Chapter Eighty-Four: Food
Whiskey Peak was an island adorned with towering cacti, and near the coast, a river wound its way deep into the heart of the island, converging at the base of two of the largest cacti.
At both ends of the river, numerous houses were built close to the cacti near the coast.
Aside from the cacti, the island was largely barren, with stark rock faces visible everywhere.
On one side of the river by the coast stood a cluster of white buildings, stacked like cubes, none exceeding six stories in height.
Inside one of the taverns within these buildings, it was filled to capacity with patrons.
The reason for this gathering was a robust man dressed in green, carrying a massive club on his back.
Not far from him sat many others, eagerly watching the man.
"R8, what orders do we have?" asked a stout woman in a nun's outfit sitting nearby, her gaze fixed on the man in green.
The man in green replied slowly, "We received news that Baroque Works has added a new Vice President, code name..."
"Vice President?"
A man wearing a wide-brimmed hat and carrying a long sword raised an eyebrow. "To be above Senior Agents and work alongside the President means they must be quite powerful. It seems Baroque Works has gained considerable strength."
"Indeed," R8 nodded and continued, "Moreover, since the President won't appear before us, the Vice President will be the highest-ranking individual we can interact with."
"We're not even Senior Agents; whether we can meet her is uncertain," said a man holding a yellow gun nonchalantly. "My current goal is to climb as high as possible within Baroque Works. That way, when the President's Ideal Nation is established, we can secure higher positions."
The benefits promised to the members of Baroque Works were the Ideal Nation proposed by Crocodile. The higher one ranked within the organization, the greater their position would be in the future nation.
"You’re doing well; you’re already R11, while we don’t even have a rank," sighed the swordsman wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
"That’s because you lack strength," R11 replied with a smile, fiddling with his gun.
"You..." The swordsman in the wide-brimmed hat paused, taken aback.
"Alright," R8 waved his hand. "We’ll wait for Issa11sunday to contact us regarding the Vice President matter. For now, let’s discuss other issues."
He continued slowly, "The most pressing issue is food. Whiskey Hill Town is still facing shortages, and we can only guarantee our minimum needs for now. Therefore, we still require a large amount of food. R11, you and your partner will lead the other Bounty Hunters out to sea to fish and bring back supplies."
"Leave it to me," R11 said with a grin.
R8 nodded. "Then that’s it for today. Send someone to scout the Coast and be ready for any Pirate Ships that may arrive."
"Understood."
Everyone responded and stood up, filing out in an orderly manner.
"’sday, get ready; we’re heading out to sea," R11 said leisurely as he walked at the back of the group.
"Got it."
Dressed in a frog costume, Iss Father's Day nodded, gripping his firearm confidently as he swaggered away.
Two hours later, at the entrance of Island Waterway, Xiaqiu was hiding in the sea, gnawing on a fish.
His habitat was right at the entrance of the waterway, with the coast on both sides and the seabed close to the right side. Anyone attempting to leave could not escape Xiaqiu's scrutiny.
The water here was only about forty meters deep, with a white sandy bottom where many mollusks and crustaceans lived, along with some fish.
These creatures were significantly larger than those in the East China Sea; crabs and shrimp were over a meter long, and the fish were around a meter as well.
However, for Xiaqiu to fill his belly, he needed to eat too much.
So Xiaqiu did not consume them. When he arrived, these creatures fled in panic, but soon realized that Xiaqiu had no intention of harming them. After a few days, they no longer worried about him.
Some fish even swam into Xiaqiu's open mouth to nibble on the food remnants stuck between his teeth.
Xiaqiu had been here for five hours, and not a single Bounty Hunter had set sail, nor had any Pirate Ship arrived.
Currently, at Whiskey Peak, the town mayor could not possibly be Captain of the Royal Guard Ikaram, but at least he was an Intermediate Agent.
The strength of an Intermediate Agent was limited; even four years later, a Senior Agent would be easily defeated by Zoro.
Counting partners, there were at most four Intermediate Agents.
Even combined, their Enhanced Energy would not match Arlong's and might only slightly exceed Crocboy's.
However, considering all the Bounty Hunters in Whiskey Peak, their numbers were quite valuable.
But these Bounty Hunters generally did not venture out to sea; how could one hunt them?
Xiaqiu thought of a plan.
The environment of Whiskey Peak is extremely harsh, with most areas dominated by massive cacti and the remaining parts consisting of rocky cliffs.
Food cannot be grown here, so obtaining sustenance requires hunting from the outside world, primarily sea fish.
Vivi and her partner headed to Hunt Laboon because at that time, food was scarce in Whiskey Hill Town. They planned to use Laboon as a food source, as its carcass could provide enough food for the town for three months.
Thus, they would definitely venture out to hunt or contact others to transport food.
Regardless of the method used, Xiaqiu intended to cut off their food supply line, preventing any food from entering Whiskey Peak.
Once the food reserves in Whiskey Hill Town ran low, they would have no choice but to venture out to sea or reach out to others.
As long as they left, Xiaqiu could then catch them all at once and acquire more Enhanced Energy.
So Xiaqiu had been waiting patiently.
Now, having returned from hunting, Xiaqiu hid beneath the coast, its large mouth open wide as fish swam close by, darting in and out while feeding on scraps of sea fish.
Xiaqiu lay there lazily, feeling quite content.
At that moment, however, vibrations rippled across the surface of the sea.
Tap tap tap.
Xiaqiu emitted sound waves and detected a ship slowly starting up, navigating along the riverway and entering the ocean.
Xiaqiu quickly surfaced, chasing after the ship while lifting its head above water to observe closely.
The ship was not very large, measuring about forty meters in length, smaller than many pirate ships that came to the Grand Line.
On this ship, there were no cannons, but on the deck, at the midsection of both sides, there were two massive harpoons.
In addition, fishing nets and ropes hung from the sides of the vessel.
It resembled a fishing boat more than a pirate ship.
The hull was adorned with two letters, which were the initials of Baroque Works.
A fishing boat, perhaps?
Xiaqiu looked at the sea vessel and quickened his pace to catch up.
