With a command from the Elephant General, the portable Missiles carried by the fox and the large dog ignited their tail flames and shot into the sky after being launched. Two Missiles flew out of the launcher and automatically locked onto the entrance of the Nuclear Control Center, crashing violently into it.
To the south of the Nuclear Control Center, four larger portable Missiles quickly descended upon an unprotected automated turret.
Smoke billowed from the Nuclear Control Center as explosions, smoke, and gunfire created optimal conditions for the surprise attack.
"White Wolf will hold back and resist the enemy from behind; the rest of you form up for an assault!" The Elephant General signaled quickly, and the six people crouching at the edge of the forest sprang into action, charging forward through a hail of bullets.
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh—" The sound of tail flames from Rocket Launchers grew closer. The Elephant General shouted in alarm, realizing he had underestimated the ferocity of the defending troops at the intersection, who were now firing upon their own base. They had believed that the defenders would hesitate to fire at them so close to their base entrance, but reality hit him like a heavy blow to the chest.
The Elephant General swiftly pushed down Tiger in front of him and shouted desperately, "Get down!!!"
Lion Brother and the others also reacted just in time, quickly dropping to either side of the road. "B!B!B!" The Rocket Launcher exploded right in front of them, sending vibrations through the air and mingling with the cries of anguish from the defenders inside the base.
"Haha! Serves them right; they hit their own people," Tiger chuckled, seemingly unfazed by their near-death experience.
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh—" More Rocket Launchers flew in from behind, crashing directly into the Nuclear Control Center, clearly not aimed at them.
Lion Brother frowned slightly. If this was indeed an attack from the defending troops at the intersection, it was far too indiscriminate. Yet at that moment, he couldn't think of anyone else capable of providing such overwhelming fire support; he hesitated to rush out recklessly.
"Watch the sky!" White Wolf reminded everyone over the radio. They all looked up to see several black mini Missiles leaving long trails in the sunset. One after another, six more crashed into the interior of the Nuclear Control Center.
The surface of the entire Nuclear Control Center transformed into a sea of flames. Even though each mini Missile carried only ten kilograms of explosives, those dozen or so Missiles combined packed enough powerful explosives to completely obliterate all ground defenses at the Nuclear Control Center.
"This..." The large dog stared at what had become a fiery inferno. With such powerful fire support available, they could simply suppress them with firepower.
As the explosions subsided, the Elephant General charged toward the Nuclear Control Center and shouted over his radio, "Assault!"
The five of them quickly formed an A-shaped offensive formation and charged into the Nuclear Control Center without encountering any significant resistance. After all, they had endured such intense artillery fire; even if they weren't torn apart by that overwhelming firepower at first, the continuous explosions would leave anyone dazed. It was difficult for even elite troops to recover in such a short time.
"Bang bang bang..." After clearing all visible enemies, they arrived at the entrance of the Control Center. The surface of the entire nuclear weapon Control Center was only guarded by a defensive unit; the real Control Center and its operators were underground, living alongside the nuclear missiles.
The deeper they went, the more uneasy they felt. Although Chen Rui only had a single company of defensive troops, the weapons present were far beyond what one company should possess—two Main Battle Tanks, two armored personnel carriers, and countless automated high-caliber Machine Guns and cannons.
Without the firepower suppression from those Rocket Launchers and a dozen mini Missiles, they would have likely been torn to pieces by the enemy's fierce fire as soon as they reached the base's entrance.
Big Dog pulled out a Tactical Tablet and connected it to the USB port at the entrance gate. After tapping a few times on the screen, he decisively put away the Tactical Tablet and shook his head. "No good, the gate is locked tight. There's no way to open it with data commands from either outside or inside."
Tiger glanced at the steel gate, removed his hand from his tactical Grenade, and smiled wryly. "With the explosives we have on us, we probably couldn't even make a hole."
Everyone chuckled in agreement; while it wasn't pleasant to hear, it was indeed true that with their current equipment, there was no way to open that door.
Elephant General looked at Big Dog and asked, "There must be other ways in, right?"
Big Dog adopted a nonchalant expression and casually pointed to a spot. As everyone followed his finger, their expressions immediately soured.
He was pointing at the twelve Missile Silos. They could undoubtedly enter through there, but it would also expose them deep into enemy territory. They had no idea how many enemies were waiting for them.
"If we're going to do it, let's just do it! No more nonsense!" A familiar voice crackled over the radio. Instead of excitement, this voice made everyone feel an urge to spit blood.
"Bastard! If you think you can do better, then you come!" Tiger retorted with a laugh as he began pulling out a rappel rope to prepare for an assault from the Silo.
