Everyone was terrified of hunger, so naturally, the supply of food at Southwest Base attracted them even more. As more and more people gathered at the base, its strength increased, making it safer and safer. This positive cycle allowed Southwest Base to replace Capital Base, becoming the largest and most influential base in Huaxia.
With a growing population came diverse thoughts and ambitions. Some individuals, confident in their own strength, sought to seize power but were eliminated by the secretly monitoring Hanno and Elder Brother Li. Everything at Southwest Base was moving in a positive direction; however, a signature feature of the apocalypse—zombie sieges—could not be absent. Thus, Southwest Base faced a large-scale zombie assault.
Although they were intimidated by the overwhelming number of zombies, no one backed down. Southwest Base was their home, their only refuge; how could they allow zombies to destroy it? They were willing to sacrifice their lives to protect their homeland, ensuring a safe haven for future generations.
Hanno and Elder Brother Li hid nearby, with Hanno holding a camera, recording everyone's expressions.
"I see hope on each of their faces, unlike when we visited another base where the people looked utterly hopeless," Hanno remarked. "With this hope, Southwest Base can endure."
Elder Brother Li asked, "Did Southwest Base survive in the original script?"
Hanno shrugged. "I don't know; it wasn't mentioned in the script."
"By that point in the script, Bright Base had already captured the male lead and taken him to their research facility," Elder Brother Li said.
Hanno scoffed dismissively. "The people at Bright Base have gone mad. Last time they even sent someone to infiltrate Southwest Base to steal the secrets of the Purification Array. If they keep using such underhanded tactics, it's a wonder they can sustain their base."
"That's why Bright Base ultimately fell in the script," Elder Brother Li sighed. "It's a pity for those ordinary people within the base."
Hanno replied, "No need to pity them; most of those people will turn into zombies. Once the male lead develops an antidote, they can be transformed back into humans. Becoming a zombie at this point is actually a form of protection for them."
Elder Brother Li reminded Hanno, "Zombies eat people. When they revert back to humans and remember what they did as zombies, how do you think they'll feel?"
"..." After a moment of silence, Hanno said, "Whatever happens to them is not our concern. Once the story concludes, I believe we can leave."
The battle against the zombie siege was both thrilling and brutal; Southwest Base sacrificed many but ultimately repelled the attack and preserved their home. As cheers within the base turned into cries of mourning, Hanno's eyes reddened slightly. "I think when this scene plays out, everyone in the theater will be in tears."
Elder Brother Li's expression was serious, his eyes filled with emotion. "Because this isn't just acting; it's real, which makes it all the more touching."
Having lived through ten years of apocalypse together, Elder Brother Li and Hanno witnessed how the protagonist finally developed an antidote that turned zombies back into humans after a decade of research, bringing an end to the apocalypse and making him a hero among humanity. Before the world order collapsed, Elder Brother Li and Hanno formed their Nascent Souls; however, after the apocalypse ended and order was restored, they felt rejected by the world.
In the world of Great Zhou Dynasty, Elder Brother Li and Hanno awakened simultaneously but did not open their eyes right away; instead, they immediately focused their minds to absorb the newfound power within their bodies. After some time passed, their golden cores fully evolved into Nascent Souls before they slowly opened their eyes.
"Fortunately, this isn't Pure Yuan Great World; we don't have to face tribulations," Elder Brother Li said as he sat up and helped Hanno rise as well.
Hanno shrugged his shoulders. "Even if I have to face tribulation, I'm not afraid. I can order a few lightning rods in the modern world to divert most of the tribulation's power."
Elder Brother Li smiled. "That's a good idea. I've always been curious about those cultivators who use Flying Swords to face tribulation. Flying Swords are made of metal, right? Metal conducts electricity, so aren't they afraid of lightning striking them through the Flying Sword?"
Hanno chuckled. "But the materials in the cultivation world are diverse; not all Flying Swords are made of metal and may not conduct electricity. Do you really think cultivators are fools?"
Elder Brother Li laughed lightly. "So, we got two gems this time, huh? I wonder if they can help me travel to the modern world?"
Hanno replied, "We can try it right away and find out."
Hanno took out the purple and green gems, and immediately the Porcelain Jar reacted, drawing the gems toward it. Once the light faded and the gems merged into the Porcelain Jar, the two approached it. Elder Brother Li reached out and tapped the Porcelain Jar, causing a time-space portal to appear above it. The half-height portal grew to full height, but Elder Brother Li still couldn't pass through.
Hanno comforted Elder Brother Li. "You should be able to pass next time."
Elder Brother Li wore a rare look of grievance. "What if it still doesn't work?"
