Chapter Seventy-Four: Venom
Not far from the island, on the Surface of the Sea, seven or eight tentacles floated on the water, swaying gently.
Every morning, the sea breeze brushed by, and the Surface of the Sea shimmered like a mirror. The sun rose in the distance over the Surface of the Sea, casting warm rays of light.
An Azure Hawk soared through the sky, occasionally diving down to snatch a Sea Serpent.
Meanwhile, several tentacles lay across the water's surface, moving slowly.
Come on, just one more.
If one were to observe closely, they would notice that these tentacles were attached to the belly of a fish, which floated upside down on the Surface of the Sea.
Damn it, still not coming.
Xiaqiu flipped over in frustration, wanting to catch an Azure Hawk and using its own tentacles as bait.
But it was futile.
The Azure Hawks were not fooled at all; they didn’t even come close.
Xiaqiu wanted to hunt an Azure Hawk, hoping to grow wings or claws. Although the chances were slim, it couldn't even manage to catch one.
These Azure Hawks had excellent eyesight; they could clearly see the Sea Serpent and other dangers in the water. How could they not notice the massive shadow beneath those tentacles?
Forget it, forget it. After all, I never had much hope anyway.
Xiaqiu flipped over and swam downwards, heading towards the distance.
There was a fish over there, about five hundred meters away, roughly twenty-five meters in length.
After analyzing the data from Seven or Eight, Xiaqiu had redefined its sonar capabilities, allowing it to accurately perceive the size and length of the surrounding sea fish.
Compared to when it was in the East Sea, the detection range had decreased somewhat, but it was certainly much more sensitive than when it first entered the Grand Line.
It was a Cod.
With its long body, three dorsal fins, and slender Roundscale.
As Xiaqiu approached, it realized this was indeed a Cod.
Seeing the Cod, Xiaqiu charged forward, closing in from behind and biting down.
Xiaqiu struck true.
However, Xiaqiu leaped over it and instantly pounced on the Cod, getting close enough to bite down hard. Its two venomous fangs pierced into the Cod's body.
After losing its own teeth, Xiaqiu had grown two venomous fangs that were slightly different from those of a Sea Serpent—much thicker and stronger.
The Sea Serpent belonged to the subfamily of Cobras, all of which possessed front-fanged teeth. These teeth have grooves on their sides through which venom is channeled out.
The front fangs are relatively thin and slightly curved backward.
Xiaqiu's teeth were still grooved but were much thicker and had a more pronounced curve.
Xiaqiu's original first row of teeth resembled the sharp fangs of a Tiger Fish, but now it had grown venomous fangs while still retaining some of its original features.
Additionally, the incisors were longer than the original teeth, about fifty centimeters in length, which meant that when Xiaqiu closed its mouth, the two venomous fangs were positioned outside, protruding slightly.
Xiaqiu's fangs pierced into the Cod's body, and venom was injected through the ducts, flowing along the grooves of the teeth and entering the Cod's system.
Ten grams of venom.
Xiaqiu injected approximately ten grams of venom into the Cod's body. This amount represented a quarter of Xiaqiu's maximum venom output.
While this seemed relatively small, it was already a hundred times more than what a Cobra could deliver and twenty-five times its maximum output.
Even a Fine-scaled Taipan Snake could only expel about one hundred twenty-five milligrams at once, with a maximum of four hundred milligrams.
The reason for such a large quantity was due to Xiaqiu's significant body mass and large venom glands, as well as the size and weight of its prey.
Once the venom entered the Cod's body, Xiaqiu released its grip and allowed the Cod to swim freely.
The Cod swam further away, while Xiaqiu used sound waves to track it, slowly following from a distance.
Ten minutes later, the Cod stopped moving. Twenty minutes later, it began to sink. Thirty minutes later, it was dead.
The incubation period lasted around ten minutes; the Sea Serpent's venom typically had a longer incubation period, usually over thirty minutes. Some had shorter incubation periods and could kill within five to ten minutes.
Xiaqiu's hunting-generated venom had an incubation period of about ten minutes, which was fairly standard.
However, due to its robust physique, Xiaqiu could extend this duration up to thirty minutes.
Additionally, the lethal dose of my venom, around ten grams, was enough to kill a fish weighing about fifteen tons.
The median lethal dose is approximately 7g/kg, comparable to the Indian Cobra. While there are more potent snakes, killing remains quite easy.
However, the time taken is too long.
The incubation period lasts ten minutes, and the actual lethality can extend up to fifty minutes.
Based on my venom's lethal dose and my maximum hunting weight, I estimate it to be around sixty tons.
Of course, this refers to lethality achieved solely through my venom.
If I assist in the attack, then it can take effect within ten minutes.
Thus, as long as the target is not a giant Sea King over five hundred or a thousand meters in size, they can become effective targets for my attacks.
It may not be as useful as I imagined, but it still holds considerable utility.
Therefore, what Xiaqiu needs to do next is consume other venomous snakes to increase toxicity and reduce the incubation period.
The faster-acting ones are mostly from the six land snakes; for instance, the Inland Taipan can cause death within just five minutes with a mere milligram.
I just wonder if there are Sea Serpent toxins in the One Piece world that act even faster.
Moreover, the toxicity must possess the capability to injure giant Sea Kings.
Xiaqiu has already thought of a type of snake—the Sea Snake that Boa Hancock uses for her ship—which contains potent venom. With them around, even the giant Sea Kings would not dare to approach.
Xiaqiu added the Sea Snake to his menu.
However, this venomous creature, feared even by the giant Sea Kings, posed a significant threat to him. Its sheer power made it difficult to capture.
Thus, Xiaqiu needed some additional abilities.
After devouring the Cod, Xiaqiu returned to his habitat, where Moo Moo was resting.
Now, their habitat was not on the backside of the island but on its side.
One reason was that the Sea Serpent's activity range was within a thousand meters. However, with Xiaqiu and Moo Moo blocking the route to the island, any nearby sea fish were driven away. The Sea Serpent could not hunt for fish and thus moved further away from Serpent's Den, which threatened both Xiaqiu and Moo Moo.
The second reason was that he needed to hunt pirates, which could only be done near the Front port.
However, the stench near the port was unbearable, making it uncomfortable for him to approach. Therefore, Xiaqiu and Moo Moo stayed on the side of the island close to Reverse Mountain.
It had been seven hours since he arrived here without encountering a single Pirate Ship.
Occasionally, boats would leave the island, but they were merely residents of the island. The smell from those boats made him feel nauseous even at a distance.
It was precisely because of this odor that the island's inhabitants could survive in such a dangerous place.
Xiaqiu continued to wait. On his tenth hour here, he felt a violent tremor. He immediately surfaced to observe and saw a massive ship approaching the nearby waters.
The ship was about sixty meters long and twenty meters wide—a true behemoth.
The ship was a massive Lion Head, its mouth wide open, revealing sharp teeth.
The Pirate Flag featured the same roaring lion design.
It looked imposing.
But you all went through bankruptcy restructuring, and the movies produced have been declining year by year. Do you still have the heart to venture into the Grand Line?
Just die.
Xiaqiu closed her eyes and charged toward the Pirate Ship.
