"Why do we have to drive there when everything is in Beijing? Isn't the subway extended to that area?" Ruan Yu said from the back seat, adjusting his tie with a displeased expression.
Gao Zhijie, who was driving, shook his head. "Come on, it's about eighty kilometers away. Does your family's subway reach the outskirts?"
Chen Rui glanced at Ruan Yu and chuckled, "If the subway were run by his family, it might actually be possible!"
"Exactly!" Ruan Yu laughed, putting on his suit jacket and checking his reflection in the rearview mirror, smiling contentedly at his handsome face.
Gao Zhijie raised his right hand and gave Ruan Yu a big middle finger, but Ruan Yu grabbed him hard, causing him to yelp in pain. "Let go! The steering wheel is in my hands!"
The three of them were currently driving from the Beijing Urban Area to a private university located on the outskirts of Beijing. They had been 'honorably' appointed as professors there and were now stressed about their first day at work.
All three of them lived close to their company, but the distance from the company to the university's office building was a full eighty kilometers! Most of that was above ground, meaning the straight-line distance was about seventy kilometers!
To make things easier, they all decided to ride in Gao Zhijie's car to start their positions at the private university.
"I heard that the students there are either rich or noble! I think Xiang Xiao deliberately assigned this task to us because he thinks we're difficult!" Ruan Yu checked information about the school on his phone and showed it to the others. "I believe you've seen it too; there's not much information online about this school, but it occupies an area of five acres! And there are only two or three hundred students enrolled!"
"What’s wrong with five thousand acres? Is that really big?" Gao Zhijie asked with a laugh.
Gao Zhijie grew up, studied, and worked in Beijing, so he wasn't very familiar with agricultural units or completely unaware of them!
"Five thousand acres equals three million three hundred thirty-three thousand square meters! That's three square kilometers! Just think about it—there's a school on this land with only two or three hundred people! Even including staff, it probably doesn't even reach a thousand! What does that mean?" Ruan Yu exclaimed, slapping the back of Gao Zhijie's seat in shock.
Chen Rui played peacemaker and explained for Gao Zhijie. "It's like having a school larger than Tsinghua University but only two or three hundred students! Tsinghua University has nearly three thousand undergraduates, master's students, and doctoral candidates combined!"
With this explanation from Chen Rui, Gao Zhijie understood very well; the stark difference in population density was evident!
Chen Rui continued, "Actually, you're also mistaken. The school is filled with the sons of wealthy businessmen—essentially second-generation rich kids—while civil servants wouldn't dare send their children there, even if the teaching quality is extremely high..."
Ruan Yu asked in surprise, "Is it being monitored from above?"
Gao Zhijie spoke up before Chen Rui could say anything. "It's not that we're being monitored; after all, it's just a school. But anyone who can attend there must be a wealthy investor. A civil servant's salary could never cover the tuition! If this gets exposed, wouldn't that be like asking for trouble with the disciplinary committee?"
"It's been a while! We must be almost there," Ruan Yu said, stretching lazily in the back seat. "I don't want to have to drive this long just to come here for work every day!"
"We're almost there, just exit at the toll booth ahead!" Chen Rui glanced at the sign on the highway and quickly reminded Gao Zhijie.
"Got it, got it," Gao Zhijie maneuvered the car into the right lane, reading the words on the sign. "Since that school occupies such a large area, we should be able to see it as soon as we exit."
"Who knows!" Chen Rui shrugged, eagerly anticipating a grand university to appear before them.
Few people knew that Chen Rui had always wanted to be a teacher because he hated being a student. He believed that once he became a teacher, he could find various ways to deal with disobedient students.
Of course, this was his mindset when he was still a student. For some reason, perhaps due to those experiences, he still held a grudge against the teaching profession.
Who would have thought that he would skip straight from being an ordinary teacher to becoming a university professor!
As they exited the highway and passed through the toll booth, a dense forest came into view. The entire road was lined with neatly arranged trees.
"What kind of trees are these? The flowers on them are beautiful!" Gao Zhijie exclaimed as he admired the sea of blossoms resembling clouds and rosy hues.
"They're probably cherry blossom trees; they look like imported Early Cherry Blossoms," Chen Rui said, also gazing out at the scenery and sighing in admiration. "This must be a forest made up of Early Cherry Blossoms—what an impressive sight!"
"Impressive enough to attract so many young nobles," Ruan Yu scoffed, indifferent to the beauty outside.
