"Is this enough already? How many times has it been? When will this end?" White Wolf exclaimed, pulling at his hair in frustration. For the past three days, he had been tailing those two, constantly watching them. At first, he thought things were progressing too quickly, but now the intensity seemed to have plateaued. George never mentioned his career, and their relationship was merely defined as close friends—barely qualifying as lovers. But...
Chen Rui lit a cigarette and glanced at White Wolf. "This is only the third time, and excluding yesterday when you stayed home to rest, this is really just your second time."
It wasn't entirely White Wolf's fault; after all, he was the only single man on the team. No! He should be considered someone who had never been in a relationship. It was normal for him to feel overwhelmed watching others flaunt their affection day in and day out.
"Hmph! They are just Special Forces," Chen Rui said lightly. Although White Wolf was annoyed, he couldn't argue back. Indeed, they were Special Forces, not professional spies.
The biggest difference between spies and Special Forces was that spies primarily focused on gathering intelligence, so their work revolved around tracking and reconnaissance, often finding information through their own efforts. In contrast, Special Forces typically operated under absolute intelligence superiority to conduct swift strikes, completing missions with overwhelming firepower and superior skills against enemies.
Thus, forcing Special Forces into such an environment was indeed asking too much.
Chen Rui stroked his chin and smirked again. "In that case, why not speed up the game?"
"Hey! Hey! What are you doing? Are you crazy?" White Wolf protested as Chen Rui draped an arm over his shoulder and started walking outside.
Are you really going to run into George? As White Wolf saw the distance to George decreasing rapidly, he knew he couldn't drag this out any longer. He pushed Chen Rui's hand away and walked seriously toward George.
"What are you two doing here?" Fox frowned as she spotted Chen Rui and White Wolf approaching.
George, who had been smiling, noticed Fox's change in expression and turned around, immediately recognizing Chen Rui and another man whose identity he didn't know coming toward him.
"Sir! Please explain your relationship with this lady as soon as possible." Chen Rui quickly flashed his badge in front of George before swiftly putting it away again. "We received a report that this lady has been held captive by unknown individuals. I came here to confirm."
White Wolf instantly grasped Chen Rui's intention and nodded at George as if to play along. "I am the bodyguard of this Yuki Chiba. Although I am unclear about your relationship with Yuki Chiba, following my employer's orders, we are about to take Yuki Chiba home. I hope you understand."
Chen Rui looked at White Wolf in surprise. "Aren't you the one who has been holding this lady captive? How come now..."
"I'm sorry, but this is not something I can decide. If Yuki doesn't want to, I won't force her," George said with a smile. "Besides, I could sue you for slander! I haven't imprisoned this beautiful lady; on the contrary, I enjoy the time we spend together, as long as she is willing."
The corner of White Wolf's mouth twitched slightly. After receiving a confirming glance from Chen Rui, he smiled faintly. "However, our orders are to safely bring Yuki Chiba back. If you haven't imprisoned her, then please turn a blind eye to our actions."
With that, White Wolf reached out to grab the fox's hand.
George quickly stepped in front of the fox, pushing White Wolf's hand away and taking a step forward. "Sir, please maintain the decorum expected of a gentleman. Even if you are this lady's bodyguard, you still have no right to do that."
After saying this, George cleverly glanced at Chen Rui, the meaning in his eyes unmistakable.
Chen Rui stopped White Wolf. "You come back with me first and clarify the situation!" He then turned to George and gave a slight bow. "I apologize for rushing over without solid evidence and blindly trusting his words, but this is all for work. Please understand."
"How could a dignified FBI Security Chief get involved in such matters? And even if you must intervene, isn't it overstepping your bounds? This isn't your concern," George said with a slight smile, clearly not intending to let Chen Rui off easily. He had seen Chen Rui at the party; although they hadn't spoken due to their statuses there, things were obviously different now—Chen Rui clearly had something to hide!
Chen Rui smiled wryly. "This lady is the daughter of an old friend of mine. She ran off without permission, which has made my friend very angry and anxious. But now that we know she's safe, that's great news. However, I suggest we send her home quickly; after all, my old friend's bodyguards are not just these two."
With that, Chen Rui exchanged a glance with George, who immediately understood his intent.
George was still a gang leader; despite being in love, his alertness was far higher than that of an ordinary person. Not to mention that Elephant General and his crew had been tailing them—there was no way they wouldn't leave some traces behind.
So it was better for him to hint at it rather than let George figure it out on his own; this way, he could push George's analysis while also gaining a favor.
