Chapter Thirty-Four: The Evil Dragon Pirate Crew
In the golden autumn of October, Belmer's Orange Grove once again yielded a bountiful harvest. Belmer led Nami and Nokigao in picking oranges, carefully storing them away.
However, a problem soon arose. This year’s favorable weather resulted in an abundant orange crop, driving prices down and making it difficult to sell them.
Belmer was quite troubled, knowing they would have to tighten their belts to get through this year.
"Done."
Inside the house, Nami leaned over her desk, drawing the Island Map. She examined the map several times and felt very satisfied with her work.
This was a complete map of the islands that Nami had painstakingly created over the course of more than a year of exploration.
The map was detailed, even more comprehensive than those available in the village, featuring port depths, landmarks, water depths, contour lines of the islands, and everything else one could need.
Nearby ships could easily navigate through these waters using the islands as reference points to reach safe harbor.
"I'm going to the bookstore to read for a while."
Nami tucked the map under her desk and called out to Belmer, who was reading a newspaper, before heading out of the house and running toward the distant bookstore.
"Did you hear? Many villages have already been raided by Arlong and his crew," a villager expressed anxiously by the roadside.
"They're brutal; they've killed many people and destroyed some villages," another middle-aged woman sighed and shook her head.
"Let’s hope they don’t come here," an elderly man couldn’t help but interject.
As Nami ran past the villagers discussing their worries, she couldn’t help but let out a sigh.
The Arlong Pirates, a powerful group of pirates.
They had been in the East Blue for several months, attacking seven or eight villages, stealing vast amounts of wealth, and killing many people.
Nami silently prayed that they would not come here.
She crossed the road and arrived at the bookstore in the village.
The bookstore was not large, but it was filled with many books. Six shelves lined both walls, stacked with books, and the central table was piled high with more.
"It's Nami!"
The shopkeeper, an older man, smiled upon seeing her. "Feel free to read, just don't bend the pages or get them dirty."
He knew that Nami's family was quite poor and couldn't afford to buy books, so he never stopped her from coming in to read.
"I'll be careful," she replied.
Once inside, Nami flipped through a few books until she found one that caught her eye. She picked it up, her gaze filled with longing.
"This book is amazing."
Nami looked at the cover, which read "Navigain," referring to navigation techniques.
The book contained a wealth of information, including navigation positioning based on celestial bodies and climate landmarks to determine a ship's location.
It also covered hydrography and meteorology for dealing with extreme weather conditions, assessing ocean currents, and utilizing them effectively.
Additionally, it discussed ship handling and structural performance, as well as ports and waterways.
The book was thick, filled with practical content that ignited an insatiable desire within Nami.
"I really want it," she murmured.
Nami's eyes sparkled as she gazed at the book, longing to claim it as her own.
After hesitating for a moment, she glanced at the shopkeeper in the distance, who was engrossed in reading a newspaper and hadn’t noticed her.
Seizing the opportunity, Nami quickly grabbed the book, turned her back, and held it in front of her as she made her way toward the door.
"Nami, are you leaving already? So soon?" the shopkeeper asked, surprised.
"Yeah, I have things to do at home and can't stay too long," Nami replied as she walked outside.
The shopkeeper nodded, but just as Nami stepped out and turned the corner, he spotted the book.
"Nami, leave the book!"
The shopkeeper sprang to his feet and shouted loudly.
Upon hearing this, Nami took off running.
The shopkeeper immediately dashed out from behind the counter and chased after her, yelling, "Nami, give the book back, you little thief!"
He was older and had trouble moving quickly; no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't catch up.
"Is Nami stealing again? I’ll go catch her."
At that moment, Aken happened to witness the scene. Fueled by anger, he sprinted after Nami and managed to grab her.
"Let me take you to meet your mother!"
...
In the southern part of the island, Xiaqiu was suddenly awakened from its rest.
A tremendous vibration came from above the Surface of the Sea.
Xiaqiu opened its mouth and released sound waves. When the echoes returned, it detected a massive Sea Vessel.
This Sea Vessel was enormous, rivaled only by a Naval Battleship.
The Navy has arrived?
Xiaqiu immediately surfaced and looked into the distance, where it saw a gigantic Pirate Ship approaching.
So big.
It was the first time Xiaqiu had seen such a large Pirate Ship, measuring at least sixty meters in length.
The ship was wide, with several Masts, featuring both horizontal and vertical sails, and countless cannon ports.
