Back at the company, Liang Yu was still buzzing with excitement. "I never expected it to be this easy!"
After a brief negotiation at the hospital, Lin Yan and Guosheng had signed the contract, officially joining Dream Member. Of course, Guosheng's five million had already been transferred to the company's account.
"Businesspeople are all very self-serving," Chen Rui remarked, not as enthusiastic as Liang Yu. After all, this wasn't his first time; it was Liang Yu's first real experience on the front lines. Previously, Chen Rui had handled negotiations alone.
"That's true. In the face of immense profit, who wouldn't be tempted? If there's a three hundred percent profit margin, a businessman would commit any crime," Liang Yu boasted, eager to showcase his knowledge.
Chen Rui chuckled. "What you're saying is straight out of Marx's Capital: Marx said that if capital has a fifty percent profit, it will take risks; if it has a hundred percent profit, it will trample all laws; and if it has three hundred percent profit, it will commit any crime, even risking execution. This clearly shows how easily people can be tempted." He reached out to pat Liang Yu's head but was swatted away. With a helpless smile, he continued, "Besides, the profits we bring them are far more than three hundred percent."
"I'm also curious. The Dream Project is fundamentally aimed at improving people's quality of life, but in doing so, isn't the quality of life for some actually declining? Isn't that contrary to its original intention?"
Chen Rui nodded. "Yes, but precisely because some people's quality of life declines, they will rely even more on the Dream Project. Overall, it's about changing the way humanity lives; we no longer have to be confined to one world. According to the Dream Project's metrics, at least seven thousand individuals can support themselves and their families through the Fourth World."
"So many people? How is that possible?" Liang Yu was astonished by the number. He recalled how difficult it had been to survive relying on a virtual world for work in the past. The idea that so many could now thrive in this way was almost unbelievable.
"That's not our area of responsibility. We just need to ensure that the Dream Project runs smoothly," Chen Rui emphasized the last part, hinting at his unease.
"I get it; the safety of the general public is also very important," Liang Yu replied dismissively.
"What do you mean 'very important'? It's crucial!" Chen Rui stressed each word as he looked at Liang Yu. "If we can't guarantee even this, then all our plans are meaningless."
"How long has this phase been going on? I've been here for two years now. In such a long time frame, has there been any incident?" Liang Yu countered. "The odds must be safer than most things in the world."
"The trial phase has only lasted a little over four years, but once this plan goes live, it will completely change human lifestyles. Can you guarantee that there won't be any incidents in the next forty years, four hundred years, or four thousand years until lifestyles change again?" Chen Rui shouted.
"Okay! Okay! I understand," Liang Yu said while covering his ears and mumbling. "This kind of luck is like sleeping through an earthquake in a flat area."
Chen Rui felt his temper rising and quickly patted his face to confirm he was awake. He hurriedly apologized to Liang Yu, "Sorry, I shouldn't have yelled at you."
"Alright, alright. Do you really not know who I am?" Liang Yu pouted. "Besides, didn't we calculate this? Even if something goes wrong, no one will die."
This issue had been repeatedly verified and studied by various countries since the planning stages. Ultimately, after significantly improving the instruments and equipment, the possible accidents that could occur were narrowed down to two types: the first was due to technical reasons leading to the brain being in a remote state, resulting in consciousness not returning and becoming a vegetable. The second was due to technical issues causing unexpected incidents when connecting to or exiting the Dual Machine, leading to confusion of consciousness. In simpler terms, it could result in someone becoming foolish or insane.
Although there were no clear cases to prove this, it was the only conceivable accidents so far; however, these were merely speculations. During the four-year trial phase, there had not been a single accident globally, confirming its safety.
"What’s the difference between that situation and being dead? It might even be worse than death. What about the families of those who suffer in an accident?" Chen Rui became agitated again but was silenced by Liang Yu covering his mouth with her hand.
Liang Yu smiled. "Alright, let's not dwell on this anymore. You have no authority to change your superiors' orders anyway."
Chen Rui sighed and smiled helplessly. Yes, he felt powerless.
Entering the office located on the thirteenth floor, it was still brightly lit but empty of people. Chen Rui shrugged helplessly; just as he was about to walk directly into the conference room, he saw Xiong Kai approaching him.
"Good thing you're here; we just received some intel," Xiong Kai said as he handed over some documents.
Chen Rui took them but didn’t open them. "What is it?"
"Remember we mentioned that Xu Yao had a signed property transfer agreement? It had been kept with a third-party witness and hadn’t been activated until now," Xiong Kai asked.
"Yeah, I told you about that. Your intel collection isn’t thorough enough," Chen Rui nodded and glanced at Liang Yu.
Xiong Kai chuckled. "I don't have connections like Sister Liang does. Anyway, just now, Xu Yao officially transferred the property to Xu Tao. There’s likely something going on here. I've already sent a team over; you should go check it out too; you might be able to resolve something while you're at it."