Chen Rui shot back at Tiger fiercely, "Damn it! If I weren't here fighting for my life, you'd have been stabbed in the back long ago!"
Suddenly, the voice of White Wolf crackled through the radio, his tone choked with emotion. Amidst his sorrow, he couldn't help but tease, "That’s a harsh truth, but coming from you, it’s hard to take seriously."
Three minutes earlier, during the assault led by Elephant General and others:
White Wolf was placing the remaining explosives along the roadside when he suddenly heard the roar of a powerful engine approaching rapidly.
He immediately dropped the bomb in his hands and swiftly retreated to a safe area to hide, aiming his weapon at the road while gripping the detonator tightly.
These were the last two bombs he had, and their explosive power was only enough to destroy a light armored vehicle that happened to be at the explosion point. After that, he would have to rely on his rifle and the few tactical grenades left to fend off the enemy's advance.
As he spotted the speeding vehicle, White Wolf relaxed his grip on the detonator because he instantly recognized who was behind the wheel.
It was impossible for an enemy soldier to be driving a LaFerrari on this smoke-filled battlefield; it could only be the 'mysterious' figure he had recently come into close contact with: Chen Rui, the Liaison Officer.
The 6L V1 engine effortlessly pushed this globally limited toy—only 499 units produced—up to two hundred kilometers per hour. However, due to the short distance, it couldn't reach its maximum speed before needing to brake.
The screech of tires and the white smoke from rubber meeting asphalt filled White Wolf's vision as the Ferrari came to a sudden stop. A man wearing sunglasses and smoking a cigarette stepped out of the driver's seat. If it weren't for his familiarity, it would have been hard to connect him with the previously refined Liaison Officer.
Chen Rui blew a smoke ring and looked at White Wolf, who was still in shock. "What are you staring at? Hurry up and bring all your grenades and explosives over here!"
White Wolf didn’t understand why Chen Rui was acting this way, but at that moment, his presence could only mean one thing: he had never intended to abandon them and retreat alone.
This thought warmed White Wolf's heart. He grinned as he placed his grenades and explosives into a briefcase and handed it over to Chen Rui.
Chen Rui turned the car around and got out again. This time, he retrieved two large weapon boxes from the passenger seat. He then pulled out a long black object that made White Wolf ecstatic. If he wasn't mistaken, what Chen Rui held was a Soviet-made RPG-9 rocket launcher. While it might not be as famous as the RPG-7, it was still highly effective against light armored vehicles.
Chen Rui closed the car door and opened the two large weapon boxes. What he saw this time nearly made White Wolf burst out laughing; inside were two 14-high Machine Guns, equipped with infrared friend-or-foe identification systems. Since Chen Rui managed to acquire these, it was clear that these Machine Guns had already classified former allies as enemies.
“Take these three items to the Silo, remove the original Machine Gun, and install these instead. No matter what happens here, you must not let anyone enter below,” Chen Rui said, tossing an infrared emitter to White Wolf. “Activate the Machine Gun with this. No matter what happens on my end, just focus on staying alive and don’t let a single person into the Nuclear Control Center!”
“But…”
Chen Rui mysteriously opened the car door again, pulled out an HK 7 from the driver’s seat, and slung a 17 over his shoulder. He smiled at White Wolf and said, “Are you still worried about me? Don’t be ridiculous; just take care of your own life! And stay away from this vehicle; when it takes off, be ready to face the enemy.”
Watching Chen Rui run ahead, White Wolf wanted to stop him but couldn’t. With a long sigh, he picked up the two weapon boxes and ran toward the Nuclear Control Center.
Knowing that Chen Rui had come to support them lifted the spirits of Elephant General and his four companions. The five of them began their descent simultaneously, sliding down toward the bottom of the Silo.
To better assess the status of the missiles within the Silo, there was a passage at the tail end of each rocket that connected directly to the Control Center. These passages were their final route for attack.
As they descended to the entrance of the passage, they found the door still open. Everyone quietly took out grenades and synchronized their timers to five seconds. They looked at Elephant General’s signal and threw the grenades into the passage together.
“B——” The explosion echoed as they swiftly entered the passage. The two guards inside had been blown to bits, but at that moment, Elephant General and his team realized a troubling situation.
The entire underground Control Center resembled a maze; none of the passages leading to various Missile Silos directly connected to the Control Center but were interconnected instead. Without specific blueprints, they would have to clear this underground labyrinth entirely before finding their intended destination.
“Why isn’t there a single sign in this place?” Fox remarked as he looked at the bare walls of the corridor, unable to help but complain.
