Chapter Forty-Nine: Attack
On the vast ocean, the Spabu sailed with its sails fully inflated, heading towards the distance.
“How far are we from Bernat Island?” Arlong asked, looking at the navigator.
“We've already left the Jumeda Islands about twenty nautical miles, and we still have around sixty nautical miles to Bernat Island,” the navigator replied.
“I remember there’s an island nearby that has been occupied, right?” Arlong inquired curiously.
The navigator nodded. “Yes, it’s Mel Island, located thirty nautical miles from here, in the southeast direction along with Bernat Island.”
Jiu chuckled and said, “Arlong, actually, we learned about Bernat Island from a villager of Mel Island. That villager told me about this island to avoid three months of offerings for his family.”
“It seems like Jiu got that information when collecting offerings. How many people are in his family?” Arlong asked with curiosity.
Jiu nodded. “There are four people in total—two adults and two children.”
“Two adults, two children, three months—only one hundred twenty thousand Berries in offerings,” Arlong laughed. “For one hundred twenty thousand Berries, they sold out an island. Humans truly are creatures who forget morality for profit.”
The navigator was slightly taken aback and bluntly said, “I think they didn’t do it for money. They couldn’t come up with the money; otherwise, they would be killed. They did it to save their lives.”
“You…”
Arlong paused, reflecting on the navigator's straightforward nature. He didn’t dwell on it and stood up. “I’ll go rest in the cabin. Call me when we arrive.”
After leaving those words, Arlong headed towards the cabin. At that moment, a loud bang echoed as the ship shook violently and tilted sharply to one side.
"What's wrong?"
Arlong's body swayed slightly before he steadied himself.
He took a step forward, standing upright, while Choo grabbed the edge of the ship to keep his balance.
However, some of the Fishmen who couldn't grab onto anything fell to the ground with a thud as the Pirate Ship tilted and swayed.
"Arlong, the ship is leaking!"
A Fishman rushed out from below deck, shouting loudly.
"The ship is leaking?"
Arlong frowned and looked at him anxiously. "What's the situation with the leak?"
The Fishman replied, "The left side of the hull in the seventh and eighth compartments has been breached."
Arlong asked, "Can it be repaired?"
The Fishman answered, "Lord Kanehiro has watertight compartments in place; it can still be repaired. I've already arranged for personnel to fix it."
Kanehiro was a Goldfish Fishman and the shipwright of the Evil Dragon Pirate Ship. His skills were exceptional, and his importance in the Evil Dragon Pirate Crew was comparable to that of an Officer.
"That's good to hear."
Upon hearing that Kanehiro could make repairs, Arlong felt relieved. Although a Fishman falling into the sea wouldn't be a problem, this ship was extremely valuable, and he couldn't let it sink easily.
"Then why is it leaking?" Arlong asked.
The Fishman replied, "It seems like it was struck."
"Was it a collision? Was it a rock or the Sea Beast?"
Arlong looked at Jiu, who was standing by the side of the ship, and said, "Jiu, go check it out."
"Understood."
Jiu immediately positioned himself at the edge of the ship and dove into the water.
Splash.
Jiu jumped into the sea and sank to the bottom, looking back at the path where the Sea Vessel had passed. There were no rocks or Sea Beasts in sight.
But at that moment, he felt the water tremble.
"Hmm?"
Jiu slowly descended, peering around from beneath the Pirate Ship. The next moment, he saw a shadow rapidly enlarging on the other side of the Pirate Ship.
"What is that?"
As it drew closer, Jiu realized it was a large fish heading towards the right side of the Pirate Ship near the Stern.
Jiu quickly swam upward, breaking through the Water Surface just as his head emerged.
With a thunderous crash, the Pirate Ship was struck again.
This time, the impact was even more powerful.
The crew on the Pirate Ship staggered about, and Arlong shouted loudly, "What on earth is that?"
"There's something in the sea—a gigantic fish has collided with the Sea Vessel."
"Chirp shouted loudly towards the ship.
'Sea monster?'
Arlong furrowed his brow. What kind of sea monster could smash such a large Pirate Ship?
'It's coming.'
Chirp suddenly felt the pressure of the water increase. Lowering his head, he saw that the dark shadow had not stopped; it flipped over and surged from the depths, appearing directly beneath him.
'Get up first.'
Chirp's strengths lay in his swimming speed and water cannon, not in brute force. Fighting such a massive sea creature underwater would be futile.