"Alright then, I’m too lazy to take off my coat now. By the way, didn’t Zhang Shi want that video? What do you think?"
Xiong Kai pondered for a moment. "I have both the Micro Camera and the microphone ready, but if you wear formal attire, it might attract too much attention. Why don't you just wear this outfit?"
"No way, I need to change clothes. Otherwise, it would be a bit awkward at the gathering. I can't guarantee they won't make jokes," Chen Rui rejected the suggestion.
Liang Yu chuckled, "Don't you have a Smartwatch? That should go well with formal attire."
"Come on, that watch of mine is designed as a Sporty Digital Watch, not a Mechanical Watch. How can that match formal wear?" Xiong Kai shook his head, feeling helpless towards the girl.
"Hmm? Then why not just wear sportswear? After all, he never follows the rules."
"That's actually a good idea." The two exchanged smiles and then looked at Chen Rui.
"Aren't you both deciding for me? Do I still need to weigh in?" Chen Rui helplessly accepted the plan.
Xiong Kai returned to his office, adjusted the watch, and handed it to Chen Rui. "There are nine Micro Cameras in total, distributed around the watch body and above the display. So basically, no matter which angle you're at, as long as you're facing that person, you'll be captured on camera. There's no need to do anything special."
"Alright, alright." Chen Rui took the watch and turned to Liang Yu. "You should change your clothes too; we'll meet downstairs at my place."
"You want me to go to your house at this hour?" Liang Yu crossed her arms tightly. "Pervert..."
"You're thinking too much!"
"Hurry up! I don't know how long they're planning to stay there," Xiong Kai urged.
Chen Rui laughed in frustration. "You won't find them anywhere."
"Of course, they'll be at Xu Yao's house."
Chen Rui chuckled and scolded lightly as he walked out of the office, "It's no different from being alone."
"Then don't ask," Xiong Kai retorted, leaning back on the sofa, closing his eyes and stretching lazily. "I'm really tired."
Chen Rui's home was not far from the company, and it was even closer to Liang Yu's house, which was right along Chen Rui's route to work. So, he suggested that Liang Yu go ahead and wait for him downstairs at her place.
Even though he was wearing sportswear, he didn't want to look too shabby. After rummaging through his closet, it seemed the only decent outfit he had was the set of Izun that a Japanese friend had gifted him.
Chen Rui let out a self-deprecating smile. "Although my salary is high, I don't know why I just don't like buying clothes or care much about what I wear. It seems I'm really not cut out for this job."
After changing into that sports outfit, he tidied up his appearance in front of the full-length mirror and put on his watch. Suddenly, he remembered something. "Oh no, Xiong Kai didn’t tell me how to start recording."
Just as he was about to run back to the company to find Xiong Kai, a voice came from his watch. "It was already on when I gave it to you. It has monitoring and radio functions; as long as I don’t talk, there won’t be any issues."
"That's good." Chen Rui felt relieved as he stepped out of his house. The moment he saw Liang Yu, he was instantly dazzled.
"You..." Chen Rui was taken aback by Liang Yu's appearance.
"How do I look? Beautiful, charming, right? Hurry up and fall at my feet! Hahaha!" Liang Yu laughed mischievously, her previous moment of beauty vanishing without a trace.
Once Chen Rui confirmed that this person was indeed Liang Yu and not some wealthy heiress, he waved his hand for her to follow.
"Can you at least act a bit like a gentleman?" Liang Yu said irritably as she kept pace with Chen Rui.
Chen Rui looked at Liang Yu dressed like a lady and replied, "You need to have a bit of ladylike demeanor first."
"Come on, do you even know what a lady is?" Liang Yu crossed her arms and sarcastically mocked Chen Rui.
Chen Rui's mind automatically conjured the image of Li Xue. "Of course, she's a rich heiress, much better than you, the fake lady."
He looked at Liang Yu, who had surprisingly changed into an evening gown. The off-shoulder pink dress paired with a pearl necklace and a light red clutch left Chen Rui momentarily stunned by her beauty, but it was only for that brief moment.
"At your age, still wearing pink? What are you, eleven?" Chen Rui chuckled.
"Your eleven wears this kind of gown. And this is light purple, not pink. Don't think of me as lacking depth like you," Liang Yu retorted.
"Alright then, my lady," Chen Rui said as he opened the right door of the car, placing his left hand on his chest and respectfully waiting for 'my lady' to get in.
"Thanks," Liang Yu said, unceremoniously enjoying Chen Rui's service as she settled into the passenger seat.
Chen Rui closed the door and took his place in the driver's seat, gripping the steering wheel. "We need to hurry."
Liang Yu wisely buckled her seatbelt. "Come on, if you want to speed at midnight, just say so."
Chen Rui laughed as he started the engine, and the Ford Mustang roared away. "We'll play after we finish our business. There's a notorious race track near their place."
"Akina Mountain?"