But in the next moment, Xiaqiu narrowed its eyes slightly.
The hull of this Pirate Ship had jagged, pointed edges, and on the largest horizontal sail was an emblem.
This was the emblem of the wicked dragon Pirate Crew.
The instant Xiaqiu recognized the sharp angles and the emblem, it realized their identity.
It turned out to be the Evil Dragon Pirate Crew built by Arlong.
They had actually arrived in the East Sea, coming to this island to plunder.
Xiaqiu thought for a moment; the timing was about right. It was now the year 151 of the Sea Circle Calendar.
Jinbei had become one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea last year, and Arlong had also been released from Impel Down last year. After that, he had a falling out with Jinbei and came to the East Sea.
The Evil Dragon Pirate Crew was entirely composed of Fishmen.
As Xiaqiu considered their identities, a sudden desire to devour them surged within him.
Sea fish provided Evolutionary Energy, humans provided Enhanced Energy—what about Fishmen and Merfolk? Would they provide both types of energy?
Even if they only offered Enhanced Energy, their strength, which was ten times greater than that of humans, would still be worth consuming.
However, he couldn't take them on.
Ordinary Fishmen might be manageable, but he certainly wouldn't dare confront an Officer.
Setting aside Arlong for now, there were still three Officers to deal with.
The first was an Octopus Fishman who possessed six arms and excelled in swordsmanship with his Six Sword Style.
He had immense strength; with just two hands, he could lift and throw a wall. Each sword in his Six Sword Style weighed three hundred kilograms.
He could also spray ink and was skilled in martial arts.
The second was Crocboy, a Soft-Boned Fishman who had achieved a black belt in karate at the forty-degree level.
He had once struck Sanji underwater, sending him crashing into a distant cliff, shattering the rocks.
The third was Jiu, the Kiss Fish Fishman, capable of spitting out water bubbles for attacks.
The large water bubble he released destroyed over a dozen trees; the bubbles could easily break branches as well.
These three Officers each had their strengths and possessed formidable attack power.
More importantly, they could breathe underwater and move freely, unlike humans whose strength was halved in water.
Of course, in terms of raw power, his strength far surpassed theirs.
But they were much more agile, especially considering their size.
They could easily evade his attacks like Colonel Lido and strike from weak points.
With their strength, they could inflict damage on him even in the water, potentially wearing him down to nothing.
Thus, victory was unattainable.
Xiaqiu thought this over and extinguished the idea of Attacking them, slowly submerging into the water.
He would wait until they left.
They were merely here to rob; once they finished their heist, they would return to their base on the island where Cocoa West Village was located.
It was impossible for Cocoa West Village to be here.
The Evil Dragon Pirate Crew had ultimately controlled over twenty villages; it couldn't be this coincidental.
Xiaqiu thought quietly, waiting for them to leave.
However, as time passed and evening approached, the Arlong Pirates still had not departed.
Could it be?
A foreboding feeling began to grow within Xiaqiu.
Suddenly, the Evil Dragon Pirate Crew set sail on their Pirate Ship. Just as Xiaqiu let out a sigh of relief, thinking they were finally leaving, he realized that the Pirate Ship was not moving away from the island but was instead slowly heading in his direction.
Xiaqiu quickly hid and swam away while keeping an eye on them.
When Xiaqiu saw the Pirate Ship enter the southern Coast and stop in a recessed area, he finally understood that the island he was on was Cocoa West Village.
From this day forward, the Evil Dragon Pirate Crew would use this place as their base for the next eight years.
As for Nami, by this time, her mother Belmer had already been killed by Arlong. Nami had been captured by Arlong after he discovered her navigational charts and was forced into the Evil Dragon Pirate Crew.
To protect her village, she joined Arlong's gang and became a member of the Evil Dragon Pirate Crew.
After enduring humiliation and hardship, she resorted to stealing and drawing maps for the Evil Dragon Pirate Crew to earn money in an attempt to redeem her village.
But what awaited her was despair.
It wasn't until she was rescued by Luffy and his friends, defeating the Evil Dragon, that she finally escaped her painful fate.
A sudden wave of anger surged within Xiaqiu; he wished he could kill every Fishman of the Evil Dragon Pirate Crew.
Of course, it's not because of Nami.
It's because of where your Pirate Ship is docked, Southern Bay; that's my territory.
What was that saying? Those who trespass on my land...
Will be killed!
Xiaqiu felt an overwhelming surge of killing intent.