"Thanks! But I still stand by what I said: I won't interfere with her wishes. So if she doesn't want to go back, there's nothing I can do." George nodded in thanks and prepared to take the fox away from there. The hint Chen Rui had given him indicated that there were definitely bodyguards nearby keeping an eye on him; he didn't like that feeling.
Behind George, the fox's lips curled slightly upward. She didn't allow herself to be pulled away so easily; instead, she feigned anxiety and stammered, "Dad... Dad really is very angry?"
George turned around, watching the fox's retreating figure, reminiscing about the shared memories of the past few days, a myriad of tenderness flashing in his eyes.
This girl is someone who knows how to care for others.
Chen Rui slightly bowed and said, "I apologize. Although we are old friends, I only heard about these circumstances from those bodyguards. However, Chiba Kaede's previous physical condition was quite good, so..."
"Oh," the fox gently interrupted Chen Rui with a soft voice.
The fox turned to look at George, tilting her head with a faint smile. "I'm sorry, but I think I should head back now."
"Well... okay, take care," George wanted to persuade her to stay but found himself unable to speak after seeing the expression on her face.
They split into three groups to return to safety. The fox took a deep breath and complained, "What was that about? Why didn't you discuss this with me?"
Elephant General, Tiger, and the others couldn't help but smile wryly. It's not just you; he didn't consult any of us either. It was probably a spur-of-the-moment decision. With that thought, their gazes shifted to White Wolf, who had been following Chen Rui.
White Wolf quickly waved his hands. "No! It has nothing to do with me!"
"It’s my fault for being too slow with the progress. Besides, continuing like this feels a bit unnatural. After all, Yuki Chiba's identity is what it is! I feel this is more in line with reality," Chen Rui stretched his neck and said nonchalantly. "Anyway, judging by the results, it seems to have worked."
The fox stood up and retorted, "Yes, it might have intensified things, but aren't you afraid that George won't be moved? If that's the case, I won’t have any reason to leave! What then?"
Chen Rui interlocked his fingers behind his head and stretched widely. "So if we're going to provoke him, we need to do it decisively; otherwise, how will we know if it works?"
Looking at the fox, Chen Rui pointed at him with his right hand and said, "You! You should propose your farewell to him! Then you can leave!"
"Leave now!"
The sudden urgency startled the six individuals. Was it really wise to place all possibilities on such a clear-cut decision? Wasn't the risk a bit too high?
"No!" Chen Rui shook his head. "Since we've already embodied this identity, any flaw in the details could raise suspicion. According to the script, we have no choice but to proceed like this. We—"
"We don't have any more time!"
"Ah!"
Once again, they were taken aback.
It seemed that war was imminent. The domestic decision-makers had likely informed Chen Rui of the approximate timeline, which explained his urgency. But when would the actual declaration of war take place?
Chen Rui voiced what everyone was thinking. Although it was merely a partial reminder, it undoubtedly hinted at the general timeframe. "The embassies of both countries have already begun secretly urging their citizens to return home. Once most of the nationals have withdrawn from enemy territory..."
That would be the moment of declaration!
This was a game of timing and speed; whichever side could withdraw its citizens faster would gain the right to declare war and launch a preemptive strike.
The timeframe was anywhere from a week at best to a month at worst.
War between two major powers was about to erupt!
The fox displayed a troubled expression, her voice somewhat ethereal. "If we push forward so urgently, what if my identity gets exposed? No, even if my identity remains concealed, what if he realizes I'm not Yuki Chiba?"
"Directly, you are a Chinese!" Chen Rui replied emphatically, as if this answer had been stored in his heart for a long time.
"What!!?"
Silence... an awkward silence.
"Let's just do it this way! We have no other options!" The fox stood up, displaying an unusual demeanor. His previous disdain for Chen Rui had transformed into unexpected support, making them seem like allies.
Chen Rui smiled slightly and waved his hands. "It's something that was bound to happen sooner or later. Even if you want to avoid it, you can't escape."
With their backs against the wall, they could only fight to the death.
"Now, we just wait for George's call. He'll probably want to take you out for a walk since we've pretty much exhausted all the entertainment options these past few days!" Chen Rui made another 'divine prediction.' Everyone instinctively looked at the fox's phone, staring at it for nearly a minute before gradually realizing their own awkwardness and bursting into laughter.
"La la la la la la—" The fox's phone really rang, and everyone immediately stopped laughing. The fox glanced at the caller ID: George.
Chen Rui nodded, and the fox pressed the answer button. Everyone held their breath as the living room was filled only with the fox's voice and George's voice on the other end of the line.
"Hello, is this Yuki? I... I..."
The fox wore a helpless expression and smiled lightly. "What’s up? Just say it directly."
"Hey, do you have some time?"