He kicked off against the water, propelling himself out of the Surface of the Sea.
But at that moment, a gigantic tentacle burst through the water, reaching for him.
Huh?
Chirp paused for a moment, raising his hands to shield himself.
Bang.
Chirp was struck directly. Although he wasn't knocked away by the force of the tentacle, he found himself unable to rise and began to fall back down.
Splash.
Several more tentacles emerged from the depths, striking towards Chirp.
Trying to kill me?
Jiu let out a cold snort, stepping on the deck with his right foot before launching himself backward.
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh.
The tentacles all missed their target as Jiu leaped over the body of the sea fish and plunged into the ocean.
As long as he entered the sea, he would be safe.
In the ocean, unless faced with the enormous Sea Kings of the Doldrums, neither sea fish nor Sea Beasts could outsmart him.
But just as he fell, the sea fish suddenly twisted its body in an astonishing spin, its head charging toward him with its massive mouth wide open, ready to bite down on Jiu.
Ah.
Jiu had just hit the water and didn’t have time to dodge before a giant maw appeared before him.
This is it.
Panic surged within Jiu, but he still raised his fist and struck upward toward the enormous mouth.
Many sea fish would aim for the upper jaw or the area around the nose, hoping to disrupt their opponent's movement or even halt them entirely.
For instance, if a person encounters a shark, they should attack rather than try to escape; you can't outrun it.
Try hitting its nose; if that doesn't work, then throw a punch at it.
But it was useless.
Crack!
Jiu was bitten directly, and then the massive sea fish turned and swam away into the distance.
"Tentacles, black sea fish."
Seeing this scene, Arlong's expression turned cold. Wasn't that the fish that killed Crocboy? Moreover, it had attacked many Fishmen before.
For two years, it had not appeared.
Arlong thought it had disappeared, gone to another place, or been scared away by Moo Moo.
But who would have known it chose to attack at this moment?
Damn it.
Arlong jumped directly into the sea, chasing after the fish.
"That's the fish!" Hachi also jumped into the water, closely following him.
"Keep up with Arlong."
Splashing sounds echoed as several Fish Soldiers leaped into the sea.
Arlong was the fastest; he pushed his hands back and kicked off the water with his legs. A tremendous force erupted, propelling his body forward.
He was the first to chase after the fish, but the fish was even faster, moving ahead and diving deeper into the water.
After chasing for a while, Arlong realized that the distance between him and the fish was only increasing. The surrounding stench of blood made Arlong aware that it was Choo's blood.
If bitten by the fish, Choo would be in grave danger.
Yet Arlong continued to pursue tightly, but with every moment, the gap widened.
He couldn't catch up.
Arlong chased for nearly five or six kilometers across the Four Seas, but the silhouette of the sea fish had vanished from sight.
He could track Chou's blood, even a trace of amino acids or the scent of blood would reveal the path he had taken.
However, the fish was faster than him, and at this rate, he would never catch up.
Moreover, compared to the fish in the sea, he would tire out first.
"Damn it."
Arlong halted, surfacing from the water, his expression filled with rage.
This was the same sea fish that had been attacking the Evil Dragon Pirate Crew. After killing Crocboy, this was the second officer he had slain and the seventh Fishman overall.
"Boss."
Hachi swam up beside him and asked, "Where's the sea fish?"
"It got away."
Arlong's face darkened as he looked at Hachi and shouted angrily, "You were too slow!"
"Arlong, you didn't catch up either," Hachi muttered under his breath.
"You."
Arlong trembled with anger, waved his hand dismissively, and said coldly, "Let's head back."
With that, Arlong led Hachi back along their original path. After swimming for two nautical miles, they encountered other Fishmen who had fallen behind. After regrouping with them, they headed toward their ship.
But the Fish Soldier moved slowly, taking as much time to cover these two nautical miles as Arlong did when chasing the sea fish over four or five nautical miles.
When Arlong brought them back near the Sea Vessel, still a distance away from the ship, he witnessed a scene that made his eyes burn with rage.
In the distance, the Spaboo had already sunk halfway, leaving only the Mast above water.
Around the ship, blood filled the water as a massive sea fish hunted the Fishmen. Its tentacles were wrapped around two Fishmen, and it had just bitten down on one trying to escape.
The surviving Fishmen were few and far between.
Seeing this scene, an overwhelming anger surged within Arlong, turning his eyes crimson.
I will kill you.
