The situation grew increasingly dire as the black-clad figures, disregarding their own lives, exerted all their strength to kill the already unconscious Qing Luan. Meanwhile, the creature fought fiercely to protect her, hoping that help would arrive soon.
Severed limbs flew through the air, painting a gruesome scene that Qing Luan could not witness. The creature's speed was slowing down; if it were just the two of them, they could have moved gracefully. However, with the unconscious Zhu Qingluan in its arms and the relentless assassins attacking without care for their lives, the pressure mounted. They could only protect her and buy time.
In times of crisis, every second felt like a lifetime, dragging painfully slow. Just as despair flickered in the creature's eyes, reinforcements finally arrived.
"Whoosh, whoosh..." The sound of arrows slicing through the air broke the tension before either side could react. A few of the attackers fell to the ground under the rain of arrows, yet the black-clad figures remained undeterred, recklessly exposing their backs to be shot at while wielding their swords with increased ferocity.
"Wang!" The creature called out anxiously upon seeing Wang injured, feeling the weight of Qing Luan's body grow heavier.
"Take... Miss away," it strained to hold on, forcing itself to keep its sword moving despite its slowing pace, fighting against the poison clouding its mind.
"Our rescuers have arrived; just hold on a little longer," it reassured. Over the years, they had shared life and death together; it couldn't abandon her, nor would she allow it. If it let go now, within a short time, Wang would surely meet a tragic end.
Horses galloped forward as arrows flew through the air, blocking the urgent situation and throwing the black-clad figures into disarray.
"Finally here!" The creature smiled with relief upon seeing the leader but did not pause in its fight.
"Leave no one alive!" Chi shouted as he rode in after seeing the signal. Leading a group of Xuanyuan Rui's trusted subordinates—men who had clawed their way out from piles of corpses—none showed any sign of hesitation in such dire circumstances. Each wielded their weapons fiercely as they charged forward; the tide turned swiftly as the black-clad figures became mere prey on a butcher's block.
"Hurry! The Miss is poisoned!" The creature handed over the unconscious figure to Chi and urged Wang, "If we delay any longer, it will be trouble!"
"Mei, you take them back first; I'll handle things here."
"Understood!"
After a few people collaborated and quickly made a decision, some left while others stayed behind.
A-Song, filled with urgency, saw the distress signal sent by the young lady in the sky, and his heart nearly leaped out of his chest. The young lady was accompanied by malevolent spirits, and under normal circumstances, nothing would go wrong unless it was a dire situation that they could not handle, prompting her to call for help.
It was precisely because of this that he felt anxious and fearful! He should have rushed over immediately, but due to Xuanyuan Rui's return and the enthusiastic welcome from the townsfolk, he was stuck in a sea of people and delayed for a while.
"Miss," A-Song exclaimed as he saw the young lady on the verge of losing consciousness, nearly falling off his horse.
Mei was escorting Qing Luan back when they encountered A-Song on the road. She briefed him, instructing him to follow Chi and stay behind while she took her people to seek medical help.
"Go find Sister Yun; she won't enter the palace, and she's the only one who can locate the Imperial Physician," Mei said. The young lady's doctor had not come to the capital, and now only Yun Yiqing could save her. With Xuanyuan Rui returning to court, chaos reigned in the palace, making it impossible to find him. Only Yun Yiqing, who did not participate in court affairs, could remain uninvolved.
"I understand!" Mei replied before quickening her pace.
A-Song sent everyone following him back except for two companions. As he approached the scene of the incident, he suddenly spotted a shadowy figure disappearing into the grass. The half-visible face struck him as familiar, and he pondered where he had seen this person before.
After meeting with Chi and exchanging a few words, they began searching for clues among the fallen black-clad figures. "Ah, is it him?" A-Song's mind was consumed with this question. When a sudden realization hit him about who he had just seen, his face turned pale as he gritted his teeth in anger. "No wonder Zhao Yun got into trouble; it must be this guy who informed on him!"
"What happened?" Chi sensed something was amiss and asked curiously.
"When I came over just now, I saw someone who looked quite familiar. Now that I think about it, I realize this guy is someone I met six years ago when I first followed the young lady. He’s a lackey of Prime Minister Huang and must have been watching to see if the plan succeeded..." A-Song explained through clenched teeth. "If I had remembered it was him earlier, I would have killed him!"
Damn it! It was all his fault for not being sharp enough; otherwise, he would not have let him go!
"Don't worry; there will be another chance. We haven't found any clues here; let's burn them all," Chi instructed a few people to gather the bodies together and set them ablaze before leading everyone away.
There was nothing wrong here, but things were serious for Qing Luan.
Yun Yiqing had come out with Qing Luan, and after realizing she was missing, he had been waiting anxiously in the small courtyard. When he saw Qing Luan injured and poisoned, lying unconscious with her lips turning black, he immediately sent someone to fetch the Imperial Physician using his own connections. He then anxiously stayed by Little Luo's side, taking care of the unconscious Qing Luan.
Wang was also poisoned, but he had internal energy. With Liang's help, he managed to cut open his wound to expel the poison. Since he had been poisoned for a shorter time than Qing Luan, his life was not in danger; he just needed to rest well. However, Qing Luan was different. She had no internal energy, and even if others wanted to help, they could do nothing but rely on the Imperial Physician to use golden needles to force out the poison.
This method was too slow and not good for Qing Luan's condition. But apart from this approach, no one could suggest anything else; they could only endure and wait for her to wake up.
Xuanyuan Rui had known about Qing Luan's danger before entering the palace, which was why he had sent Chimera and his men to rescue her. He had no idea what the final situation was like and felt extremely anxious. After finally leaving the palace, it was already midnight. He hurried to the small courtyard and was met with the sight of Qing Luan lying unconscious with a pale blue face; he nearly collapsed.
"General," A-Song supported him and choked out, "Miss will be fine!" It was merely self-comforting words.
"What is her condition?" Xuanyuan Rui quickly steadied his emotions. He knew that if he couldn't hold on, Qing Luan would truly be lost. The person he had missed for so long, he had rushed back from the north for her sake, only to find that on the very day of his return to the capital, her life had almost been taken away. It was unbearable for him.
"The Imperial Physician said her condition is stable, but the poison hasn't been expelled yet; it has only been controlled. If it isn't completely resolved by tomorrow morning, it could attack her heart..." Little Luo's voice grew softer as she spoke until she could barely finish her sentence through tears.
"What kind of poison is it?" There were countless poisons in this world; one wrong move could lead to another type of toxin being triggered, making this situation quite tricky.