Just a minute later, a sign appeared on the road ahead. It read: Jinghua University, please proceed straight. To the left of the sign, another road branched off towards Sakura Forest.
"My goodness, the main road was built for this school! I guess this highway exit was constructed because of it," Gao Zhijie remarked in awe.
Chen Rui nodded. "Indeed, it's because of the school that this highway exit was built. Originally, students were supposed to arrive by helicopter, but many prefer their pilots to fly low over the cherry trees. This causes some of the blossoms to fall due to the rotor wash, creating a beautiful scene reminiscent of cherry blossom rain."
"But because it was very inconvenient to handle, the school ultimately prohibited the use of the helicopter landing pad and built this road and high exit instead."
As he finished speaking, the car stopped in front of a massive stone archway. The plaque above the entrance displayed four golden characters that caught the eye: Jinghua University.
"I've only seen Jinghua University on TV dramas before, but it clearly isn't like this!" Ruan Yu couldn't help but admire the imposing sign.
"Who knows when this university was established, but its reputation must be extremely low. After all, those who can study here no longer need to flaunt their university as a badge of honor; they truly come here to enjoy learning," Gao Zhijie sighed. "I just wish I had the means to send my son here someday!"
Chen Rui and Ruan Yu chuckled. "That's a nice thought."
The door to the Guard Room opened, and a security guard in a gray suit approached the car with a notebook in hand. He politely tapped on the window. "May I ask what brings you here?"
Gao Zhijie displayed his City Group ID. "We have been assigned here as the main course professors for Senior Year Class Three."
The guard immediately flipped through his notebook and, after finding the relevant entry, said, "Could the other two please show their IDs as well? Thank you."
Chen Rui also took out his ID from his pocket and showed it to the guard. The guard smiled. "And one more, thank you."
Gao Zhijie used the back of his hand to tap Ruan Yu in the back seat. Ruan Yu pouted and complained, "Isn't one or two enough? Why do they have to check everyone? It's such a waste of time!"
The guard outside remained unfazed and continued to smile. "I apologize; it's regulation. Please cooperate, thank you."
Ruan Yu stopped complaining and pulled out her ID, tossing it onto the front seat. Gao Zhijie opened Ruan Yu's ID and handed it to the guard. After comparing the photo on the ID with Ruan Yu herself and confirming everything was correct, the guard smiled as he returned her ID. "Thank you for your cooperation, and I apologize for taking up your time."
With that, the guard hurried back to the Guard Room, and the barrier at the entrance slowly lifted.
Gao Zhijie drove into the campus and joked with Ruan Yu, "You really embarrassed us; look at how much more professional that security guard is compared to you!"
Ruan Yu smiled lightly. "I just wanted to see if the staff at this school were as particular as I imagined!"
"Is it done?"
Ruan Yu nodded. "It's even better than I imagined. It seems this university is indeed extraordinary."
Gao Zhijie followed the directions on the road and drove into a huge parking lot. There weren't many cars, but there were plenty of electric vehicles and bicycles, and not far from the parking lot stood two residential buildings over forty stories tall.
"This must be the staff dormitory, right? It's so luxurious!" Chen Rui remarked, glancing at the two residential towers. They were among the few high-rise buildings in the area, aside from a ten-story office building and another tower over forty stories tall.
"How do you know this is for staff? I think with such luxury, it could be student dorms!" Gao Zhijie parked the car in a space, engaged the handbrake, and looked at Chen Rui.
"First, there aren't any extremely luxurious cars in this parking lot; most are priced between four hundred thousand to six hundred thousand. Second, this school probably has around two hundred to three hundred students, and these two buildings only have eighty units total. Even if two people share a room, it wouldn't accommodate everyone," Chen Rui rationally analyzed why these buildings couldn't be student dorms.
In such elite schools, having one person per room wouldn't seem extravagant, but sharing a room could foster friendship. Therefore, most elite private schools opt for two students per room.
As Chen Rui and the others got out of the car, he looked at the distance to the office building. "Isn't that a bit far? Are we really walking over there?"
"Of course! What do you expect? Are we going to fly?" Gao Zhijie joked but suddenly noticed that the bicycles and electric vehicles nearby were not locked; they were simply parked in their spots.
"Don't look too much; their quality is so good. Are we going to ruin that atmosphere?" Chen Rui said with a wry smile. "Let's just walk over."
Gao Zhijie and Ruan Yu sighed and followed Chen Rui as they began walking toward the seemingly distant office building.
