courtyard, Qing Luan was alone in the kitchen, busying herself to find some peace away from the gossip and troubles surrounding her.
Yun Nishang's situation was urgent; if those people were not sent to the capital, the Bu family's marriage could not be disrupted, nor could Prime Minister Huang be brought down. This old fox had truly cultivated himself well; he seemed to delegate everything to his family as if he cared about nothing, but in reality, everything was under his control.
Now she was in the light while they were in the dark. One misstep could lead to more mistakes, so she had to be cautious.
"Smells so good," the aroma of garlic shrimp wafted through the air, making Qing Luan swallow hard. She quickly grabbed a pair of chopsticks and took a bite, then exclaimed in delight.
In truth, she preferred this kind of life—cooking various delicious dishes in the kitchen to reward herself and feed her family. But now, such a life felt extravagant and utterly unattainable.
Four dishes and a soup—simple home-cooked meals that were warm and comforting. Yet being all alone made Qing Luan suddenly quiet; she realized she had lost all appetite.
"Sigh!" She let out a soft sigh as she stirred her white rice with her chopsticks, feeling despondent and wanting to scream.
"It was so much better in the fishing village, with Plain Grandmother's nagging and Tide and Zhao Yun's mischief. That felt like home. Now..." They had all scattered and could not come together. Zhao Yun and Tide were at the academy, and Plain Grandmother was there too. She didn’t want them to be in danger, so she steeled herself not to see them—she hadn’t seen them for a long time.
Thinking about her current situation and how everything was related to the Huang family filled her heart with an indescribable hatred.
With vengeance in her heart, Qing Luan's fighting spirit ignited. She pushed aside her bowls and walked outside into the yard, where she found a stick and began drawing something in the sand while muttering under her breath.
Meanwhile, Yun Nishang had sent someone to seek help from Qing Luan. On another front, trouble was brewing in the north; the Barbarians were stirring again, signaling another war on the horizon. If there was going to be a war, Xuanyuan Rui was undoubtedly the best choice.
"Wow, quick hands," Qing Luan smirked coldly upon learning that Xuanyuan Rui would head north for battle.
"Right now, the Bu family is actively preparing for the princess's marriage. Prime Minister Huang cannot allow even a slight mistake; he knows my relationship with the princess is quite good. If I oppose it, the emperor will hesitate... So..." Xuanyuan Rui's brow furrowed deeply as if something else troubled him.
"What are you thinking?" She knew about these matters but sensed another worry in his eyes that had nothing to do with Yun Nishang. Thus, she asked curiously.
" Luan'er, don't you think... this battle came a bit suddenly?" He had never thought to hide anything from her, so he spoke plainly.
"And then?" She continued to ask without changing her expression.
"Prime Minister Huang is colluding with those people," this was the conclusion he least wanted to arrive at. By doing this, he was essentially committing treason, pushing the entire country into a situation of doom.
"..." Although she had suspected it, hearing Xuanyuan Rui say these words left Azure Wind at a loss for words.
Regardless of the existence of the Blood Feud, Prime Minister Huang could not be left alive. A person who would betray the country for their own interests was a disaster waiting to happen.
"Xuanyuan Rui, when can your people bring those individuals here?" Although the Merchant Alliance could deliver them to the capital, she believed that Xuanyuan Rui's people would ensure their safety much better.
"If all goes well, they will arrive in ten days!" The speed at which she changed the subject caught him off guard.
"Alright, you lead the troops into battle. Give me the means to contact those people and lend them to me. I will find a way to delay or cancel Yun Nishang's wedding," she made her decisions swiftly.
"Yes, you should also let her know. I will be leaving the day after tomorrow," Xuanyuan Rui reluctantly reached out to touch her cheek and then said with serious concern, " Luan'er, be careful while I'm gone. Don't put yourself in danger, understand? You must wait for me to return safely!"
"..." Qing Luan really couldn't agree to his request; she was already in crisis and had no choice but to fight against that Old Fox. "You too, be safe and make sure you come back alive, do you hear me?" Compared to his gentleness, Qing Luan's tone was somewhat fierce.
"Yes, I will definitely return safely to marry you!"
"Uh!" Did she say that?
" Luan'er, when I come back, I'll take you to meet my grandmother," Xuanyuan Rui felt reluctant to leave like this. Tomorrow he would be busy gathering troops and packing his things; he would leave the day after.
"Grandmother?" Was he thinking too far ahead? Qing Luan thought to herself but didn't dare refuse directly, fearing it would add unnecessary pressure on him before going into battle.
"Well, Grandma is not in the capital... When I come back, I'll take you to see her!"
"Oh, okay!" Just seeing her doesn't mean anything, right!?
Xuanyuan Rui left, clad in battle armor, his demeanor impressive as he departed amidst the farewell of the townsfolk. Qing Luan stood among the crowd, silently watching him leave, feeling a sense of loss. She realized that this man seemed to have cast a shadow in her heart; otherwise, she wouldn't feel so upset and unhappy.
After sending Xuanyuan Rui off, Qing Luan's mood was low as she slowly made her way back to Ruyi Tower. She wanted to ask A-Song for some wine to calm her tumultuous feelings.
"Miss," A-Song approached her immediately upon seeing her, lowering his voice with a hint of mystery. "Zhao Yun is here!"
"Huh?!" Qing Luan's dazed expression suddenly turned cautious as she asked in confusion, "What is he doing here?" She had always warned him not to meet her, as it could bring danger to his peaceful life and cause her more worry.
"He brought two people with him and signaled me to pretend not to know him. I have no idea what he intends to do!" A-Song was concerned that if the miss saw Zhao Yun and got angry, it might reveal his plans, which was why he had been keeping an eye on the entrance.
Qing Luan's gaze fell on a familiar figure not far away. After pondering for a moment, she said to A-Song, "Send a jar of wine over and say it's from Ruyi Tower. Also, casually inquire about their identities... Remember to keep it casual, understand?" She didn't know what Zhao Yun was plotting, but she knew he wasn't someone without restraint, and she didn't want to disrupt his arrangements.
"Understood!" A-Song acknowledged and set off to carry out her instructions.