"It will work," Hanno said, standing on tiptoe to pat Elder Brother Li's head as if he were a big dog. "Now that the portal is already one person high, it shouldn't grow any taller. The next upgrade will likely enhance other abilities, with the greatest possibility being a two-way connection between worlds."
Although Elder Brother Li felt a bit disappointed, it wasn't overwhelming; his display was merely for Hanno's affection. Now that he had received that affection, he felt content and no longer dwelled on the portal issue. So what if he couldn't return to the modern world for now? There would be plenty of opportunities in the future.
After sharing some tender moments, Hanno and Elder Brother Li returned to the modern world. After breakfast, Hanno went to a car dealership and, with the help of a saleswoman, bought a domestic car priced between three hundred thousand and four hundred thousand yuan before driving to the countryside. Han Dad and Mom Han were in the fields picking vegetables—not just a little for cooking but two large baskets full, and they kept going.
"Mom, Dad, why are you picking so many vegetables? Are you selling them?"
"Come over and help," Mom Han called her daughter over. "A former student of your dad called from S City in Jiangnan. He built a Taoist temple there and started a martial arts class, wanting your dad to go there as a coach to help teach the students."
Hanno picked cucumbers and eggplants while saying, "Is Dad interested? Have you decided to go to S City? Is that why you're harvesting everything? Can you eat all of this?"
Mom Han replied, "We can't finish it all; we'll make some into dried vegetables and pickled cucumbers. Your dad and I will take some with us."
"What about the vegetable garden?"
"Isn't there still you?"
"Alright then, I'll move back and take care of both the fields and the garden. That should be fine?"
"This realization is quite good."
Hanno made a face at Mom Han and walked over to Han Dad. "Dad, how's your practice of Wuxiang Gong going?"
"Not bad," Han Dad replied happily when he heard his daughter's question. He picked up a pebble the size of a peanut from the ground and crushed it in his hand, turning it into powder. "I can crush stones this size now. Once my internal strength deepens, I’ll be able to crush even larger ones."
Hanno nodded. Her parents had a good aptitude for cultivation; it hadn’t been long, and they had already developed such internal power.
"Dad, I have a technique that’s even more profound than Wuxiang Gong. Practicing it will be better for your body than Wuxiang Gong. You and Mom should switch to this one."
"Oh? Let me see it," Han Dad said, intrigued.
Hanno pretended to pull something from her pocket but actually retrieved the foundational cultivation method she had written from the space bound to her soul and handed it to Han Dad. Upon looking at it, Han Dad felt that this technique appeared simple but contained deeper principles than Wuxiang Gong, and he became engrossed in it.
While accompanying Han Dad, Hanno leisurely picked vegetables. She didn’t explicitly tell Han Dad and Mom Han that the new technique was a cultivation method; she didn’t want to burden them, so she let them think she was practicing Inner Power techniques instead. She planned to reveal the truth once they reached the Foundation Establishment Period.
Han Dad's student was not one of his school students but rather a disciple who had trained under him in martial arts for some time named Su Anyang, with the Taoist name Xu Yan. Yes, he was a Taoist priest. Su Anyang became a monk in his teens due to family reasons; however, his master treated him well, sending him to Taoist Academy for university and allowing him to learn martial arts from several friends who were skilled in combat. He was well-rounded in both literature and martial arts. Later, when Su Anyang's master lost a power struggle against his own senior brother for Master Liu's position, Su Anyang, not one to remain beneath others, left the temple and ventured south to Jiangnan. There, he made a name for himself, raising millions and rebuilding a temple in Jiangnan, bringing his master and fellow disciples there to assist him. He even established a Taoist martial arts training class, inviting the elders who had taught him martial arts back then to help teach in Jiangnan while providing them with excellent compensation. Han Dad did not go there solely for the good treatment—his family’s living conditions were already quite good—but rather to reconnect with friends he hadn’t seen in years and exchange insights on martial arts, mainly to show off his Inner Power (Hanno agreed that Han Dad could share Wuxiang Gong with others but strictly instructed that they must never reveal the cultivation methods). He agreed to go to Jiangnan and arranged with Su Anyang to teach for only six months before returning to D City.
Han Dad practiced Tai Chi and Wudang techniques while adhering to Taoism; he had extensive knowledge of Taoist theories and principles. Thus, the foundational cultivation method posed no challenge for him. He quickly got started, converting all the internal power he cultivated from Wuxiang Gong into true energy and helped Mom Han do the same. The two became cultivators at the first stage of Qi training without even realizing it.
Things were urgent in Jiangnan as the martial arts class was about to start, but there were only two young coaches who lacked authority. Therefore, Su Anyang urged Han Dad to hurry over to establish some presence. After tidying up their home for two days, Han Dad and Mom Han set off for Jiangnan.
